Tangled Power is the second book in Witt's Compass Points trilogy. The Compass Points have to learn to work together to defeat Aterra, a god who has set everything into an unbalance in his search for more power. The book follows the Rose and Luc as they and the other two Compass Points track down Aterra. Rose and Luc and a wonderful couple in this series and I ship them so very much! The ending was heartbreaking and now I'm off to read the third book ASAP.
This is the second book in the Compass Points series, The book picks up right after the events of the first book. Rose becomes the Norden Point and she and the other Compass Points go on a journey to find Aterra. Rose and Luc continue to build a relationship and she makes magical weapons for each of the Points.
I really like the world the book is set in. The magic, history and politics are interesting and engaging. Rose’s process for building magical weapons is very unique. I thought it might feel repetitive seeing it done more than once, but it wasn’t at all.
The relationship between Rose and Luc is sweet. I love the way they help each other move on from past trauma. Rose also starts to build more of a relationship with the other Points - Juliette and Carter. I enjoyed learning more about them.
This series has a refreshing gentleness to it. I like my intense thrillers and enemies to lovers drama, but also enjoyed the more relaxed pace in these books.
I am seriously obsessed with this series. I love the characters and the way that the magic system is set up. It was really need to dive more into the compass points powers and see the things that they had been holding back that they could do. I also loved that they started to band together in this book. The world building is one of my favorites in the past few years for a fantasy series. I think that the author did a fantastic job of creating a world that was fantastical but enough real that it was easy to imagine yourself stepping into! I cannot wait to read book three and see how this concludes!!
Rose and Luc have made a lot of progress in uniting the Compass Points to take down Aterra. But they need more information and they need to behave more like a team and less like power-hungry individuals. As they track Aterra through the land, Rose learns more about her counterparts and their magic while making weapons for them and earning their trust.
The first book was pretty good, but this one was so sloooooowwwww. There was so much walking around and talking to people and evaluating magic. GAG. Jillian, this should have been a duology, girl. This book did not have enough substance to be its own thing. I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you will wrap this up well, but GEEZ. You just about lost me about 40% through this one. I only powered through because I ADORE Luc.
Tangled Power is the second book in the Compass Points series by Jillian Witt. This books focuses on the continuing story of Luc and Rose and their struggle to combat the Mist Plague and the imbalance on the Continent. As the new Norden Point and the current Suden Point, Rose and Luc worked to unite the four formerly combative Compass Points in a quest to locate the god Attera and Rose’s former best friend Aidan in order to stop Attera’s quest for power. This second book was incredibly written and enjoyable cover to cover. I loved reading about the deepening of the relationship between Rose and Luc as well as their relationships with the other two Compass Points. It was inspiring to watch as Rose, who had stayed in hiding for a decade, stepped out of the shadows and took the lead in forming an effective partnership between people who harbored a great deal of distrust for each other as well as secrets about their powers. Her policy of openness and honesty was infectious. This book ended with a cliffhanger which made me very grateful that the ARC for Bound Paths was already loaded in my kindle, waiting for me to dive straight in! If you are a reader that enjoys romantasy, this novel should be very satisfying, especially as the last book in the trilogy is available for you today! This book is available in Kindle Unlimited.
I would like to thank Jillian Witt, Behind The Pages PA, and Netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I enjoyed this book! I didn't like it as much as the first one, and I feel like it's because it was less of a romance, I think. I like the overall plot of the story, with introducing the two other Compass Points and developing the characters there, and how it just dove right into where the story left off in book one. I LOVE Arie's character, and I liked getting Luc's POV in this one, as well. What I didn't like - Rose evaluating power and the constant descriptions of scent and powers just was too repetitive for me. I understand that Luc smells like pine and cinnamon, and I felt like I was just skimming those descriptions by the end. I also felt like that descriptions of people and places could be developed a bit more. Sometimes I struggled to imagine what was happening as descriptions of setting, movements, and appearances were vague. The final battle scene with Attera was so good, though, and the cliffhanger was excellent.
This series overall was great! There were a couple of things left for the reader to infer. I am not the biggest fan of that, I rather the author go into detail or provide some book art when it comes to creatures, lands, books, spells, characters etc. Overall this was a cute and quick series. No big issues. I will be following this author for her next project!
3.5/5
I really wanted to love this book more. I feel bad, especially when comparing my feelings with other reviews, and how much everyone else loved this book! I found myself starting to get fatigued with the characters. Rose started to feel like a Mary Sue. She gets more and more perfect, and she feels flawless to the end. She can just dip into herself and find these access points to everyone else. Why is she the sole point? Just because she's Norden and Osten or whatever?
I grow tired of perfect characters very quickly. Everyone else, their skepticism or growing strengths endeared themselves to me. Luc was a bit grating, but I still found him okay to deal with. This book just felt like an offering piece of fanservice by the author.
Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced copy.
In Tangled Power, we find Rose, Luc, and the crew attempting to work together to deal with the situations and information they were left with at the end of book one. I enjoyed getting to the development in Rose and Luc's relationship while also getting tidbits of information about a certain set of gods.
Tangled Power does a lot of exploration into the magic system works and how abilities can interact, whether that's between compass points or gods. At times, it may feel like the plot itself is not pushing forward, but the focus is working on the setup. Oh my goodness, the last little bit holds a ton of action, and after that cliffhanger, I must know what's coming next! I didn't think things were headed in that direction.
Thanks to Jillian, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op, and NetGalley for an eARC of this book for an honest review.
After reading books 1 and 2 in this series back to back, I almost want to go back and edit my rating for book 1. They really should have been combined into a single book. All the world building I wanted in book 1 was in book 2. There were a lot of chapters to wade through to finally get to the meat and potatoes of the plot.
So good!!! I'm loving this trilogy so muchhh omg! I totally recommend everyone to read this book as fast as they can because it's really good and the characters are fantastic.
Thank you for the arc copy of this book
I read the first one and it was an okay read- I decided to give this book a shot because sometimes hidden gems are found that way. I just couldn't get into this book. I really really tried to read it but might have to pick it up at another time since its unknown whether im hitting a reading slump or if the book I read before this was just so good that its going to be hard to find another book to match it?
Thank you so much again for the arc copy of this book
Jillian Witt wrote this perfectly and enjoyed how good the sequel was in the Compass Points series. The characters were everything that I was looking for and enjoyed the way this continued the story. The characters had that feel that I was expecting and enjoyed the overall story in this. Jillian Witt has a strong writing style and can’t wait for the next book.
I received an advance reader's copy of Tangled Power (Compass Points #2) by Jillian Witt from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I’m always excited to read a new-to-me author and Jillian Witt did not disappoint. Overall, I quite enjoyed the book and the morning flew by while I read. There was action, intrigue, and chemistry. The characters were fairly well-crafted, the pace of the novel was mostly steady, and there were some surprises. Definitely worth reading the entire series if future books are this well crafted.
This was a great continuation to the first book! The plot and world building continued, and this go around, you get the MMC's background story. The magic system is also different compared to other fantasy books. The romance is very minimal as well for those who don't like a whole lot of romance within their fantasy books.
Thank you Netgalley, the author, and publisher for the arc
