This was a strong sequel in the Chronicles of the Fates series, it had that feel that I was looking for from the first book. The characters had that overall feel that I was looking for and enjoyed the way they felt in this story. The plot had that element that I was hoping for and enjoyed the overall concept going on. Monica Ageno has a strong writing style and am excited for more in this series.
Sought by Destiny had a lot of potential, but I found myself a bit underwhelmed compared to the first book. While it started off charming—I was rooting for Feylin to finally be with someone who truly cared for her—the story slowed down considerably in the middle, and the characters’ decisions left me more frustrated than intrigued. I’ll be honest: Storm didn’t win me over at all, and I couldn’t understand why Feylin was so drawn to someone who seemed unwilling to communicate or listen to her. Zarius, who’s caught in the middle, deserves way better than this complicated square of relationships.
The world-building and magic system, while creative, felt more confusing in this installment. Boundaries were inconsistent, like how a potion witch could be labeled as a top threat, yet mind manipulation magic seemed to get a free pass. It also seemed like new types of magic or abilities would appear whenever the plot needed them, which sometimes destabilized the story’s focus.
That said, the writing style is enjoyable, and there’s something about the character dynamics that’s undeniably fun. If you’re already invested in Feylin’s journey, this book might still be worth the read for its unique charm, even if it left me wanting a bit more cohesion.
