What do you get when you mix Harry Potter (the latter, more darker storylines), Zodiac Academy, Dragons and Vampires? On Wings of Blood.
This was one of the easiest 5 stars I've ever given. I gave it 5 stars at 40% - that's how good this was for me.

Medra Pendragon wakes up in a foreign world, naked, surrounded by dead bodies and before she even has a chance to catch her breath, there is someone sniffing at her neck, desperate to drink her. The blood hungry male is swiftly told to leave her alone but before she can even thank this mysterious, handsome, silver-haired male, he swiftly binds her and frogmarches her back to his castle to be sneered at, sniffed at, and openly chided by his family, a family of Vampires. Lucky for them, and unlucky for her, she has the telltale mark of a Dragon Rider, fiery red hair. The dragons are long since gone from Sangratha, but unable to let her go, they betroth her to her captor, much to the chagrin of him and his consort Regan, and send her to Bloodwing, the school for highborn vampires, and their prey, the Blightborns. Looking for a way back home, Medra has to start again, with no magic or powers, and no and learn to survive not only the school and her predators, but her dangerous feelings for Blake Drakharrow, her betrothed and the calling of the Dragons that are no longer in existence.

If that isn't enough to make you read this incredible book, I don't know what is. Medra is a perfect FMC, stubborn, prideful and determined. You feel her pain, her misery, her despair but you also revel in her joy, her determination, her sass and her victories. Blake Drakharrow is so, so wrong, on so many levels that he is just so right. This silver haired vampire cannot control himself, his jealousy, his disdain or his lust for Medra.

"I could kill you right here, right now, little dragon"

The story is incredibly fast paced for a long book that keeps you hooked from start to finish, 700+ pages flew by in an instant thanks to Briar Boleyn's incredibly captivating descriptions and ability for each sentence to keep holding on in a sort of reverie. The world is fleshed out quickly, but so descriptively that you can feel the chill in the air of the long corridors of the school. Medra's relationship with her only few friends is so heartwarming that I wish to attend so I can sit in the common room with Florence and Naveen helping plot Regan Panserra's demise.

Absolutely get this on your TBR, immediately. Deliciously decadent, bloodlustingly fierce, quick-paced atmospheric academia read that will have you praying to the Bloodmaiden to sacrifice yourself immediately.

This was so good and I must immediately read the backlog of Briar Boleyn’s work immediately. I did feel like I missed some lore by not reading her Blood of a Fae series first but not enough to affect my reading of this book first if it feels more like your cup of tea. It was really good and has everything you could want, enemies to lovers, tension, and a unique world that brings a whole new life to the word vampire.

Medra Pendragon is really having an unideal day. Waking up in a different world, naked on a pile of corpses and then having a Vampire Prince drag you before his uncle just to get put into a deadly academy, and betrothed to that same prince and his other consort who hates your guts is my idea of a bad time. Medra must learn how to survive in this new world and prove her usefulness, meanwhile the chief reason they kept her alive was for her dragon riding characteristics but no one has seen a dragon in for hundreds of years. Oh and not fall in love with her bully betrothed.

I absolutely demolished this book so quickly it wasn’t even funny. So easy to read and I could feel the stakes and tension. Blake is honestly so hot, and I kept wanting Medra to get closer and closer to him. The book ended on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to see what happens in book 2!

On Wings of Blood is an amazing addition to the fantasy genre, especially for readers who enjoy complex political intrigue, use of dark magic and themes, and character driven plots. This story was engaging and immersive, with characters that many readers will relate to. This novel explores themes of survival, betrayal, and identity. Medra, the FMC, and her friends are seen as outsiders and less then because they were not born as "highbloods", but as mortals whose only purpose is to serve the "high bloods". Blake, the MMC, struggles with his own instincts as a "high blood" once Medra is bound to him and has to figure out a way to protect her and himself. Readers who enjoy complex world building will appreciate the depth that is brought to the setting. The world itself is developed, with details about its history, cultures, and beliefs. If you enjoy high dark fantasy novels with intricate world - building On Wings of Blood is definitely worth the read!

This was a brilliant book over all and I’m really looking forward to the second one. I’m generally not much into bulky romances but every now and then if the description is captivating enough I’ll give it a try and this book definitely delivered. However, I do wish there’d been more emotional intimacy and dialogue between Medra and Blake, it feels as if there’s so much reading between the lines with them that it’s hard to capture that there could be anything more than what blood gives them. But book two may surprises me!

