Immediately the story line pulls you in and keeps you wanting more from the very beginning. The three points of view from each mother leaves so much mystery the entire time. I was shocked at the end of the book and enjoyed how it wasn’t predictable. Isla turns out to be nothing like her mom believes she is. After being killed in a hit and run, you are left to hear three different stories of what happened that night and how they come together. I did feel like I wanted to know more about Islas father to understand he character more and I felt like Jenna’s story went on a tad to long. But I loved the overall plot and suspense from the characters.
I really enjoyed this book. My first by Hannah Beckerman but certainly not my last. The book deals with the response of three women to a harrowing event and the length that they go to to protect their children. The author certainly understands motherhood and the sometimes irrational need to protect our children at any cost. The characters were wonderfully written. Even the likeable ones had their not so nice traits....as indeed have we all. We were certainly kept guessing as to who the guilty party was and even then 'guilt' wasn't clear cut. A very clever, compelling read that I'm happy to recommend. I look forward to reading the author's other books.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy. All opinions are my own.
Hannah Beckerman's "Three Mothers" is a captivating masterpiece that deserves nothing less than five stars.
The story is told from three mother's perspectives and involves their children, husbands and friendships. Abby and Nicole have been friends ever since their children were small, Jenna is the outsider, her son Callum having been awarded a bursary at Collingswood, the school Isla and Nathanial already attend, The children's relationships are played out on the pages, but all is not always as it might appear.
This book is a thought-provoking journey that challenges readers to look at life differently. It deftly touches on deep and significant issues such as prejudices, grief, and the complexities of human emotions. The characters are beautifully developed, and their stories are both poignant and relatable.
The plotting was absolutely brilliant, with the gradual unveiling of secrets that led to the heart-wrenching tragedy. The author masterfully handles the three women's viewpoints, weaving them together to create a rich, multifaceted narrative that keeps you engaged from start to finish.
"Three Mothers" is not just a book; it's an experience that stays with you long after you've turned the last page. It is a must-read for anyone who appreciates powerful storytelling and the exploration of the human condition. Highly recommended!
This was an emotional and sometimes horrifying read with a mystery attached - who killed 17yo Isla in a hit and run accident. Told from the viewpoints of three mothers - Isla’s mum Abby, her best friend Nicole who was like an aunt to Isla and working class Jenna who is the mother of Isla’s ex boyfriend Callum and who feels very looked down on by the other more affluent mothers. Told in present day where Abby is desperate to uncover the truth about who killed her daughter but in the process of digging into whatever information she can finds herself unsettled by revelations relating to Isla’s last few months; Nicole is trying to support Abby whilst her marriage is disintegrating and Jenna is desperate to hide Callum’s past for fear it may imply he was involved in Isla’s death. This is a very powerful story and I found it interesting how my perspective of the mothers changed as it progressed, I did anticipate who had killed Isla and it became increasingly clear why. The chapters told during Isla’s last few months made for increasingly uncomfortable reading but were pivotal to the book and you couldn’t help but feel for her. Although this has some difficult themes it’s very well told and I found it easy to engage with the story which I thought played out very well.
A great exploration of motherhood and the roles moms play in our lives. Excellent writing and storytelling. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
An excellent read! Perfect thriller about families, the secrets they keep and the length people will go to keep those secrets. Suspenseful, couldn’t put it down and can’t wait to read more books by Hannah Beckerman!
When seventeen-year-old Isla Richardson is killed in a hit-and-run incident, a community’s lives are thrown into disarray. For Isla’s mum, Abby, it is her second devastating bereavement, having lost her husband five years ago. As Abby begins to uncover secrets about Isla’s life, she’s forced to rethink everything she thought she knew about her family.
I enjoyed reading this book to a certain degree. It made me feel sad. The adults in the book weren’t very good people and the ending wasn’t that surprising.
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and share this book.
Told from the perspective of three mothers, all of whom have been friends. The 17 year old daughter of one of the women is killed in a hit and run.
