Another fast paced thriller from Daniel Hurst that had me rushing through to find what happened next. Not as many twists as some of his books, but still a fun read. Lots of unlikeable characters making bad decisions all leading to a series of tense moments. For any one married, this may have you asking how well do you know your spouse! Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the advanced reader copy in exchange for a review. (3.5 stars)

This book is another winner by Hurst! He has that easy writing style that makes you want to keep on reading! A seemingly perfect marriage that holds horrible secrets! The husband is not what he first appears to be. We learn early on about his past, and then we are carried through some frightening moments. Is anyone safe? Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC.

I was so excited to read this book, I wish I could say that I loved it but I didn't, it was an OK read, I felt it lacked depth and character development. I would still recommend this book and I'm glad I read it.

First of all, thanks so much to the publishers and Netgalley for this ARC, which I appreciate is in EPUB format.
Narrated by the perspectives of the killer, Lachlan, and his obvious to his past wife, Jenny, this book presents us with how a devoted family man confesses to us his killing vice, one he has under control until a documentary on his first ever murder when he was a teenager entices his whole family for a visit to his natal town where it happened. From that moment on, you can feel his anxiety through how well-written this book is and Jenny's concerns and suspicions about him. It may be a bit dense sometimes, but it is a good read with an ending that will not let you indifferent.

Jenny has a suspicion that her husband may be connected to a murder.
A thriller told from two perspectives that was slow at the start but had some twist and turns.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

Sometimes knowing the identity of the killer at the beginning of the story dulls the rest of the plot, but in this case, it heightens the suspense! I loved this story and raced through it in one afternoon. Fans of psychological thrillers will be so happy with this one!

3.5/5, rounded up to 4.

A domestic suspense drama that was pretty easy to predict, with the exception of the very last part. I’ve enjoyed several of Hurst’s books, including the doctor’s wife series. I couldn’t get into this one at first, but gave it another try and am glad that I did. Overall, time well spent and an enjoyable read. I would recommend it.

Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the advance copy. All opinions are my own.

As always with a Daniel Hurst novel you're treated to a fast paced domestic thriller with some great and not so great characters.
In this latest offering we meet Jenny and Lachlan, married 20 years with 2 teenage children. Jenny thinks the only thing she has to worry about is her daughter Bonnie leaving for University, however she's unaware that Lachlan has a secret past.
Told from the perspective of both Jenny and Lachlan in alternate chapters it's unusual to discover Lachlans secret from the outset but as his past catches up with him it's fascinating to see how he attempts to manipulate his family.
Another brilliant read

How well do you know your spouse? How much did you know about his or her past before marrying them?

In what I consider Daniel Hurst’s best book to date, this is a question that bears thinking. What if after many years of being married you begin seeing cracks in your spouse’s behavior?

This book is a must read for fans of Daniel Hurst. It’s a fantastic thriller with many heart pounding moments. I highly recommend this book.

My thanks to Netgalley for this arc.

A book by this author equals a good book for me. I have never read one of his books I did not enjoy and what I like very much about them is the fact when you think that everything has been unraveled, the author still has a surprise waiting.

I loved diving into the both Jenny's and Lachlan's heads, wading through their thoughts and the author allowed both main characters to take turns and tell their part of the story.

The killer was so proud, being able to hide all their secrets for many years, but it seems like they are going down. And that means they have to take immediate action...

Once you start thinking you are invincible, you have made your first mistake.

I had a fun time devouring this book. Looking forward to the next one. 5 stars

Thank you

Another brilliant book from one of my favourite authors who never disappoints me. A great page turner that kept me on the edge of my seat from the very first page until the great ending that I never guessed.

All the characters were excellent with just brilliant storytelling.

Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC which I can thoroughly recommend.

Jenny and Lachlan have been married for over twenty years and share two teenagers. Life is great until their teenage daughter becomes obsessed with a true-crime documentary of a cold case that all of her friends are talking about. When Jenny settles in to watch, she realizes it happened in the small Scottish village her husband grew up in.

While Jenny is an open book when it comes to her background and family, Lachlan is very tight-lipped, and for good reason.

Told in alternating points of view, the reader is privy to all of Lachlan's secrets immediately. There is no 'guessing' if he did or didn't, and if you think you wouldn't like a thriller where the bad guy is outed right away, give this one a chance. Watching Lachlan manipulate his family and co-workers made the tension unbearable, and seeing his inflated ego and grandiose thoughts made him such an unlikable character.

Jenny is just as manipulative as her husband, and she tricks him into going to his childhood village on a holiday. When he encounters some of the very people he's tried hard to distance himself from, including the man everyone pointed the finger blame at, it was so fun watching Lachlan squirm. Does he truly have what it takes to outmaneuver a suspicious wife?

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Bookouture for this early read. At the time this review was written, this title was expected to publish on January 20, 2025.

Jenny and Lachlan are just a normal married couple with two kids, Bonnie and William. They’ve been married for 20 years, they live together where Jenny grew up. That is until we find out Lachlan has a secret… he murdered a girl when he was 15 and now his family are obsessed with a documentary about it and want to go back to the town in Scotland where he grew up, how will he keep this secret safe from them?

My 23rd book by Daniel so it’s safe to say I’m a fan of his writing! I was so excited to be accepted for this ARC as I couldn’t wait until January! This is a dual POV, from Jenny and Lachlan with an insert of Lachlans childhood. I couldn’t put this down, I love how Daniel keeps you wondering what’s going to happen next, plenty of jaw dropping moments, with little twists and turns along the way! Fast paced read with good character depth, and nice short chapters which is always a winner for me.

Here’s hoping The Baby Swap goes on to NetGalley soon 🤞🏼

I can never stop myself from reading a Daniel Hurst thriller and I know I am in for a good time. This one was no exception. I didn't read the synopsis on purpose so I went in fully blind and that is the best way to go into reading this one in my opinion. I read this one in less than a day and the epilogue had a twist I did not expect. I did predict some elements of the story, but that did not diminish my enjoyment of the pace and the characters. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

The Husband by Daniel Hurst was a good psychological drama with a predictable plot. Lachlan and Jenny seemed emotionally detached. The slower pace of the story lacked depth and suspense. However, it did picked up in the final pages. Not a favorite book from Mr Hurst but an entertraining read.

Thank you to the author, Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.

I have heard a lot about Daniel Hurst’s books from a Psychological Thriller Readers Facebook group, so I was really excited when I opened my emails and saw that I had been chosen to read The Husband. Thank you for the opportunity!

The story revolves around Lachlan, his wife Jenny, and their two teenage children, Bonnie and William. It all begins with a murder mystery documentary that captures the attention of people worldwide, including Jenny and Bonnie. While everyone is glued to the screen, Lachlan does his best to avoid it, acting increasingly suspicious—which does not go unnoticed by Jenny. As events start to unfold, Jenny becomes determined to get answers, piecing everything together bit by bit.

The short, cliffhanger chapters made the book incredibly hard to put down, and the pacing was perfect for building suspense. The straightforward, accessible writing draws you in while keeping the twists sharp and effective.

As my first experience with Daniel Hurst, I found his ability to evoke unease and tension impressive. That said, some of the twists felt a little predictable toward the end, but they were still satisfying in the broader context of the story.

Overall, The Husband is a fantastic introduction to Hurst’s work. It’s a page-turner filled with lies, secrets, and the lengths people go to protect—or destroy—those they love. If you’re a fan of domestic thrillers, this book is well worth the read!