The relationship between Medra and Blake Drakharrow, the cold and arrogant highblood vampire, is at the heart of the story. Their dynamic is charged with tension and complexity; Blake is as infuriating as he is captivating, and the betrothal ritual that binds them adds layers to their interactions. Boleyn navigates this relationship with finesse, allowing it to evolve amidst the intense backdrop of high-stakes competitions and political machinations.
Boleyn has crafted a universe teeming with magic, hierarchies, and dark secrets. The lore surrounding the dragon riders and the various factions within the academy adds richness to the story, making readers hunger for more information about the history and rules that govern this place. Oh my gooooossssshhhhh!!! I could not put this book down. THE ANGST. The draw between the two main characters? I loved it.

Who doesn’t love a strong FMC and a stubborn MMC? Medra and Blake are great characters that I cannot wait to follow. I love their fight and grit. I love how they challenge each other. I’m really looking forward to the next book in hopes that some of this slow burn turns into a real scorcher. Based on some of Ms. Boleyn’s previous works, I’m holding onto that hope. We did get a “good girl,” and a pretty spicy scene in a temple no less 🥵

Ugh, and the cliffhanger!! So. Worth. It. I can’t wait to see Medra and Blake burn it all down.

And when it comes to spin off series, you never know what to expect. @briar did such an amazing job with this new book! Because of this new world we’ve jumped into it was impossible to put the book down. Wanting all of the answers to my questions, I binged through it!

This is now in my top 10 fantasy books of 2024! I cannot wait for more in this series, it reminded me of Zodiac Academy I loved the sizzling chemistry and palpable tension between the characters, loved the setting too, dark academia moody vibes, this has all the tropes I love, enemies to lovers, slow burn, villain gets the girl, all the banter! I'm honestly really impatient for the next book anyone who loves romantasy needs to read this! I'm obsessed

I'm a HUGE fan of the enemies to lovers trope, and it definitely nails it here... although, at the end of this book I wouldn't call them lovers. While I don't doubt that it will indeed happen, it's clear Medra and Blake have a long way to go. (while the cnc was hot, it certainly doesn't make them lovers just yet)
The burn in this is SLOOOOOOOW! At times, I was like... wtf I need more than this!! But also, I like the build up. Also, digging Kane's presence in the mix. I don't know what he's up to, but it feels significant, and I'm HERE FOR IT.
There was a minor inconsistency I thought... Blake had said Pansera was expelled, but she was actually still in school... so... we'll assume she's in the second book? I have a secret hope that she and Medra will become friends.
Oh, and lets not forget the cliffhanger... rude. ha!! But also YESSSSS!!!!! I don't want to give it away, but it doubles my excitement for the next book.

This book follows Medra Pendragon, who has fallen into the world of Sangratha with no idea how she got there. She is apprehended by vampires who discover that she has dragon rider's blood, even though there are no more dragons, and she is made the consort of Blake Drakharrow, our prodigal bad boy. As part of this bond, she is forced to attend Bloodwing Academy, where she has to learn to protect herself around vampires, deal with the bullying of catty girls, figure out who she is, and, of course, fight off her attraction to the vampire she is stuck with.

This book shamelessly copies Harry Potter (the fact that the mortals are called blightbloods sent me), and honestly, I loved it. It felt instantly familiar to me, while also having new and exciting twists and features. The spice is truly incredible (there is one scene in particular that is the stuff of fantasies, you can thank me later), and Medra is fun to root for. This book moved very fast, the minor characters were interesting, the school felt very well thought-out in terms of classes and content, and the power dynamics were constantly changing. I don't do well with romances with the bullying trope, and I was a little nervous about this book given it's been marketed as like The Zodiac Academy series--which I was put off of reading by reviews describing the main relationship dynamics as emotionally abusive and incredibly toxic. But thankfully, Blake and Medra's relationship doesn't really have bullying; Medra is bullied by other people, and Blake is cold to her at first and sometimes rude, but he shows shades of being a good person early on, and Medra gives as good as she gets. The gradual warming between them feels natural and earned, and I was satisfied by the way things left off at the end of the book.

Some of the worldbuilding is confusing and feels a bit unnecessary; a world with vampires and dragons already feels a little contradictory, and adding in the Camelot and Fae stuff really had my head spinning (thankfully that wasn't a huge part of the book). But luckily, most of the plot is contained at Bloodwing Academy, and the world makes a lot of sense, especially given the endless similarities to Harry Potter (again, not complaining).

All in all, I loved this and will be eagerly awaiting the next installment!

I hate when books are compared to other books, I get let down almost every time! Not here, this really did remind me very much of Zodiac Academy. The dark academia vibe, the push/ pull of the main characters, the TENSION! I couldn't put it down. There were a couple of things that irked me though. This is the first book of the series, yet when I started it, I was so confused. It was like I was starting a book in the middle of a series and was missing information that I needed. Turns out there is a different series the author wrote that I guess is interconnected, I would HIGHLY suggest reading that before this series. Through the whole book it felt like I was missing information on our MFC.

