This was a slow build thriller. It gradually builds your tension instead of bam bam bam all the way through. So it's a very clever way of getting you to read more as the tension builds and clue are unraveled. It was slower than some thrillers but the storyline did it justice to be so.
This is my second book by Javier Castillo after reading The Snow Girl.
I did however struggle with this one a bit as I felt it was very slow after the initial few chapters. It sped up again nearer the end.
A good book but I have read similar that have more depth and pace
What a book! Although I'd heard of Javier Castillo before, this is my first time reading one of their books and it had me hooked from the start. The voice so easily drew me in, I didn't even notice how quickly I was reading it. The plot kept me on edge and the tension throughout was palpable. A dark, satisfying thriller worth picking up! I'll definitely be reading more by this author in future.
Unfortunately I could not get into this book. I did not grasp the story and could not gel with the characters.
Thank you for the opportunity to review

Brilliant.
Will you play the game?New York, 2011. A fifteen-year-old girl is found crucified in a suburb onthe outskirts. Miren Triggs, an investigative reporter for the Manhattan Press, unexpectedly receives a mysterious envelope. Inside: a Polaroid picture of another gagged and bound teenager, with a simple caption: "GINA PEBBLES, 2002". Miren Triggs and Jim Schmoer, her former journalism professor, follow the trail of the girl in the image while they investigate the crucifixion in New York. They will be led deep into a religious institution with strange rituals, and immersed in a dark secret that, if revealed, could change everything.
I loved it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Michael Joseph UK for giving me an advance copy.
I struggled with this one a bit as I felt it was dragging in the middle. It definitely picked up near the end and suddenly wrapped itself up very quickly after a few twists and turns. A good book but I think there are better books that are very similar.
I loved this thriller. It was gripping and hard to put down. I loved all the twists that were in this book. It truly is a great story
I loved The Snow Girl but, in a rarity for me, I think I loved the second instalment in the Mirren Triggs series even more.
Following on from The Snow Girl, Mirren has published her book and has become something of a celebrity. However, all Mirren wants is to return to journalism and help find missing girls. During her recent book signing, Mirren is given an envelope with a picture of a missing girl from the past with the note - "Wanna Play?". This sets of a chain of events for Mirren (and Jim) to take on another missing girls case.
Whilst I loved The Snow Girl, the one thing which I did struggle with was the constant shift in timelines which could make it difficult to follow. This time around there are no such issues with the book beginning with a terrifying scene and then moving three days previously and then towards the first scene (and beyond) (It's a lot less complicated!).
A really brilliant novel and one of my favourites so far this year!
