I've been eagerly waiting for a new rom-com by Dana Hawkins, and this one did not disappoint! Thank you so much to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for sending me an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
So Not My Type focuses on the workplace romance between the established but "self-made" project manager, Sophie, and the daughter of her CEO, Ella, who has been given the position of manager despite her lack of work experience. When Sophie is asked to mentor Ella, she has to work hard to set aside her long-standing grudge against her new colleague... and Ella needs to put aside her assumptions about her mentor, too. Late nights at work, office camaraderie, and an unexpectedly steamy hot tub situation show the women that there might be more to their relationship than they initially thought.
This is a fun, lighthearted romance that reads quickly and is enjoyable from start to finish. While the two MCs felt too stuck in their grudges against each other at first (and I sometimes really wanted to jump in and make them TALK properly), I was glad to see their character development and found myself rooting for them very quickly. The chemistry between them was evident page after page, and Hawkins wrote the build-up beautifully, leading to a wonderful romance! I also enjoyed the side characters, especially Ella's driver and her father, who unexpectedly grew on me quite suddenly in the second half of the book. Hawkins also handled Ella's chronic illness thoughtfully, adding an extra layer of depth to her relationship with Sophie through the way they navigated conversations about it.
I also loved the cameo appearances of characters from Hawkins' previous books in this series—I do love interconnected romance novels!
Overall, I'd heartily recommend this to anyone who loves sapphic romance and workplace settings, ranging from light banter to the stress of tight deadlines.
This book was so cute! I wasn’t sure how I would like the whole nepotism aspect of the book but it didn’t bother me too bad. Probably because for the most part, Ella understood her privilege. I would’ve liked more in the end, more of a conversation. Plus, without giving anything away, I feel like a conversation between Sophie and Ella about what to do and how to handle what happened, when it happens again. Because it will happen again, it’s a medical condition and avoiding your partner for weeks isn’t going to cut it.
I enjoyed this quirky office relationship romance where both characters were well defined and had depth. I learned a lot about seizures, the knowledge of which wasn’t imparted in a boring scholastic manner but was well integrated into the story. I didn’t realise this was part of a series but it certainly can be read as a stand alone book.
First off I didn’t realise this was series until writing this review however it is a standalone book
love a good enemies to lovers romance, it was the right mix of sassy, funny, wholesome and sexy.
I love how the author spoke about the after effects of seizures, most people think you have one and then that’s it but it’s so much more and I love how that was conveyed through the book.
Honestly just a great book and I didn’t see the plot twist coming my jaw was on the floor with that one. Can’t wait to read the next one

The third installment to the Single in Seattle series is just as fun and messy as the previous two books, and I adored it!
In this, we get Sophie's story featuring her independent workaholic tendencies clashing with her new co-worker - the boss's daughter.
Something about Hawkins's writing is so addictive, and I never regret time spent reading this series. Sophie's journey to prioritizing more than her work is a work in progress and so relatable. Ella trying to balance her medical condition with needing independence and proving something to herself is also super relatable as someone with a disability. Overall, a fun time. I hope this isn't the last in the series!
Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for the opportunity to read and review.
A really fun read to follow the workplace romance between the hardworking Sophie and the CEO’s daughter Ellie. Of course Sophie thought Ellie was entitled and did not deserve her place but things develop in a really cute way. Extra interesting with the Ellie’s epilepsy issues.
Prejudices often ruin first impressions.
Misunderstandings lead to incorrect assessments and superficial knowledge and observation do not provide a complete picture.
This is especially true for people and is exactly what Ella and Sophie experience and live through.
The first meeting between the two of them several years ago was catastrophic and Sophie's chaotic life is certainly no comparison to the well-behaved and well-ordered life of Ella, her boss's daughter and unfortunately also her new project manager with no experience at all! Ella has to prove herself and tries to do this with all her might, because she can't just take risks like every other person in life and live her life the way she wants.
