I got accepted to review this book years ago, but unfortunately never got around to reading it. Apologies for this.
I ended up DNFing this book after a few chapters because I was struggling to get into it. I just wasn't connecting to the story or characters and eventually lost interest. The premise of the book was appealing at first but sadly, it just wasn't the book for me and didn't grab my attention from in the first couple of chapters.
Afterworlds by Scott Westerfield is book one of the Afterworlds series. It is a young adult fantasy novel about a young girl who gets her book published. This book is very, very long and that is because this book is actually two books. One story is about Darcey, the author and the other is the book she has written. I really liked this idea, it was really clever if a little odd at times. I liked Darceys story, I thought there was some great insight into the publishing world but unfortunately I didn't like her. I do not think she was a very nice girl and I couldn't relate to her in any way. I preferred Lizzie, the protagonist from Darceys book, but I didn't like story that much. Afterworlds is a original take on the YA genre but it didn't quite work for me.
I tried really hard to get into this book but it just didn't click with me so I'm sorry I won't be able to review it. I really thought I would love this.
Afterworlds has a great concept, with its two perspectives shifting from a young author to the protagonist in her debut novel, but it didn't quite meet its full potential for me personally.
I loved how the stories intertwined and I enjoyed both Darcy's and Lizzie's narrative. I found it very interessting to read both a contemporary styled story mixed with the fantasy element and the arc that Darcy's story took. It was also an insightful into the life of a writer. However, I found that the length of the novel was quite intimidating and it took quite a long time to read.
