At the start of this book, I was not impressed where we were going with this almost satirical slant on Biblical events. The author has within the title; on the cover this caveat “A Whimsical Biblical History Story”. So ‘reader beware’ and who was I to complain having read this at the start. The question remains what does whimsical mean?
That said. As I set pre-conceived ideas aside, and a ready for it judgement attitude to the back of my mind I found there was much to enjoy and commend in this book.
The redeeming quality is the chunk of biblical content. While I would have preferred the actual OT story to be made accessible to all, with reference to chapter and verse. There was truth within this account that accorded with my own knowledge of the original text.
I also appreciated the links the author made between good and evil personalities, people and situations. He drew upon the characters and incidents he chose to illustrate and write about.
For me this book is a potential vehicle to bring readers into the sphere of study and want to learn more but as mentioned already, a chance has been missed as it does not show the links for a comparison with the original text.
It may appeal more to those without previous awareness of these stories, with limited biblical knowledge. But again, with that said, I think all can benefit from this short book.
It isn’t a children’s book. It is suitable for teenagers onwards, and anyone not stuck in their opinions.
It is good to be mentally challenged and confronted with new approaches.
On that level it is refreshing and an interesting read.
It is not for me to criticise the style of the book in this review but it is heavy on words and has too few illustrations , those included lifted the piece. Perhaps in the format of a graphic novel it might be even more accessible. But what do I know?
