This wasn’t for me unfortunately. I love a weird book with a unique voice, but this was a bit too confusing and I didn’t get on with the writing style. It is very colloquial, with erratic thoughts and strange ways of describing things that are very fresh, but also made me feel very distanced from the characters and plot. Also, there was lots of explicit content written using strange imagery that got kind of lost in the voice or just made me cringe a bit. Definitely intentional to make the point of the book (which becomes clearer towards the end) and very clever, but ultimately not for me.

I did like the premise, and how this criticised of expectations put on young women in relationships, and I also liked the fact a snake had plans to go to the casino, but overall just not my thing. If you love a book that’s very fast-paced, chatty with lots of personality and isn’t like anything you’ve ever read before, then you might want to give this a try. It has so many five star ratings, so there’s a great chance you’ll love it! 😊

Thank you to the publisher for the gifted copy 😊

One of the weirdest books I’ve ever read (complimentary). “Read on, man.”

This book won’t be for everyone. It’s uncensored, unhinged, and unfiltered. It follows Reality, who essentially loses the plot over a mediocre guy who couldn’t care less about her. As she becomes more delirious in her quest to be the perfect girlfriend, the story spirals into full-blown absurdism. But beneath this, there are some really sad undertones - trauma, sexual assault, misogyny, and loneliness.

The writing style is definitely unique (again, complimentary). One moment, it’s colloquial; the next, it’s borderline academic - but it doesn’t feel self-indulgent, just reflective of Reality herself. Her instability makes people underestimate her intellect, but she’s not stupid. I think the contrast is a clever choice. I also love how the author doesn’t try to fit into any boxes - I get the impression they had as much fun writing this as I did reading it.

Unfortunately I had to DNF this book. The writing style was sporadic, overcomplicated and just not to my taste. The idea itself and the themes explored however, were intriguing and well thought out, the execution just wasn’t for me

Paradise Logic follows Reality Kahn who wants to be the best girlfriend of all time but she needs a boyfriend first. She receives advice from Girlfriend weekly, a women’s magazine and meets Ariel at a party. Ariel will become her boyfriend and she will learn to be his perfect girlfriend.

I’m honestly not sure what to rate this. I thought I was the type of reader for this book but I’m just not and I think this is for a very specific type of reader. The writing of this was very robotic (on purpose) but that meant I did struggle to connect to Reality. This was an interesting concept but I can’t say it did much for me or that I truly understood this. It was weird at times and very sexual. I’m not entirely sure what I’m supposed to take away from this but it is very unique and I’ve never read anything like it before. That said I’m giving this 2.5 stars because it’s not a bad book at all but I’m not the audience for it and cannot say I enjoyed it and I’m rounding down to a 2 star. I do think people should give this story a chance though as I think for the right person this will be very entertaining and impactful.

What a weird book, I loved it. The main character is deeply unhinged and completely unreliable, but so likeable. Her point of view is bizarre and I could never work out what was real and what was her fantasy. The writing style was so surreal but incredibly readable and worryingly relatable. The protagonist is stunningly unaware of herself, her surroundings and the people around her. Her entire existence revolves around being the perfect girlfriend to a man who never deserved her. I loved her so much.

I had so much fun reading Kemp’s debut. The story of young Reality, a woman on a mission to become the World’s Best Girlfriend was absolutely nuts, in the best way. The ‘unhinged woman’ genre has become oversaturated recently, but this felt like a truly original take; surrealist, and with emotional beats that pierced through the weirdness and gave the story weight. Can’t wait to see where Kemp goes next!
