I got this as an arc on Netgalley and it will come out in January. I got this because of a current situation playing out in my and other for me important people' personal life in the hope to get some tools for this. I will definitely get this when it comes out cause it was truly beneficial.
A practical book about the important and overlooked theme of helping yourself when you are helping others or taking care of your mental health when a loved one is suffering from mental health issues.
Some fresh insights along with practical tips and some common sense reminders.
This book caught my eye because of the title and the subject matter. "You Are Not Alone In This: Supporting a Loved One’s Mental Health Without Losing Your Own", by Sophie Scott, offers practical advice and suggestions. Scott encourages her readers who believe a loved one may have a mental health issue to help them be diagnosed by a medical doctor. She asserts that a diagnosis can help "facilitate treatment, improve access to support, provide validation, and enhance self-awareness." However, this first step is also the easiest, hard as it may be. Once a loved one has been diagnosed, there are a variety of emotions that become involved. Scott suggests the following exercise: "in your journal, create three columns: everything you "know", everything you "feel" about your loved one's mental health and everything you "want to understand more about."
Scott also asserts that you shouldn't give up caring for yourself just because you're caring for a loved one. If you don't take care of yourself, the stress and burnout will negatively impact the relationship that you're already struggling to hold together. I found many of Scott's suggestions in this book to be helpful, and I believe others will as well. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
