Firstly, this is part of a series but I do appreciate that with translated books, it's hard to play by the usual rules as they may not all be available. I have read a couple of other books in the series and want to play catchup properly but this is billed as number 9 in the UK, but number 17 in the series, so...
Anyway... all that aside... we start with a landslide, the cause not yet known, but it is pretty devastating for those who have, or rather now had, houses there. Det William Wisting is quick to offer his assistance on site to help make sure everyone is accounted for, a task he does very well. On returning the next day, he sees what could be another body. This is strange as everyone who should have been there, is accounted for, but he calls for assistance nonetheless, better safe than sorry. Which turns out to be the right call, and the body of a man is removed. Things get a bit weird when it is discovered that the man was already dead prior to the landslide. Weirder so when his identity is uncovered. Weirder still when his nationality and the fact that he was helping his nation's police in something dangerous comes to light...
And so begins a veritable cat and mouse game which has William not only investigating this man's murder, but all the rest of the things that brought him to that point. It's all a bit convoluted and interconnected so I won't go into detail here for fear of spoilers, but I will just say that there is quite a neat twist on a ransom demand that doesn't quite go according to script. That was quite amusing. But I digress, things really ramp up towards the end, and it all gets a bit too personal for William and he has to make some tough decisions.
Needless to say I was sucked in from the off, well we hit the ground running with the landslide, and once the body was found I was held captive for the duration, with the book spitting me out at the end exhausted from all the spinning, but also wholly satisfied. It had everything I need to make a good book a great read. Characters, plot, execution, pacing, conclusion... all quality. And it kept me guessing all the way through. What more do you want? Maybe the rest of the series in English would be a good start!
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

I have enjoyed previous stories featuring Wisting and his daughter, this one was very good, and the tension builds throughout. Trying to work out the "mole" is is tantalising.
Very well written with an unbelievable amount of rain. It never seemed to stop, not quite the vision you have of Norway. His daughter is slightly less of a pest than previous stories.
Good story.

The Traitor is the latest book in the deservedly and massively successful William Wisting series, and it certainly doesn't disappoint.
When a landslide hits an exclusive residential area of Larvik Wisting is one of the first on the scene, heroically rescuing a young woman but reassured by the crew of a rescue helicopter that there are no further bodies, alive or dead, on the site of the catastrophe.
The next day this is proved to be incorrect and Wisting investigates when it becomes obvious that a newly-discovered body is that of a murder victim.
The investigation takes on a cross-border slant, with a team of Swedish detectives arriving in Larvik to help their Norwegian counterparts, then a devastating one for Wisting. With massive consequences if he fails Wisting tackles extremely dangerous people who he realises are being tipped off from within his team.

Wisting goes from strength to strength and this is the strongest book in a series full of strong books. When things get personal Wisting is aided and abetted by journalist daughter Line as he is forced to make some very difficult decisions with serious ramifications. The tension is palpable as the book builds to a dramatic finale ...........and doubt about Wisting's future.
An excellent read.

A distress call is received over the radio, indicating a critical situation. William Wistling and Nils Hammer responded promptly to the emergency, arriving at the scene within minutes. Unfortunately, a massive crater had formed in Møllebakken, resulting in the destruction of eleven houses due to a landslide. The incident affected thirty-two people.

The next day, a body is spotted, but it soon becomes evident that the man was already dead before the landslide. Who is this man and how did he end up there?

Another great installment in the Chief Inspector William Wistling series, and this time everything he holds dear is being threatened: his family, his job, and his integrity.

Thank you to Michael Joseph and Penguin Random House UK for the ARC

Another good Wisting book. This time, whilst Wisting is trying to solve a kidnapping, his granddaughter Amalie is also kidnapped. Wisting is a good, honest cop but goes against his instincts giving in to the kidnappers demands. It has a great pace throughout reaching an exciting climax. A very enjoyable read - can't wait for the next one.
