I always keep an eye for portal fantasies ( one of my favourite sub-genres) and I was pleased to come this enjoyable portal fantasy with a touch of sci-fi).
This was an easy and enjoyable read- I loved the vivid descriptions of the worlds beyond the door and the interesting being Kate encounters. The underlying mystery of Kate’s Aunt disappearance and how Kate discovers her family’s heritage and gifts are fascinating. But it was the story of generational trauma that really made this story special- how the relationship between Kate’s grandmother and mother affected the relationship between her Kate and mother was realistic and keep me hooked to the story. I also loved how the story suddenly takes a slight sci-fi detour and adds another layer to the book!

This was such a interesting one and grabbed me from the start with its unique elements. The house pull on Kate, the journal entries of Esme about Trilesk were SO interesting. Everything about the different worlds, dimensions, the travelling, had me sold in this book... And as soon as I finished I had to go search if there will be a 2nd book and thank God there'll be. So there will be more of world/dimension traveling and this time with Kate and Esme as a team. Looking forward to that.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
First of all, I’ll start by saying that I could not put this book down! The story begins with Kate, an artist who is looking for some inspiration, visiting the house that belongs to her missing, and presumed dead, aunt Esmeralda. Something is drawing her to the house, but she doesn’t know what. She seems to be missing memories, but as she spends more and more time in the house, they start to come back to her. She eventually discovers that her aunt can travel to different worlds and dimensions, and maybe she isn’t dead after all.
Shannon Holly has a real knack for describing these worlds, and their inhabitants to us. I loved the characters in this book. My one gripe was that the book seemed very short, and there was a lack of tension. I really hope she continues to write more stories about these characters and this world.
