A Storytelling of Ravens hooked me in certain places and lost me in others. This gothic novel is about a journalist who embarks on a journey to uncover the truth of deaths that are happening. He meets with interesting characters along the way and ultimately finds a conclusion to the Ravens that plague the city. Personally I found this novel a difficult read as I didn’t quite understand the plot and found it to be very ‘wordy’ without much happening for majority of the book. It certainly comes across as a gothic, mystery novel, however it wasn’t for me I’m afraid.
I did not enjoy this book. I like the concept, but I don't feel it was executed well. The prologue almost stopped me from reading the book. The first paragraph felt like a huge run-on sentence. The writing feels very wordy like someone was trying to make a short story stretch into a novel. The first chapter was 10% of the book! It's not conducive to hooking a reader. I felt like the dialogue wasn't cohesive. Some of the characters spoke like they were of the time while others felt more modern and towards the end it all sounded very modern.
This is of course just my opinion, take it with a grain of salt. I will not be posting my opinions publicly because I feel it is unfair to post bad reviews for ARCs.
I really like this it wasn't your typical horror type novel. It was great read and kept you uncomfortable ( in a good way) until the end.
This uses the historical time-period perfectly and enjoyed how everything worked with the concept from the description. The characters were everything that I wanted and enjoyed how everything worked with them. R R Penfold was able to create a strong story and had that character development that I wanted.
This was a fast paced, interesting mystery with a lot of elements of the supernatural. I thought the ravens were great! I couldn't really find much connection with any of the characters so I wasn't as invested as I would've liked to have been.
