Brilliant! I loved it.

Big Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.

I had so many theories running through my head from start to finish on this one. A fabulous guessing game for me!
A brilliant book that isn't slow in ramping up the mystery and edge of seat needing to read and know what happens next element. The setup of the book also does really well to aid this keep reading need.
Yeah and Matt are preparing for marriage. But this isn't Leahs first attempt. Thing is her 1st disappeared.
I was suspicious of everyone. And wondered if Leah was being honest with us too,ha. And then I thought surely something has got be involve Matt being the bad guy. He so seamlessly slips in. Or did he.
And if Callums body was never found? Then a note supposedly from Callum arrives. And so the finding out what really went on begins...

The First Husband
A mind-bending suspense about a bride-to-be, her fiancé and her (deceased) ex-husband. Or is he?
Heart racing mystery with a twist!

Captivating! This book was so good from start to finish, and kept me on the edge of my seat. It kept me up late at night wanting to know what was going to happen next. This book was full of twists that I didn’t see coming. Thank you. NetGalley.

My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The First Husband’ written by Elizabeth Carpenter in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Leah and Matt are preparing for their marriage at Lakeside Cottage, the same place that her first husband Callum disappeared eight years ago. Leah fears for her own safety and that of their three-year-old son Noah when a threatening note arrives addressed to Leah, supposedly from her late husband. But his body was never found and he was presumed dead, so has Callum been hiding for the past eight years or has the note come from someone pretending to be him?
‘The First Husband’ tells the story of the days and hours preceding Callum’s disappearance eight years ago, and moves to the present time as Leah and Matt prepare for their wedding surrounded by their family and friends. It’s an entertaining novel, well-written with nicely described characters, and although fairly predictable and not the most exciting I’ve read, it’s an interesting novel that kept me involved waiting to know what was going to happen next.

This is the first book I have read from this author. It was ok but not thrilling just something missing for me. It was slow in parts and a little confusing with the back and forward of timelines. I would definitely give her next book a try. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.

First book from this author. First impression as I started to read it, it had me turning the pages.
Leah is getting married a 2nd time, to her 1st husband’s best mate. The weekend is spent at same place her 1st husband disappeared. Her future husband’s parent’s cabin.
Leah starts getting notes. As the book progresses, his body was never found. Is he alive? Is he the one sending messages, leaving notes.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC

In two days’ time, I’m getting married again. It’s bittersweet, after everything that happened. But when I look at my cheeky son and his loving, handsome father, I know I’m doing the right thing in moving on. Then a card comes through the letterbox: Two days to go. I can’t wait to see you. I’ve missed you so much. All my love, Callum.
Callum was my first husband. He disappeared eight years ago, leaving only secrets and pain behind. He’s dead. But as my friends and family gather for my big day – all the same people who were there the night Callum vanished – my fear grows. Things go horribly wrong with the wedding plans. And then an anonymous note threatens my son.
This was a great premise and done very well! Super interesting. It had me from the start and didn't let go of me. Highly recommend this one if you enjoy thrillers with twists and turns that you don't see coming! 4⭐
I received an advanced complimentary digital copy of this book from Netgalley. Opinions expressed are my own.

Eight years ago, Leah’s husband disappeared at Lake Windermere, his body never found.
Now, Leah is about to marry Matt, who was Callum’s best friend. They are getting married in the place that Callum disappeared.
As strange things happen in the lead up to their wedding, Leah is worrying about who is planning on ruining hers and Matt’s wedding.
When someone sends Leah a message threatening her and Matt’s son, Noah, she is determined to discover what is going on.
I enjoyed this story, it was entertaining as well as an easy read.
An enjoyable whodunnit and I had no idea until nearing the end just what was going on.
A story where everyone has some kind of secret that they don’t want coming out.
My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

Elisabeth Carpenter’s The First Husband is a masterclass in suspense and mystery, weaving a story full of twists that keep readers guessing until the very end. From the outset, the book hooks you with a tantalizing premise: Leah, preparing for her second wedding to Matt—her first husband’s best friend—finds herself revisiting a past shrouded in unanswered questions and unresolved tension.
Carpenter’s pacing is exceptional, with each twist meticulously placed to build intrigue and heighten the suspense. The setting, returning to the very place Leah’s first husband mysteriously disappeared, adds an atmospheric layer that enhances the tension. It’s a constant reminder of the secrets lurking beneath the surface, making the story feel both intimate and unsettling.
Leah is a deeply relatable and well-drawn protagonist, navigating a complex mix of emotions as she balances her present happiness with Matt and the haunting uncertainties of her past. The narrative’s emotional depth is matched by its sharp plotting, creating a story that is as engaging emotionally as it is thrilling.
The First Husband is a gripping page-turner, perfect for fans of domestic thrillers and mysteries that deliver one jaw-dropping revelation after another. Elisabeth Carpenter expertly blends suspense, drama, and human vulnerability, making this novel an unforgettable read.

The First Husband was an enjoyable, easy read with a medium-paced plot and no spice - which I prefer. I really enjoyed the writing style and how the plot unfolds by combining chapters of current and past events without repetitiveness between the two. The characters were well developed, however, I didn’t feel attached to any particular character and would have liked a better emotional connection with the main character. This being said, the author did do a good job creating dislike for the antagonist. Although the plot was complete, it was somewhat predictable and I would have enjoyed a bigger twist. I would recommend this novel to anyone interested in mystery/thrillers with minimal suspense/plot-twists.

