Thank you to NetGalley for this e-copy of Why Does Grandpa Walk so Slowly by Yoav Tenembaum in exchange for a honest review..This is a cute family-themed book about a boy and his grandpa and how they explore why he moves so slowly .He visits the snail and turtle and each tell him he must have been them in a former life. This story teaches empathy and acceptance of older people and shows the special love between a grandson and grandfather.

The title, Why Does Grandpa Walk So Slowly?, drew me in and I looked forward to reading this book. However, although the illustrations had a certain charm, the text was disappointing. The answers to the title question were off track.

The story of a grandfather who walks very slowly. In his quest to know why he is so slow, why he walks so slowly, Grandpa asks his friends the turtle and the snail. Their answers are original and surprising.

This is the publisher’s description of this picture book. As much as it pains me to say this, the turtle’s and snail’s answers are surprising only in the sense that they’re ridiculous. This picture book had the potential to gently instruct children on how their elders eventually slow, but instead it was just silly. Better options would be Grandpa's Window by Laura Gehl or Alte Zachen / Old Things by Ziggy Hanaor.

Author Yoav J. Tenembaum is a lecturer in International Relations at Tel Aviv University. I advise he not quit his day job.

In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley and Troubadour in exchange for an honest review.

Why Does Grandpa Walk So Slowly? We do not really get this question answered, but we do get some creative reasons why this may be. To my 4yo who has a grandfather who walks slowly, this did not satisfy her curiosity.

A nice poetic picture book about a loving and accepting relationship between grandfather and grandson.

The illustrations are warm watercolors. For my personal taste the layout and font could have been picked wiser so that the text would integrate better with the illustrations.

Why Does Grandpa Walk So Slowly? by Yoav J. Tenembaum is a lovely picture book that embraces the close relationship between a grandfather and his young grandchild.

Four year old Noam wonders why Grandpa always walks so slowly. Seeking to answer the child at an age appropriate level, Grandpa seeks the wisdom of Turtle and Snail who each give him an explanation that no one was expecting. Enhanced by beautiful illustrations, this multi-generational tale will be enjoyed by all age groups.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Troubador for an ARC.

I liked the idea behind the story for this book but it wasn't really one for me, the concept had promise and it could have been used to highlight that the Grandpa was elderly, etc. not (spoiler alert) that he used to be a snail or turtle in a previous life).

It written well but I didn't like the story itself and my daughter was not a fan of the book either, she didn't want to finish it but we did so we had read the whole book but she was honest and said she didn't like it so its a miss in our house. I asked her about the illustrations and she did like them but that was all - she didn't like Noam, didn't like his name and thought what he said was silly and not in a funny way. She reads an awful lot and is not usually so critical.

This is purely personal preference and I would still encourage others to give the book a read as they may think differently to my daughter and I. It is 2 stars from me for this one, the book has some nice illustrations.
