Gorgeously photographed book that would be welcome on any coffee table.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review
I love this book! The pictures were so beautiful and the explanations/tips for the decor were so helpful. (I learned a lot more about nightstands and Roman shades than I was expecting! I liked that this designer is not afraid of pattern and color. And there was a variety of images that can relate to anyone’s style. Perfect yet useful coffee table book!
This is a gorgeous book! Perfect to have laying on the living room table and browse when the mood strikes. I loved all the beautiful pictures. Very nice book!
I'm not a designer by any means and I'm always looking for practical design advice to make my home more stylish. This book has tons of inspiration but it was the practical tips that really made me love this book.
The book is in three parts. Part one is inspiration for each room in your home. Part two is the style guide and my personal favorite. The style guide has everything you need to know to design a room - fabrics, colors, measurements. All the details a designer would know but most homeowners don't. It has tips on flooring, paint, patterns, rugs, furniture, layouts for every room, etc. A few simple rules presented and the seven design basics made me confident I could make design decisions for each room in my house. Part three is answers to common questions for each room in your home.
Overall, this book is beautiful, inspirational, and perfectly organized for anyone looking to make beautiful spaces in their home.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a wonderful book. The pictures are beautiful and it's full of great tips on how to have a beautiful home!
A beautiful book full of ideas for creating a wonderful living space. The style guide and layout plans at the back are vey useful when planning your new design. I found the photos very inspiring, lots of attention to detail and very decadent. Thank you to Net Galley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
Beautiful photography and amazing colour scheme throughout the interior designs. I love the layout of the book and how different materials are explained to suit each room. There was a lot of attention to detail. I enjoyed reading it :)
I love seeing how other people design their interiors but quickly realised the authors taste is very different to my minimalist approach. I still found some useful advice in the Common Questions section and enjoyed learning the differences between an interior designer and decorator.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC.
Pretty pictures and some fun decorating advice. It wasn't all for me, but the pictures were beautiful and fun to look at! It would be a good addition to any library.
I'm sure this is a lovely book but it did not display well on my phone so hard to read and view pictures. What i could see was such pretty rooms! Seems to be a ton of useful decorating tips.
The highlight for me was the layout and paint suggestions in the end, and how organised this book was.
I am not a fan of all the styles in the sample photos or that are discussed as part of the beautiful living, however I did not expect to love them all. As expected, this book covers a wide range of styles and options for making homes beautiful.
Some photos show really nice interiors, to my taste, others do not. Looming over all of them, though, is that feeling of terror vacui (they're too full, too colorful, too much everything) that makes me think that, if I had the money and the space, that's not how I'd fill it, but I'm not a decorator.
I received from the Publisher a complimentary digital advanced review copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.
Book Review: Beautiful Living: Elevate Every Room with Your Signature Style by Valerie Darden
Valerie Darden’s Beautiful Living: Elevate Every Room with Your Signature Style is a visually stunning and practical guide that demystifies interior design for anyone looking to create an elegant yet personal living space. Whether you’re tackling a full-scale renovation or simply sprucing up a small room, Darden’s accessible style and thoughtful advice make this book an invaluable resource.
A Holistic Approach to Home Design
One of the strengths of Beautiful Living is its structure, which reflects Darden’s holistic approach to home design. The book is divided into several sections, each addressing different stages of home decoration and renovation, with practical advice tailored to specific spaces such as entryways, living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and even kids’ rooms. Darden provides a roadmap that allows homeowners to think systematically about their projects, ensuring that design choices are cohesive and flow throughout the home. This organization is particularly helpful for beginners who might feel overwhelmed by the scope of home design.
What’s remarkable is the balance Darden strikes between aspirational and achievable design. Often, home design books present ideas that feel out of reach for the average person due to cost or complexity. However, Darden, with her expertise as the founder of Brexton Cole Interiors, makes it clear that high-end design doesn’t always require an exorbitant budget. Throughout the book, she emphasizes smart, strategic choices—whether that’s where to splurge (like on long-lasting foundational pieces) and where to save (like choosing affordable yet stylish accessories).
