This is a lovely guide to the process and inspiration for drawing. Although it does introduce some concepts such as pattern, scale, and contrast, the focus isn't on technique. It's more of a guide as to how to first get started, and then how to approach drawing in a playful, exploratory, and personal way. The drawings throughout are charming, and children (and perhaps adults!) will find inspiration in the exercises at the back of the book.
This book would be absolutely perfect for art teachers or read-alouds with art projects. I really liked the thought process and how it explained everyone starts the same; picking up the pencil. It would be great for a variety of ages or even used in chunks for younger kids. It’s rare to see books approach art or the process of art this way which makes it unique. The artwork and illustrations meshed perfectly for a visual telling of the text.
Thank you NetGalley, Tundra Books, and Elizabeth Haidle for the early access copy of Drawing Is…
Drawing Is… is a beautifully illustrated, engaging drawing prompt book that teaches its readers how to draw in a clear and imaginative way. This can be used with children and adults alike. Drawing Is… teaches different techniques and the importance of continued practice. This will be a great edition to libraries for drawing lovers.
This is such a beautiful book for readers of all ages who want to embark on their own artistic journey. I have recently been a long term substitute art teacher for an elementary school, and it’s wild because I would never consider myself artsy. Every day I remind the students of the fact that all art is beautiful and that all famous art came from others breaking the rules. This book is so healing in that it reinforces that art and drawing is a journey and one with guidelines that you can play around within. Art doesn’t have to be perfect or profound but instead reminds you and the world that you exist. I can’t wait to do the exercises in the back of the book with my daughters!