She has a condition and she is regularly reminded of this by her helicopter parents, mothered and almost suffocated by it.
She needs this job to prove it to herself and the world.
No one, not even Sophie, who is absolutely cool and beautiful but also snarky to Ella, will stop her.
Come what may.
A forced-proximity and enemies-to-lovers romace that touched me deeply. I won't go into detail about Ella's condition as it is the key to all of Ella's feelings and behaviors and how everything changes quickly.
I particularly liked the change in the characters and how they saw themselves behaving and changing in a way and becoming someone they never wanted to be, all because they were burdened by prejudices and misperceptions.
The story was also very hot and sweet and we meet some favorites from the previous books again! It was a pleasure!
Thanks to Storm Publishing, Dana Hawkins and NetGalley for the Arc!
Note: some minor spoilers in this review.
This one was pretty enjoyable! The writing was very solid and the chemistry between the characters was excellent. I liked their banter and their transition from disliking one another to crushing on each other was cute. The book also did a great job making me feel the emotions of the characters, particularly Sophie. I really felt the stress that she was going through for the campaign, and it had me on edge through the whole final week. The relief when it was finally over was satisfying. Another thing I appreciated was that characters from her other books were in this one as well. That's always a fun thing to see!
I do have a couple dislikes with the book, however, such as the fact that we never find out what exactly was said by Ella in their first interaction to start the animosity between them. I kept thinking we'd find out later in the book since it's mentioned a few times, but it never happens. As well, I didn't like the fact that Ella decides at the end that living with her parents is totally fine after making such a huge deal about being suffocated and having an actual breakdown about it. It seemed like it kind of took away from her character development in working so hard to become independent and earn her freedom.
Overall though, this book was pretty good and I was shocked by the twist at the end involving Jasmine. The signs were there, but I still didn't see it coming! Reccomend giving this one, and her other books (featuring characters like Remi, Maya, Charlie, etc) a try. 4.6/5 stars rounded up.
This was a strong third entry in the Single in Seattle series, it had that element that I was expecting and enjoyed from the world and writing. Dana Hawkins has a strong writing style and was hooked from the first page, it uses the romance overall and was a great feel that I wanted more.
**So Not My Type** by Dana Hawkins is an engaging slow-burn romance that blends the enemies-to-lovers trope with a forced proximity narrative. Set against the backdrop of a Seattle advertising agency, the story is told from the POV of two protagonists: Sophie and Ella.
Sophie is a determined and resourceful twenty-something with ambitions to carve out her place in the competitive world of advertising. Her no-nonsense approach and fiercely independent spirit often clash with the privileged world that Ella inhabits. Ella, the educated daughter of the agency's powerful boss, carries the weight of high expectations and a secret that has really complicated her life.
When forced to work together on a crucial project, tensions flare as their personalities collide. Amid the pressure of their project, Sophie and Ella must decide whether they will let their differences divide them or will they make something extraordinary.
If you are looking for a rainy day or a beach read, this fun book may be right up your alley! Many thanks to NetGalley and Storm for the ARC.
This is a sapphic romance where one of the main characters deals with epilepsy and struggling to find independence. The author hits the nail right on the head about the struggles of growing up with epilepsy and the impact that it has on your life and your family's life. The plot twist near the end I did not suspect either. I can say I will be checking out her other books as well as getting this one as soon as it is available in paperback.
Thank you NetGalley and Publisher for this book!!
What a great book! I enjoyed this one a lot!!! I had a hard time putting it down. I enjoyed the chemistry between the characters. Great writing style!! This was a first by this author for me but will not be my last!
This was a pretty light hearted FF office/workplace romance that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy on the inside. It took me a bit to get into this one, but once I started clicking with the characters, the pages started flying by. If you are looking for a wholesome, slow burn, FF romance book, definitely give this one a shot.
Having lived 10+ years in the Seattle area this one definitely made me reminisce about all of the cool hotspots and locales.
Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
