I tried to read this, I really did, but just could not get past the writing style. Was there editing? The story line was interesting and I feel if the story was about a third in length it would have been much tighter. The over explanation and wording choices broke the flow. I read the first third, then jumped to the end.
Livia is a human who lived with lycans until she was accused of something which lead her to flee. She ends up at the home of the Vampire King, Orion who believes she may just be his soulmate. He doesn’t want people to know as they may think he is weak for having a human as a mate but their bond is strong and he becomes desperate to have her as his Queen.
I really enjoyed the plot of this story. The first chapter had me hooked. The world was easy to envision in my mind as I was reading. However, I did find the book a little wordy and that by the end I felt the story could have been wrapped up sooner. It felt a little repetitive at times but it was a story I felt invested in. Orion was probably my favourite character. I would read more from this author.
Vampire King’s Consort is a fun, fast-paced ride that kept me hooked from start to finish. The story follows Livia, a human with a dark past, who stumbles into the vampire king Orion’s life—and their chemistry is off the charts. The tension, the drama, and the supernatural politics between vampires, humans, and lycans make this book hard to put down.
That said, the pacing can be a bit chaotic, and the jumps between characters and timelines were confusing at times. Some moments felt rushed, and the writing could have used a bit more polish to smooth things out. But honestly, the gripping storyline and the fiery romance more than made up for it.
If you love vampires, forbidden love, and a good dose of drama, this book is absolutely worth your time. It’s not flawless, but it’s a thrilling escape that I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys the genre!
DNF - i got to 21% (about 100 pages in). i received this ARC from netgalley in exchange for my honest review!
i wanted to like this book. it had an interesting premise, but i was just waiting for it to get better. the writing style felt simple to me - it almost made everything anticlimactic. the writing didn’t evoke any emotion, i never felt connected to any of the characters or particularly invested in them.
i also was confused because there are livia and orion chapters, but those chapters don’t only follow those two. the book had an omniscient narrator, but we bounced from character to character very quickly. it wasn’t always clear right away who we were following. similarly, the book jumped quickly from past to present and it was also confusing. many times it felt like i was missing something, but there simply wasn’t context.
i didn’t get very far, so i’m sure this changes, but orion felt very 1D. he’s super attracted to livia, and he’s scary dominant, and like that’s it.
again, the storyline seemed very interesting. i wish i could keep reading, because i am genuinely curious about what happens to livia.
I’m a fan of vampire stories, so I was excited to dive into this. The story centers on Livia, a human girl whose troubled past leads her to the doorstep of the vampire king, Orion. The tension between Livia and Orion was intoxicating and made this book difficult to put down. I found the pacing was a bit volatile which made it difficult to follow at times, but overall I enjoyed it.
Thank you to M.J. Sweets and Netgalley for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review
Very quick read, very enjoyable! Love the welldeveloped romantic story line. Kept me reading and fully immersed in this story!
I gave the book 3 stars due to the fact that I liked the overall story line! It’s an interesting story!
I LOVE vampire romances and I love a good “touch her and die” even more! There’s humans, vampires and lycans. There’s a vampire king and a lycan king. The book starts out with the female main character running from the lycan kingdom and ending up in the vampire kingdom by accident! The vampire king is inexplicably drawn to her, although he’d never been interested in another person, human or vampire.
A few notes about the book that I didn’t love and took away stars for-
Constantly describing the FMC as “tiny” and “so small” was slightly off putting. Coupled with the fact that she acted like a child as well… It made me a little uncomfortable at times. I don’t mind a smaller FMC (especially in comparison to a hunky MMC) but it was constant and overly mentioned, in my opinion. It gave the impression that she was a child, not a grown woman.
I also think the chapters could have been organized in a neater way. The POV seemed to bounce around to different people although the chapter would be labeled as the FMC or MMC.
Overall, I do like the concept and want to congratulate the author on their first book!!
There may have been good ideas behind this book, but its shortcomings in storytelling and character development ultimately lead to a disappointing reading experience. From the start, the pacing is erratic and challenging. The book is in a third-person point of view, creating a sloppy and disorganized story telling. The unnecessary inner thoughts of minor characters were consistently just thrown out there. Most characters fall flat and uncompelling. I won't get into the smut of the book because it is bad, but its becoming a norm with books now a days so if you like mediocre smut and insta wetness, check it out.
I am trying to be polite and constructive, but I was not able to get through this book at all.
I can’t truly comment on the plot line or characters as I DNF’d at chapter 5. The writing and grammar are just not there. The author tells instead of shows, and there are several instances of repetitive ideas being given. Also, why are we naming the characters at the beginning of each chapter like they are from that character’s POV when everything is written in 3rd person anyway??
Things that bothered me:
Describing the movement of hair as “crazy-like”?
Describing the FMC as in a rush/running for her life 4x over 3 paragraphs.
Describing a vase’s lacquer with “clear coat covering it”.
