It pains me to leave a 2 star review for this book, as there is a lot to like. The first half of the book is great and, even though I had no idea it was the last in a trilogy, the book held up being read without the others. The problems came in the second half, when the main characters just became so unlikeable once they had married.
I get that the author was trying to show the tension in the marriage of two very different people, but it ended up that I was not at all invested in them or their marriage. Valentine was whiny and demanding, her husband was ‘protecting her’ and making unilateral decisions for her, which I hated.
The final dramatic happening in their lives felt rushed and tacked on for effect and, again, I struggled to care about it.
Very sad since I have read the author’s other work and enjoyed it, but I can’t say I will be picking up the rest of the trilogy.