A psychological thriller that kept me guessing until the last page. Elisabeth Carpenter is a new author for me. I will read more of her books.

I am so excited that I was sent this novel from Net Galley!
This was such a thrilling page-turner. I loved the dual timeline of the story that gave such insight to the protagonist’s first marriage and current day festivities.
The primal devotion of a mother struck a chord with me as a mom of 4 myself.
I also loved how each character had a mini plot of their own to add to the plot twists throughout.
Loved this one and I think everyone should go out in February and purchase it!

Leah is about to marry Matt, the BFF of her husband Callum - who disappeared 8 years ago. Or did he? This moves back and forth in time to tell the story of Leah and Callum as well as of Leah and Matt. As unrealistic as it might be that Leah and Matt would choose to be. married at the same cabin where bad things happened, go with it. Carpenter has a smooth writing style that pulls you in and keeps you reading. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

Leah and Matt are due to get married in two days’ time at a cabin belonging to his parents. A strange choice of venue because, eight years ago, Leah’s husband, Callum (who was also Matt’s best friend), went missing from the same place.
Then Leah receives a loving note, signed ‘Callum’, but he was declared dead after going missing. Things start going wrong with the wedding plans so is Callum still alive or is someone pretending to be him?
A great psychological thriller that I highly recommend.

I thought this was a decent read that was definitely creepy at times. It centers on Leah, whose first husband Callum disappeared 8 years ago. She is now marrying his best friend, Matt, who is also a long-time friend of hers. In the days leading up tot the wedding, creepy things start to happen and Leah isn't sure who she can trust. The story jumps back and forth from the current time to when Callum disappeared, with many of the same characters in both narratives.
First off, I thought it was insane and entirely unrealistic that Leah and Matt would choose to get married at the cabin where disaster occurred 8 years ago. I couldn't get past why anyone would have agreed to that. Putting that aside, I liked the dual timeframes and thought that the dynamics between the characters was good; it was hard to know who to trust, and that is how I like it! The back and forth timeline worked, though I didn't think the author spent quite enough time helping the reader understand what Callum was like in the flashback chapters. The ending was extremely abrupt, taking only a few pages, which was a little off-putting after the slow build to get up to it. There were also some questions left unanswered, where it felt like the author was either just trying to create red herrings or leaving the reader to their own devices to connect the dots.
Overall, it was a fun read and I enjoyed trying to solve the mystery along with Leah. There are some things that could have been done differently to increase my enjoyment even more, but I felt like it was a solid 3.5 star read. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Wow! This was crazy tense and gripping from the very start!
Leah's husband, Callum, disappeared eight years ago and in two days time, she is marrying Callum's best friend, Matt. When she receives a note, purportedly from Callum and in his handwriting, Leah understandably panics, as did I! As more sinister things happen, Leah becomes suspicious of everyone and so it is a relief to finally reach her wedding day with everything in place, but just as Leah relaxes, disaster strikes.
The story is told in the present day and through flashbacks leading up to Callum's disappearance. it was very suspenseful and I found myself reading faster ad faster, desperate to know what happened to Callum and who was threatening Leah. A brilliant read!
4 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Elisabeth Carpenter and Bookouture, for an ARC in return for an honest review.

I got this book from Netgallery.
Summary:
“Callum was my first husband. He disappeared eight years ago, leaving only secrets and pain behind. He’s dead. In two days’ time, I’m getting married again. Then a card comes through the letterbox:
Two days to go. I can’t wait to see you. I’ve missed you so much. All my love, Callum”
Conclusion:
I have often read books in which the future and the past are mixed up. This book sometimes confused me by jumping back and forward into time. I mixed up people or backgrounds. Maybe also because a lot of background information is given that does not contribute to the story.
A number of things could have been worked out better, for example:
- The 2 ladies from the catering, there is ultimately 1 small thing that’s explaining something and then it is over. However, I did not find the reason credible.
- The accomplice of the perpetrator is eventually revealed, but how that ends is not described. It is just a statement.
- The last chapter could also have been explained a bit better, it is finished in 3.5 pages and 1.5 page is a repetition of what you read earlier.
I didn’t like that the time counts down to the moment that Callum disappears. When you’re there you skip to after the time he disappeared. So, you still don't know what happened. At the end of the book you go back to before the disappearance, you read the same thing as what you read before and suddenly the story continues.
I found it surprising that the main characters were honest about the threats they received. Normally people keep that to themselves and you get uncomfortable situations. Now they helped each other. That was nice. And at some parts I thought the book became really exciting.
Give the book a chance, you might like it.
Thank you very much for letting me read this book.

Absolutely raced through this book! Full of twists and turns that had me on edge of my seat! Full on terrified of what was going to happen next!

Alright, so this book had me hooked right from the jump! It was my first Elisabeth Carpenter book and let me tell you something… She knows how to spin a story and keep you locked in from the start. I’ll admit, the middle got a little messy and had me like, “Wait, what’s going on?” But don’t worry, by the end, it all makes sense. The plot was good, and I’m all about those wild, crazy-husband vibes. lol So yeah… I enjoyed it!!
