Life is complicated. You can change your friends, but you can't change your neighbors. They're on the other side of the fence. And you both know plenty about one another. Good, bad, and definitely evil at times.
Jill and Wendy have lived next door from one another since they both were blushing brides. They'd share a bottle of wine on the back porch late at night when the kids were tucked in. They'd also shared secrets until the secrets began to tell on them.
This was my first Sue Watson novel. I have plenty earmarked to read through the years. But this one, in particular, got my attention. It's the domestically based novels that certainly catch our eye. It's that thin line that separates possibilities. Characters seem almost too real at times. And then their motives lean forward into more and more questions.
We'll come to find that there is a death within two families. Leo was the son of Jill and Tim. Leo and Wendy's daughter attended the Senior Prom that night. But things went awry. The police have ruled an accident or even a possible suicicde. Jill is not so sure. Leo's death has been driving her almost off the cliff since that time.Jill wants answers.
Sue Watson sets the stage for these two friends in a cottage in Wales. Like the burst of stars on a frigid night, it's time for a showdown. Watson creates an almost panoramic view of these two friends perched almost like Samurai warriors. They each wrap their truth in lies and innuendos. But who is actually telling the truth?
Watson creates her storyline in opposing chapters entitled Jill and then Wendy. We readers become part of the dismantling of the so-called facts as they are presented. We find ourselves weaving back and forth as to which team owns our allegiance. We get tricked time and time again. And it's a gnarly tangle of details and truth. Wife, Mother, Liar will get under your skin. And isn't that what neighbors always tend to do?
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Bookouture and to Sue Watson for the opportunity.
Fantastic read about neighbours who become best friends before kids and maintain that friendship through to their teen children's lives. Told from the two mothers' perspectives. They endure an unimaginable loss and as they navigate that the truths start to spill out. The whole story comes out in bits with a stunning conclusion!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!
Billed as absolutely addictive and totally gripping psychological thriller with a breathtaking twist, Sue Watson’s latest novel: Wife, Mother, Liar certainly lives up to its promise. I’ve been a fan of this author for quite a while so always move her books up to the top of the TBR pile. This book had me hooked from page one and kept me entertained and guessing to the end. The twist was brilliant and I can highly recommend this novel. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the chance to review.
I've heard alot about Sue Watson, but this is my first book by her. Boy, have I been missing out! I loved the dual narratives. As the old saying goes, "there's her side, her side, and the truth". I was hooked into Jill and Wendy's story from the first page! Can't wait to dive into more by Watson!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book.
A good neighbour is worth their weight in gold. A best friend is also worth their weight in gold and when your good neighbour becomes your best friend, well you are a very rich person.
You share everything with them, the good times as well as the bad times until you have the feeling they want to have something you are not willing to share.
And then there is that one night when everything changes and you won't rest before you have the confirmation of what you suspect..
The author allows both friends taking turns to tell their side of the story. Is Jill correct in her assumptions of the truth or is this what she wants to believe? Is Wendy telling tales or does she really not have anything to hide?
Little by little ture colors are being shown.
I utterly enjoyed this book being shocked by the outcome. Great storytelling and characters and heartbreaking revelations. 5 stars
Thank you
Two best friends. A weekend away to revisit the past. A weekend to get answers to the most important questions. So many secrets to uncover and even more lies to hide. I could not put this book down. Absolutely riveting from the first page. I enjoyed the writing style and character development. Five whole stars!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the e-ARC. This is an honest review.
Jill and Wendy are next door neighbours, and were once the best of friends. Jill and Tim moved into Lavender Close as newly weds almost twenty five years ago, and soon met up with Wendy and Robert. Over the years their friendship grew, but when Jill became pregnant, their closeness eased off, though they continued to mingle. Years later, Wendy’s daughter and Jill’s son became an item, much to Wendy’s joy and Jill’s dismay. Only after their prom did things come to a head and tragedy drove quite a wedge between the two families. It is somewhat of a surprise to Wendy that eighteen months after the fateful night, Jill invites her to a little break in rural Wales so they can have some time together.
An easy, quick read told from the POV of Wendy and Jill. Moved along nicely though a little repetitive. No great reveal though it did tie up well.