When Abby, Isla's mum, starts trying to find the answers, she realizes she doesn't know anyone the way she thought she did.
The mums all have something to hide, or lose, and I think you'll be surprised when all the knots unravel.

I have enjoyed all of Hannah Beckerman’s other books, however this is by far the best book yet. I loved it! The characters, writing style and plot are all super engaging. A great read and more than worthy of 5 stars!
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. A well written domestic suspense that kept me turning the pages to find out what was happening and had me fully engaged with the characters.
I’ve read a few of Hannah’s books now and this one was another brilliant read.
When Isla died, suddenly and tragically, her mother Abby is obviously distraught. A single mum of two after the loss of her husband, she can’t believe that fate has struck their family twice. But just who is responsible for the bit and run that kills her daughter? And why?
I was so invested in this book - I wanted to know what secrets Isla had taken with her to her grave, as well as seeing justice being survey.
Will be highly recommending.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read and review.
4* Wasn't expecting this. It's sad and it made me sad as well as angry at some of the adults in this book.
This book hits hard, and it feels like the mother who's lost her daughter is being dumped on by karma/fate/the universe. You can't help feel for her, because on top of this loss, she was widowed really young, and her youngest is a brat. Kind of understable where the latter is concerned, because Clio has always felt like she's less than her big sister, Isla, who wasn't as squeaky clean as everyone thought.
There's another mother you feel for, and again, I understood her, with what she came from and why she wanted better for her son. Unfortunately, out of wanting to protect him and give him the best chance at a better life, she nearly scuppered his chances through dishonesty. Thank goodness for an educator who actually really did care, despite appearing at first to be more concerned about the school's rep.
Then there's the mother who had me feeling sorry for her and then had my mouth falling open in disbelief. Of course, I'm not in her shoes and I don't know what I'd have done in her situation, but to maintain a facade and live with so many lies...How could she live with herself without cracking, because it was coming at her from every which way, I don't know.
The ending felt like justice was being served for the most. Some of it healed some of the characters and some of it felt like more needed to be done to/for the guilty. For the thwarted. Some felt like they'd not paid enough. It wasn't a perfect ending but it was ultimately a satisfying read.

Three mothers who are united and seperated by the death of isla..
I loved this book.. in fact I have read another by this author and I enjoyed that one too. She has a knack for writing emotive, realistic reads that I can identify with.
I loved the characters and getting to know them was both sad and divine. I enjoyed how the story unfolded and the coming together at the end was a true delight
Bravo!
Wow! 3 mothers draws you in from page one and keeps you engrossed all the way through! So many twists and turns and the lengths a mum will go to protect her child.
I did guess early on who was the one who actually caused the tragedy, although the main culprit was someone else who's behaviour caused the catalogue of events leading to it.
This was an incredibly well written, raw, and thrilling read that was also heart breaking in parts. The multiple POVs kept the story interesting and I didn't see some of the twists coming.
3.5 ⭐
This was everything I expected it to be
Multiple points of view, each revealing part of the story as it goes on.
Plenty of characters to throw suspicion on.
The mothers all doing what they consider is best for their kids.
Enjoyable, good pacing and a great escape for a few hours
I really enjoyed reading this novel, it had that element that I wanted and enjoyed the overall story being told. The characters had that feel that I was looking for and enjoyed how realistic it was. Hannah Beckerman wrote this perfectly and enjoyed the twists of this book.
I couldn’t put this book down and read it in just over 24 hours so that should tell you all you need to know! The story is told from different perspectives and different points of time and it makes for a gripping read. My first Hannah Beckerman book but you bet I’ll be running to read more.
Great book. Interesting characters. The plot held my attention from start to finish. I would read another book by this author.
First time I’ve read anything by this author and would definitely try another. A great read from page one to the end. Very absorbing and quick moving read with short chapters. Loved the way the story was woven and excellent portrayal of the characters which held my interest throughout. Highly recommend.
