Will & the Wardrobe of Wonders had a great premise, but failed to keep the attention of this avid reader. I found the wandering of Will's mind to be very distracting to the story line, so much so that I had to keep looking back to see what was actually happening. I read over half of the book before finally just giving up. I can only imagine how much sooner a middle grade reader would put this down.
It soon became very clear that this author did not use an editor or a human proofreader. The book could possibly be good with a lot of editing and revision to remove excess verbiage.
There were also far too many references to other books, scientific concepts and history that detracted from the progress of the story. I would compare it to traffic stopping randomly while the driver in the lead vehicle stares at grass growing while thinking about the mechanism of chlorophyll in the blades of the grass, then suddenly pressing the gas pedal for a few yards only to stop again for some other random musing.
This was a interesting read, it worked with that storyline and enjoyed the characters that I was getting to know them. Mark Roland Langdale has a strong writing style and can’t wait for more.
Review: I don't know what I was expecting but it certainly wasn't this story line. The cover art is forgettable as well.
This was over-done? Redundant? Obtuse? Every page is this strange over-exertion to purvey whimsey. It's not about a dude that enters a wardrobe and goes places (although it is). It is more of a transcription of running thoughts that mire in odd self-reflective events. Added on top of these inner-ruminations is this weird commentary of "Wonderous this! Wonderful that! Wonder boy!" etc. etc. Seriously, every page has this strange exclamatory reveal coupled with confused progression.
This novel just never gets off the pot, and when it does, you are back in this strange myopic inner-dialogue. If this is written for younger kids or YA dipshjts (noodle heads) then good luck selling them on this farce.
I received this ARC for an honest review.
