This is the first book in what seems to be a great new series, featuring retired cop Blake Glover, now working as a taxi driver. I really like Blake, although he is a troubled character, as he returns to his home town and tries to find out what really happened to his mother, she died when he was young. Set in the north east of Scotland, with believable characters, there is plenty of tension and suspense throughout. The plotting is centred around the manufacture of drugs and their effect on addicts. Another well written story from the author and a new series to look forward to. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

I whizzed through The Cost in a matter of days. It's a great addition to the Tartan Noir genre and it was nice to read something set somewhere I little more unusual.

The plot itself is a little complicated with lots of characters, but Cry does a great job of giving the reader clarity. It's a great first in series book and I already feel like I know all of the main players.

Looking forward to Book 2!

In this book we are introduced to a new 'policeman' albeit a retired one who returns home to Fraserburgh initially in search of how his mother died but then becoming involved with a mysterious house and drug running. Written partially from personal history, the book has you constantly guessing who is doing what to whom and is Blake going to discover what actually happened to his mum. It was something a wee but different for a murder/mystery and I enjoyed the latent humour which Morgan has throughout his novels. Look forward to book 2 now.

A fast paced Scottish noir novel featuring Blake Glover, a retired Glasgow detective who has come back to Fraserburgh and finds himself in the thick of a big picture problem. He's meant to be driving a taxi and then looking into what happened to a woman but there's bad juju out there what with drugs, trafficking and conspiracy. Good atmospherics and a character who is fully formed made this a good read. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. And the storytelling is excellent!

Have read previous Morgan Cry’s novels, so was looking forward to seeing what this new novel offered.
Didn’t disappoint, good characters, story moved along at pace and very satisfying ending.
Will look forward to further works.

Retired Glasgow cop Blake Glover takes a taxi job in Fraserburgh, digging into his past and a woman’s disappearance, only to land in unexpected danger. Fast-paced and gripping, this thriller brings the town’s smuggling history to life. Can’t wait for Glover’s next case!

Thanks to Severn House and NetGalley for ARC.

Blake Glover spent 30 years as a PC in Glasgow. Never rose through the ranks, never showed ambition. Now in retirement he's drawn back to Fraserburgh, town of his earliest childhood memories. He gets a job driving a taxi for a firm even more ramshackle than he is, and he starts to contact people from his past, looking for stories of his mother. He is asked to look into the disappearance of a young woman from a local upmarket hotel, and finds out more than he bargained for, which puts himself and others in more danger than he could have foreseen.

This is cracking. Fraserburgh, the historic fishing port, as smuggling hub is a tale as old as time and this breathes fresh life into it. Glover and his associates are well drawn and the plot fairly careens along. I had some big issues with the big secret, which I won't reveal for fear of spoilers, but I just went with it, ignored the shoddy suspension and enjoyed the ride. Looking forward to the next outing for Glover. As this is the first Morgan Cry book I've read (disgraceful admission as he's a Bloody Scotland stalwart) I've now rectified that error.

this was a good book! It reminded me of the movie "carry on" and it had a similar thrilling tense felinbg to it. I liked the twists and turns, and how it kept me entertained the whole time. Good read!!

Thank you to NetGalley, to the author, and to the publisher for this complimentary ARC in exchange for my honest review!!!

Thank you NetGalley and Severn House for the eARC.
To begin with I enjoyed this book. I love books set in Scotland, but this one disappointed me. As the story progressed it felt more and more over the top: a science fiction-like drug being the main crime along with murder just didn't do it for me.
