I have a fascination with the UK, which is why I picked up the book. Plus there is the notion of the universe providing signs, in this case Alice meeting seven Dannys and all having an impact on her life. While that may be a little far-fetched, all of the Dannys manage to tie-together quite nicely in a six-degrees-to-Alice way. The story is realistic in following the everyday life of Alice; nothing outrageous or dramatic happens, and yet it is a lovely and intriguing tale –the everyday made interesting.
This novel was both as good as I expected and better than I presumed. I loved the synopsis and the British location, and so believed I would enjoy the tale. But the fact I was clueless about the genre made me put off reading it for weeks and discovering it was written by a man lowered my expectations (not that I do not think men write well, I just rarely find ones who I like the writing style of). I think the fact everything I assumed about how this book would be was surprisingly opposite cleared the slate for potential enjoyment rather than disappointment of not matching expectation. It is of dry wit and sorrow and a lovely tale.