Accessible Design Philosophy
Darden’s signature design style, a blend of modern and traditional elements, is beautifully showcased in the photographs that accompany the text. These images offer readers inspiration while also showing the versatility of her approach. Whether you prefer clean, minimalist lines or a cozy, more classic aesthetic, Darden’s ideas translate well across various styles. The book provides plenty of opportunities for readers to imagine how they might apply her design principles to their own homes.
Beyond aesthetics, Darden encourages readers to prioritize creating spaces that reflect their own lifestyles and personalities. This is where the book truly shines—it’s not about adhering to a rigid set of rules, but rather about discovering what makes you feel at home and then elevating those elements with a designer’s touch. By incorporating this personal dimension, Darden makes interior design feel more inclusive and empowering.
Practical and Detailed Tips
The Style Guide section of the book is particularly valuable for readers who want to dive deeper into the practicalities of home design. In this part, Darden shares in-depth guidance on everything from selecting paint colors to understanding how lighting can transform a room. There are also useful tips for working with patterns, mixing metals, and choosing the right rug size—details that can make or break a design project but are often overlooked by non-professionals.
The inclusion of diagrams and charts is a thoughtful touch that further demystifies more technical aspects of home design. For instance, figuring out the correct height for hanging lighting fixtures or determining how large a rug should be in proportion to a room can be tricky for beginners. Darden breaks these tasks down into digestible, easy-to-follow steps that remove much of the guesswork from the process.
Another standout element is Darden’s advice on how to make smaller spaces feel larger. In an era where many people live in apartments or smaller homes, this practical guidance feels especially timely. By offering solutions like clever furniture placement and optical illusions through color and pattern, she empowers readers to create inviting, functional spaces no matter the square footage.
Budget-Conscious Approach
A highlight of Beautiful Living is its focus on maintaining a budget without sacrificing style. Darden excels at offering advice on where to invest your money for maximum impact—like a high-quality couch or timeless kitchen countertops—and where to cut back without compromising the overall look and feel of the room. This practical perspective is refreshing in a design world that often skews toward luxury and excess.
Her tips on how to navigate the cost of renovations are particularly helpful for anyone who has ever felt intimidated by the financial side of home design. By breaking down costs, Darden allows readers to make informed decisions, ensuring that they can achieve the results they desire without unexpected financial strain. The inclusion of Valerie’s favorite shops for affordable yet stylish home essentials is a nice touch that makes the design process even more approachable for everyday readers.
Common Questions and Real-Life Advice
In the final section, Common Questions, Darden provides answers to some of the most frequent questions she receives from clients and social media followers. This Q&A format feels refreshingly casual and personal, offering readers a direct line to Darden’s design philosophy and problem-solving skills. From tackling specific challenges, like how to mix and match different styles in one room, to more general inquiries about her design process, these responses offer valuable insights that will resonate with readers at all stages of their design journey.
This section also highlights Darden’s ability to connect with her audience in a friendly and approachable manner. Rather than overwhelming readers with technical jargon or imposing strict design rules, she offers encouragement and real-life advice, which makes her expertise feel both accessible and actionable.
Visual Appeal
The book’s visual component cannot be understated. Beautiful Living is filled with gorgeous, high-quality photographs that show off Darden’s work both in her clients’ homes and in her own space. These images are not only inspirational but also serve as a guide for readers to see how different design principles play out in real-world settings. The photography feels intimate and inviting, further reinforcing Darden’s message that home design should be personal and reflective of the people who live in the space.
Conclusion
Valerie Darden’s Beautiful Living is more than just a coffee-table book filled with pretty pictures. It’s a comprehensive, practical guide that empowers readers to bring their own signature style into every corner of their home without breaking the bank. By blending design theory with actionable tips, Darden has created a resource that will resonate with a wide audience—from design novices to seasoned home decorators.
Her modern-meets-traditional style, combined with her down-to-earth advice on budgeting and space management, makes this book a must-have for anyone looking to create a warm, stylish, and personalized living space. Whether you’re dreaming of an Instagram-worthy home or just looking to update a room or two, Beautiful Living will inspire and guide you through every step of the process.