Why are bully romances so addictive to me?! Thats another reason it reminds me of Zodiac Academy, was it my favorite? No. Do I need a second book immediately? YES! I have to know what's going to happen next between Blake and Medra but also...... hope that Kage comes back. *Eye emoji*

I couldn't put it down, and when I had to, my thoughts were still consumed with Medra, Blake, and all the twists and turns they’re caught in. It’s a dark, delicious world of dragons, vampires, and blood-bound secrets, and I am hooked.

Dual POV Perfection: Seeing both Medra and Blake’s perspectives is everything. You get to dig into the layers of each character, all the secrets they hide, and wonder—is it all to protect each other, or will it ultimately tear them apart? 👀

Medra’s Fierce Spirit: I absolutely love Medra. She’s sassy, stands her ground, and doesn’t hesitate to call out anyone’s nonsense. Thrown into a forced betrothal with a mysterious vampire who’s hiding his own dark secrets, she’s now surrounded by high-blooded vampires who either want her gone or want to use her. And Medra? She’s not going down without a fight. Her fire and resilience make her unforgettable, she’s kind and loyal but she will cut you down if you mess with her or her loved ones as Reagan should realise.

Blake is the Alpha-hole of My Dreams: He’s protective of Medra in ways she doesn’t even realise, and that just makes me swoon. There’s so much to him—the loyalty, the protective instinct, and yeah, a soft side. I like that he’s not always so self assured and knows what the right thing is to say, he’s biting and has rough edges, he doesn’t play nicely, he plays dirty and I’m all here for it. Plus, the chemistry between them? Scorching and I know as this slow burn unfolds things are going to get hotter than dragons breathe!
Also let’s talk about his creepy sister? This part of the story line is wild and adds another complex layer and has me really questioning where his mum is, cause I don’t feel like we’ve the whole truth there…

Unbelievable World-Building: The vampire reign, the Bloodwing academy, and Medra’s unique position create a world that’s as dark as it is addictive. Briar’s intricate world-building just pulls you in, making each new twist hit even harder. I’m obsessed with the dragons, the eerie earthquakes, and the hints that there’s more to Medra’s family than meets the eye. Also am I’ve theories about the bloodmaiden and I need to discuss them asap! So getting reading so I can talk to y’all about what I suspect 🤭

Spicy, Heart-Wrenching, and Real: Briar doesn’t shy away from the tough stuff—her handling of prejudice and acceptance in the LGBT community is honest and raw, adding an extra layer of realism to this fantasy. And the spice? Let’s just say the Rite scene brought the heat, it was heady and delicious but what followed made my heart break.

Jaw-Dropping Ending: That final courtyard scene?! Between the intensity with Blake and Medra, and the earth-shattering twist, I was left gasping. Viktor is sure to make Medra’s life even harder, and with the stakes set this high, I’m dying to know what happens next!

Briar has crafted flawed, complex, and deeply relatable characters that you can’t help but root for—even when they make you want to scream. Medra’s journey is epic, her struggles are real, and her potential is mind-blowing (dragon potential, anyone?). Plus, Blake's uncle Viktor? He’s a ruthless, compelling villain I hate already and he hasn’t even made his big moves I can feel are coming, I just know he’ll be at the heart of so much chaos.

If you haven’t started with the Blood of Fae series, do yourself a favor and dive in! Briar’s world is unparalleled, her characters unforgettable, and if you’re into enemies to lovers, forced betrothals, and dark academia vibes, this book is a must-read. as always though makes sure you check the TWs some others in this include:

It took me a little while to get into the story but after a few chapters I was hooked. This book is well written and not overly fluffy. Loved the storyline with Regan, they had a really interesting dynamic. Can’t wait to read the second book!

This was my first Briar Boleyn book, and it won't be my last. On Wings of Blood, started out very well. I was pretty hooked from about chapter 3 on. Medra (the FMC) was very mysterious, and man was she a fighter. She didn't just accept fate, and she questioned everything which I loved. However, she had so much going on, and a lot of plots started with her, and I didn't get the answers by the end of this book. Blake was a good MMC, he kind of reminded me of a cross between Cardan from Cruel Prince and Edward from Twilight. The boy had good intentions, but man, he went about 90% of everything the wrong way. Hopefully, he pulls it together in book two.




I really liked the story, but towards the end, there were so many things going on, it was hard to keep straight. Consort trials, vampires, dragons are all dead, Medras mother being in her head, now her mother's in a dagger, blood thirsty sister, injured cute little fluffy critters, jealous girls being nice, jealous girls turning murderess, mass mind control, vampires doing terrible things, jealous house leaders, dragons are alive again etc. All very good plots, but I just wish they didn't all happen back to back. For a 1st in a series, I want a little more background and then for things to pick up in the next book and so forth.

