Edgar is a Mormon, and according to Mormon tradition he has to serve as a missionary. He is sent to Lyon in France to carry out this mission. Which he starts to do, only to find his role increasingly problematic and he begins to question his faith and its tenets. This is a wonderful book, which explores his plight with empathy, insight and even humour. The book deals with serious issues, but in such a light manner that Edgar becomes totally relatable and the reader really roots for him. He runs away from Lyon and escapes to Paris, where a whole new world opens up to him. A brilliant coming-of-age tale, beautifully written and perfectly paced, thought-provoking and entertaining – not least because we are party to Edgar’s inner musings – and a novel that merits a wide readership.
A gentle coming-of-age novel about a young Mormon on his mission in France as he examines his beliefs, discovers the world outside his religion and contemplates his future.
it's a beautifully reflective novel holding up strongly held beliefs to a mirror in a sensitive way. the characters are beautifully drawn and the writing is vibrant and sumptuous. very well done.
Edgar is a Mormon missionary and is trying to 'find' himself and discover whether the religion is for him
I loved this book.. I have experience of the Mormon religion and I have disocover that the cult like behavior are good for some and not for others.
As Edgar travels through his journey he goes a lot of reflection and I think he grows a lot as a person within this story, and so ..did I. Edgar gave me a lot to think about..
It is wonderfully descriptive and beautifully told. i also think if readers are 'put off' by the subject matter they would miss out not reading this book.. It really is an eyeopener..
