You know when you read a book and you sit back and think “surely there is no way that would actually happen”? Enter Pieces if You. I’ve had this one on my TBR for a long time but I decided to pick it up in April.
The story follows loved up soulmates Lucy and Luke. The pair have been trying to have children (trigger warning) and find themselves at their last chance. Just as everything seems to be looking up Luke ends up in a life accident and secrets start to surface.
It took me quite a while to warm up to any of the characters in this book. Lucy harbours a lot of resentment towards her best friend and what she perceived as ease of being able to fall pregnant. Luke’s mum isn’t the nicest person either and there isn’t a great relationship between her and Lucy. There’s also Luke’s sister who’s having an affair with a married man. Quite a lot going on to be honest. When Luke’s accident happens and what follows after is the bit that had me like WTF? I don’t really want to spoil it but if anyone’s read this and remembers what happens did you also think there was no way that would be okay and socially acceptable and something that would actually happen? 😂 maybe it was just me!
This book has low key been on my tbr for years so I'm glad i finally got to it, but am pretty gutted about my feeling on this.
Pieces of you follows Lucy and Luke who have been having trouble with having a baby over the years. When the book starts they're finally in a good place and everything is seeming to come together, but when Luke is in a terrible accident that leaves him in a coma Lucy's world slowly starts to unravel, secrets come to light and Lucy starts to look back at her marriage and realise some it wasn't quite what she though.
What I liked
I really enjoyed Ella Harper's writing even though this was a tough story to read the writing style was super easy to slip in and out of and I was definitely in to the story early on. I also liked the characters, mostly Lucy and Luke their chapters were my favourite ones and I was always eager to get back to Lucy or Lucy and Luke's parts.
What I didn't like
This was probably an average 3 star read at the 90% mark, it hadn't done anything that blew me away it was just a okay read at that point. The ending could have knocked it up a star if it had surprised me it would have went to a 4 but it went another way and that just wasn't for me.
Thank you to netgalley for the e-arc.
Not my usual genre and I could not get as into to it as I normally would. Found this to be a tad repetitive, but I enjoyed how emotional it was.
What an amazing yet emotional read, I was in pieces right at the beginning of this book. This book at the beginning brought back so many memories and our journey to conception.
I could fully relate to all that Lucy and her husband Luke were going through. The emotion in the book was real.
The descriptions of them going through IVF was just spot on.
The emotions of wanting a baby so much, that you will go through anything to get there. Regular scans, Check ups the never ending tests, the exhaustion. The mind changing experiences.
When Luke is involved in an accident, Lucy needs to decide just what it is she really wants from life. There are going to be shocks in store that will suddenly put everyone's lives into perspective.
This was although at times an emotional read, it was enjoyable. I did however find the book a little repetitive as it went on.
That aside, it was a decent read. One to really get your attention.