If you loved Fourth Wing, Harry Potter, Zodiac Academy, Cruel Prince, and Twilight, I think you would really love this. It's got it all, and I am excited to get answers to all my questions

What do you get when you combine Fourth Wing, House of the Dragon, Hogwarts, and Vampires? This book!!! (I’ve also heard it has Zodiac Academy Vibes, but I haven’t read ZA so I can’t speak to that 🤷‍♀️)

This was a such a fun read! I had a hard time putting it down! It’s a dark romantasy full of vampires, magic, court politics, twisted trials, dragons, and found family, set at a dangerous magical academy. The world-building was so interesting and felt original. It was really thorough and well-done! Medra was a great FMC who had an excellent balance of strength and kindness, though she was also stubborn and not afraid to speak her mind…even if that gets her into trouble at times. Blake was a great MMC. He’s morally gray, possessive, angsty, and secretly kind of a softie and a bit obsessed with Medra. He can be a bit of a bully at times (though, this felt pretty mild), but also had major touch-her-and-☠️ energy. This was definitely a true slow-burn romance that was full of snarky banter and delicious tension. It’s definitely Dramione coded. 😍

I can’t wait for the next book to see how things go for them following the events at the end of this book! I’m definitely interested in learning more about the dragons and seeing how it will affect the politics in this world. I think this book did a great job laying the foundation for what is sure to be a really captivating series and I’m excited to see where it goes from here!

It is a spinoff of Briar’s Blood of a Fae series which I really enjoyed. I will say that this one can be read without having read her other series, but reading the other series first will give you more context into the FMC’s backstory. For those who have read the Blood of a Fae series, this one definitely has a bit of a different vibe and writing style, but I really enjoyed both!

In the spirit of complete transparency I requested this as an ARC for the Dramione vibes (won't be hearing any judgment on this) but I'm now obsessed with the fantasy world and I'd love this even without the romance
My biggest criticism with romantasy is usually that the world building is lacking- absolutely not the case for this book. I was minorly confused in the first chapter or two but everything clicked pretty quickly. The vampire politics was intriguing, the way Bloodwing Academy was run made sense, and the side characters held their own.

Normally a bully romance would send me running but this was a very believable progression and the slow burn was slow burning. Both of the MCs were likeable and I loved the dual POV.

I believe the FMC is a character from another series by the same author but I don't feel like I missed out by not having read those first (although I am going to go and read them now) and I can't wait to read book 2 next year!

Loved this! The world building, the characters, the bully romance. This was right up my alley. Although I feel like I should have read Medra’s story before she got to this point, I don’t think it was absolutely necessary to have read Boleyn’s previous works!

The worldbuilding in this novel was so well done. It was incredibly well thought out--there was so much detail that went into creating the world itself, the lore, the history, and the social issues. I grew to really like the characters in this book, specifically Medra and Blake, and the relationships/dynamics between them all was very good. This was the first enemies to lovers book I've read in a while that had a compelling dynamic and wasn't instant love/infatuation, which I really liked.

I did feel a bit taken aback at the beginning of the story, as it seemed there was something I was missing regarding the world that Medra Pendragon came from. However, upon doing some digging, I found out that this was a spinoff series. Even though there was a bit of disconnect since I didn't read the Queen of Roses series, it didn't stop me from understanding this specific story.

Additionally, I felt that Blake's action at the end was very much out of character for all we had learned about him throughout the book. I think the way he (and therefore the author) went about it was in the wrong way--I won't give any specific details in order to avoid spoilers.

Overall, this was a fun read, and I look forward to reading the next one.

I really enjoyed the book, even though I was kind of afraid going into it after reading mixed reviews stating that it was just a copy of Divergent, Hunger Games, Fourth Wing etc.
I think some of it was inspired by other fantasy books prior to it but the world building was all its own and I kind of loved it. Also Blake and Medra kept me hooked since I couldn’t wait for their relationship to develop into something more. The plot twist at the end made me want to read the sequel like right now 🥺

I’m a big fan of Briar Boleyn, so I had super high hopes for this after the ‘Queen of Roses’ series & my god did they deliver…

This was a mix between all my favourite things- Harry Potter, the past that included Briars previous series that I mentioned, Fourth wing & a little bit of Acotar🫣 there may be more similarities to other books or shows but they were my main!

I could not put this down; it was incredible & im not sure how to feel about Blake? Like there’s times your for him but is it going to be a Tamlin & Feyre situation as I don’t know how I feel about Kaga🙄

Anyway I can not wait for the next one 🥲 HIGHLY RECOMMEND💗
