I picked this story because I live in Louisiana and love to find cute stories that include shrimp or crabs.
This was not our favorite story. It felt like the story was meant for a more mature audience than children.
I would not get this anywhere near a child or adult who may "well actually" the plot.
In full disclosure, I am that adult, and I work with many of those children. An octopus would not be trapped in that cage, as octopodes are capable of squeezing through tiny holes and able to solve puzzles. Be prepared for the story to halt as this is debated and established.
There is a cute message in this story about the tiny creature saving the day. However, it is past the point of plausible deniablity and the octopus would eat most of his "friends".
Thank you to Atmosphere Press and Net Galley for the DRC. All opinions are (clearly) my own.
A decent, quick read, for decent quick youngsters, with an octopus going missing from the underwater neighbourhood and all his friends with their alliterative names going hunting for him. But when they find him, they're still no better off… The moral is obvious when you find out the situation and what is needed to get the critters out of it. Talent-wise, we have pretty decent visuals, that certainly make a strong character of relevant aquatic animals, and as regards the text – well, it's not bad, but it does drift into using a lot of internal rhymes – it clearly wants to be a narrative verse but can't quite achieve it, and it's almost annoying when you see how often it tries. I wouldn't rush to buy it, but nobody could object to seeing this on a library shelf or special offer – three and a half stars.
Such a sweet book! I think even little ones who can't read by themselves yet would enjoy this! It send a wonderful message that no matter how small you are, you can do big things.
Thank you to net gallery and the publisher for this arc copy. This was such a quick read but my children absolutely loved this book and I will definitely be buying a copy of the book. The illustrations in this book were so so beautiful and the meaning behind the story was such a great meaning about how friends can work together and can help people out. I just wish this book was a bit longer so we could have more time with the characters in this wonderful book. The author did a lovely job on this book. Xxx
Thank you Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. These opinions are completely my own.
Not my favorite children's book, although the message was good., the story itself doesn't flow properly, I read through it twice and I can't put my finger on it. It just seems off.
I loved the message of teamwork but most of this book fell flat for me. I think it could've gone through another round or two of editing. Some of the sentences are pretty clunky. It's also a pet peeve of mine when a book switches randomly between rhyming and not. An odd choice! I think this same story should've been spread out by 10 more pages AT LEAST. Too many words per page for a younger reader.
I loved reading this book to my son! In this book, an octopus goes missing and his friends work hard to find and save him from the predicament he is in. The story is unique and the illustrations are bright and fun. My son was engaged through the whole story. I would absolutely recommend this book!
The character name alliteration was adorable! My daughter and I loved "Larry the Lobster" and "Farah the Flounder!" The ocean illustrations were also gorgeous. This was a cute story of teamwork, and triumph for the smallest character prevailing. It did seem a little quick, a lot was packed into 13 pages, but it was very cute.
This is just the sweetest story about ocean animals coming to the rescue of their friend that was trapped. And even though they all had special abilities it would take a certain one to be able to free their friend and it was Sherri who was able to free them. I think this story is meant to teach that size doesn't matter and that we all have something to contribute. The illustrations are fun, and I love that the story contained larger words in it that will help the child that is reading expand their vocabulary.
This book has the loveliest, bright and colorful illustrations of undersea life, featuring color reefs, octopus and tropical fish. A re-telling of Aesop's The Lion amd the Mouse, this book has a classic message. Kudos to the illustrationsmost of all - they are eye candy.
I think that there was a really good idea here, but it very much fell short for me. However, there was only one thing that I really disliked about this book. What made it such a big deal to me was that it was a persistent issue throughout the entire book. This problem was the writing. The rhyming was spotty, and didn't make sense where it was used. With a children's book, you either rhyme consistently or don't rhyme at all. Both work, but it definitely takes a lot away from the story when you are somewhere between the two. Another thing I didn't like about the writing was the word choices. I think that a lot of the words/expressions/phrases that are used in this book will confuse young readers and detract from the story with a crucial message. This message was that teamwork is important, and everyone has their own unique strengths. I really wish I could have focused mostly on that premise without being confused by the way it was delivered. Lastly, the illustrations were soft yet still accurately captured the beauty of the ocean, and the plot was well-organized and cohesive.
I was given a free copy of this from NetGalley for my honest review.
This is such a cute little book. The illustrations were also a beautiful sight. The colors and how vibrant it was was just amazing. I loved the little story. They were trying to find their lost friend and they all took turns trying to help their friend out of this cage and they just could not do it. There is teamwork involved just finding this friend who they can't find. But one little hero comes to their rescue. Proving that size and strength doesn't always matter. Their smallest friend Sherri the Shrimp helped with the rescue.
Oh no! Octavius the Octopus is in a trap and none of her friends can help. They try, one after another, but they can't break her cage. Finally, Sherri the Shrimp comes to the rescue! Sherri is the smallest, but she knows how to take advantage of her small size. This was adorable and fun; what a sweet story of friendship. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this.
A story that goes to show that sometimes the smallest creature has the biggest advantage! Being a shrimp doesn't mean you cannot save the day! The book is written by a dardiologist, with a good heart, and this book will elevate your spirit and keep your heart healthy, due to having a good and optimistic attitude. A fine children's tale.
Sherri the Shrimp Saves the Day follows a group of friends trying to rescue their friend. It shows how teamwork and the talents of all are important, even if you happen to the the smallest. The illustrations are very cute and the page count is good for keeping kids engaged.
Thanks to Atmosphere Press and NetGalley for an eARC of this book for an honest review.
