Charlotte is an abused girl. She longs to escape her life. She meets another teenager who lives the same life, same bruises, same injuries. They plan to escape.
Charlotte drives to a remote resort with three year old Alice, in order to work for a living. Alice is hidden in her room, and Charlotte has to sneak food to her. Help comes from an unexpected source, Leo. He gives her food to take to her room, but she has to introduce him to Alice when Alice gets ill.
Then there is a hurricane warning - they have to escape!
Beautifully written - but oh, so emotional and heartbreaking.
The book is hard to read in places, when you read what people do to their children. But I really could not put this book down, and read far into the night.
Suspenseful and a real page turner.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
This author has given me lots of reading pleasure already and she did it again with this excellent story.
A luxurious resort on an island... This is what lots of people dream about and for Charlotte, the main character, it's an escape route too, but not the same one the guests will seek once they arrive...
She thinks she has found the perfect spot, but then the weather decides to interfere and lots of things start to go wrong. The sunny islands transforms into a spooky and creepy one.
It's hard to see the wood through the trees and she does not know who to trust anymore. To be able to survive she has to make a choice though. Did she pick the ones she can really count on or does she completely miss the ball?
I found this a super suspenseful story and that is not only due to the locked-room kind of thriller, but also because of the incredible talent the author possesses.
This book is just unputdownable and I was dragged into it from the very beginning until the last word. I loved cute Alice and admired Charlotte's strength.
I love it when a plan comes together in the end. 5 stars
Thank you