A good lazy day read.
2.5* rounded up.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture.
Wow , what a book! Couldn’t put it down at all! Lots of secrets, twists and turns! Kinda gutted it’s finished now!
Jill and Wendy live next door to each other. They become firm friends, accepting each other's faults.
Then, their teen children attend the prom together and there is a tragedy. This terrible incident divides the families.
Jill is desperate to find out the truth of that night, and will stop at nothing to get the truth.
A riveting tale told from two points of view. There are twists and turns, and secrets are revealed in every chapter.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
Another great read from Sue Watson. Alternate chapters from friends Jill and Wendy who are on a weekend away in rural Wales. Jill is recently separated from womanising husband Tim and also grieving the loss of her son Leo. Wendy has always been the life and soul of the party but since the death of Leo, her life has also changed dramatically due to her daughter Olivia, Leo's friend.
This weekend will see friendship changed forever as secrets are revealed and long held suspicions are voiced.
Each time I read a Sue Watson book I'm drawn into the novel straightaway, she builds the tension and slowly releases it a chapter at a time. It's never a case of just one more chapter as you can't put it down until you've finished.
It's always a great day when I see a new book by Sue Watson coming out, but right now I'm sitting here speechless. I have loved every one of her books, but this one far surpassed the others. It was so crazy good I couldn't read it fast enough but now that I finished it I'm sad that it's finished.
Neighbors turned friends Jill and Wendy are living the good life in a beautiful neighborhood with their families. Though Jill has had problems trying to conceive in the past, she finally gives birth to her son around the same time Wendy has a daughter. This should have brought them closer but it seems to put a strain on their friendship and drives them apart. Years later tragedy strikes and leaves their barely hanging on by a thread friendship in tatters. The narrative is told through both their POV'S and their take on the truth of what happened.
Welcome to the neighborhood where the outer beauty is tainted by neighbors who aren't who they present as and everyone is hiding secrets. This book is so dark and twisty!! It's the perfect definition of domestic suspense. This is a must read but make sure your schedule is clear! I absolutely cannot wait for Sue's next book!!
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy
Sue Watson's books are must reads for me and this twisted, crazy, drama filled book is another must read.
Talk about drama and you may think you know but trust me not everything is what it seems and the characters are unlikable but it's those types of characters that you love them even though you dont like them.
I read this in one sitting as there was no way I was putting it down as I had to keep going and find out what's next with these two "friends".
A definite recommend
Yes!! 5 stars!! Ehat a book, twists, great story great characters, hard to say anything but great thing about this book. I devoured it!!!
Sad I sailed through it and it's over though
Sue Watson is one of my favorite authors.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for an early release of this book.
WOW Sue certainly did it again with this book. Absolutely brilliant with all the twists definitely like being on a roller coaster as you never know what is going to happen next.
Thank you Netgallery for letting me read this book as I love all of Sue Watson books and this one definitely didn't disappoint. Each chapter kept you wanting to continue reading and the characters were brilliant. Definitely one to recommend to other people to read.
Well done Sue another brilliant book x
Great book from Sue Watson. You will not know who to trust in this book. I must admit I never saw the ending coming.
I abandoned what i was reading to grab hold of this latest offering from Sue Watson.
A fabulous drama about neighbours who become friends and entwined with each others families.
Jill and Wendy appear to be totally different people, one is carefree and full of life the other is paranoid and envious but everything is not what it seems.
Such well written characters especially the main one's who i took turns in disliking.
Great twists and the who done it became epic!
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
Book slump is officially over thanks to Sue Watson. Wife Mom, Liar was a one gulp read. I literally could not put it down.
The story begins with two best friend neighbors raising their children together until one of the kids ends up dead and the friendship is destroyed as one mom searches for the truth over what happened. At least that’s what I thought it was about. Then I kept reading.
This twisty novel kept zigging when I thought it would zag. It was a roller coaster with no breaks. The tension never let up.
Stylistically my favorite part was how each chapter ended. The last sentence compelled me to keep turning the pages- there were some jaw dropping cliffhangers.
Fans of an unreliable narrator and frenemies will love this psychological thriller.
