I found this to be such an interesting read. This is the first time I have read anything by this author, and I wasn't disappointed. This was a historical fiction novel about Osborn Roche, a photographer, that disappears after losing his wife. This book has themes of society normality, superstition, and secrets coming back to haunt you. Through the writing, you can tell that the author did an amazing amount of research. I thought it was written and plotted well. I didn't realize this was a series, and I am interested in reading more from this author. I definitely recommend this book to history/historical fiction readers.

Sin Eater offers an interesting concept for historical fiction readers. I am a huge 19th century nerd so as soon as I saw the cover, I knew I had to request it.
Osborn Roche, a celebrated photographer, practically disappeared from the face of the earth after losing his wife to childbirth. His new life of solitude introduced him to the role of 'Sin Eaters', a ritual that I was introduced to through this book. Through fate, his and his family's lives seem to be intertwined with that of the Fenn family, professional mourners. Their journeys explore societal norms, superstition and love as secrets from their pasts rear their ugly heads.
I really appreciated the depth of historical research that is evident throughout the whole narrative. The pacing was just right for me. The characters were interesting, and their dynamics kept the plot very engaging.
My understanding is this is a sequel, third installment in the series, and I believe there are references to the previous books. Despite having not read the previous books, I honestly had no problem understanding and connecting with the characters.
Unfortunately, there were several moments, however, when I found myself confused. Especially towards the end, during the big reveal. The reveal itself was interesting, but the execution of it really disconnected me. I'll be sharing more feedback with the publisher.