This one just isn’t for me.
Loved reading the mesmerizing and spellbinding romance story. When Livia is running away from the Lycans, King Orion, a powerful vampire, saves her life, brings her into his castle, and tries to ignore her. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written, and a must read riveting love story by the phenomenal author, M. J. Sweets.
The plot was engaging and I enjoyed the premise but I found the writing a little difficult to keep up with at times. This book is very fast-paced so you’ll be engaged throughout. Would recommend if you're on the hunt for a vampire romance
I was a bit confused on the setting for the story. The castle has a manure facility, but clothes included jeans, T-shirt, and sneakers? The humans have cars and surveillance cameras but the vampires ride horses?
Also the perspective of the reader changes constantly. One chapter is headed Livia but starts off from the perspective of Dylan. Since it's written from "third person omniscient" perspective, why should the chapters have headers at all? The book also goes back and forth between past and present, but there's no header to indicate that it changed. Maybe that's a formatting issue.
For some reason I had a tedious time getting into the story, and ended up skimming some of it just to get through. The plot was alright, but the writing was very simple. "He lifted her dress and rubbed between her folds."???
Some of the things the characters did or said seemed incongruous with how I perceived them, such as maids speaking out of place to royals and Livia having sudden fits of anger.
Sometimes I felt like I had missed something but when I went back to reread, I hadn't missed anything. For example, “I’m craving lamb with potatoes and corn tonight.”“I’ll inform him while you go with Dolia to prepare for an early dinner.” HIM who? I have to assume a cook but there was no mention of any cook, which made the statement feel very random.
Chapter 71 is a mess. Starts off with the queen crowning ceremony where Orion is attacked, then randomly jumps to other portions of the celebrations and Orion is uninjured. You learn later that the attack was a dream but in the moment it's just super confusing.
Because of all these things I'm honestly surprised at the high reviews I've seen for this book. A more cohesive story and better editing would fix most of the issues here.
I do enjoy a vampire book, so I was eager to give this book a go and I'm glad I did.
Livia is a human girl who is running from her past and the lycans and she stumbles upon Orion, the vampire king. As their relationship grows they face many trials for the other factions and from within. There are some rough scenes that may not be to every ones taste, but the author does give you a warning about this before the book begins.
It did feel like Livia was a eternal victim at one point, but she did learn to defend herself and I feel that all these characters have more story to tell.
Thank you for the Arc.
i saw vampires mentioned, so i immediately knew i had to read this lol!
🦇 the worldbuilding was so interesting! i honestly felt like i escaped reality and this was the world i lived in lol.
🦇 the writing style was also easy to understand and managed to suck you into the story effortlessly.
🦇 the characters were well developed and distinctive which i also loved!
🦇 it wasn't my new all time favourite book and i wasn't too much of a fan of insta-love trope but honestly, if you love vampires in books, i'm sure you will love this too!
3.5⭐️ (rounded up)
2.5🌶️
Thank you NetGalley for a copy of this ebook!
The story overall was interesting and definitely face paced. So much happens in this one book alone. I will say the writing at times was a little bit all over the place at times, so keeping up with it sometimes got difficult. The plot kept me intrigued the whole time. We have lots of different tropes in here: soulmates, insta-love, pregnancy, multi-creature society (vampires, Lycans, humans, and Elves).
As I know this is a self-published book, I understand, but definitely could have done with a bit more editing in my opinion, but again, it didn’t ruin the book for me or anything.
Overall, a good full circle story for me that had a whole bunch of tropes and things I like. Orion and Livia were a good couple and love story.
Vampire King's Consort is an enthralling journey through a world of forbidden love and deep-seated rivalries between humans, vampires, and lycans. The story follows Livia, a human whose troubled past brings her to the doorstep of the vampire king, Orion. Despite the barriers and his initial hostility, there’s an undeniable pull between them, igniting a romance that defies their divided world. I was completely swept up in the tension and chemistry between Livia and Orion, and I couldn’t put it down. The way the story unfolds keeps you turning the pages, rooting for love in a world stacked against it
This book is a huge 4 stars from me. I really loved every second of this story. I recommend everyone to read this book as fast as they can because it's really good.
Alright, this book is the rollercoaster romance I didn’t know I needed! Picture this: Livia’s dragging all her baggage up to the vampire king’s doorstep, and just when you think he’ll throw her out, he’s like, “Wait… maybe not.” The sparks between Livia and Orion are so good, and the whole humans-vampires-lycans feud? Makes it even juicier! If you love a bit of mystery, danger, and romance with a side of supernatural politics, Vampire King’s Consort is calling your name. 🦇
I really enjoyed reading this book, it had that vampire element that I was looking for from the description. The characters had that feel that worked in this type of book. It had that romance element that I wanted and was glad everything flowed in a great story. M.J. Sweets wrote this perfectly and am glad I got to read this.
