Jenny Uglow’s *In These Times* offers a vivid portrait of Britain during the years of the French Revolution, showing how political upheaval abroad reverberated at home. Uglow has a gift for weaving together the lives of ordinary people with the broader sweep of history, creating a rich and textured narrative.
At over 700 pages, it can feel dense, but her prose and eye for detail keep it moving. The result is an engaging, panoramic history that brings the period alive without losing sight of the human stories at its core.
A rewarding read for anyone interested in Britain’s social and political fabric during one of Europe’s most turbulent eras.

This simply isn't my kind of book. The focus is incredibly wide: men, women, people of all classes and walks of life, as long as they were alive during the Napoleonic wars this book will talk about them. And that makes it somewhat jumbled, jumping back and forth between so many different people with different views and problems. For others, this book might give a great overview but I simply prefer a narrower focus.
