Amazing book. Very informative and gives good insight.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book.

Tremper Longman brings the scale of Genesis down to a more manageable size without minimizing the grand narrative of this book. I learned more about reading Genesis in light of ancient texts than I've ever understood before without it being too technical or over my head as well as an understanding of the whole Abraham, Sarah situation as his wife/sister/and what all that meant back in that time. Very detailed and very interesting to see how Tremper has narrowed the scope for our understanding. I liked seeing the end part, which explained how he treats Genesis, Listen to the Story, Explain the Story, Live the Story. It reminds me of Ask, Seek, Knock, which is extremely helpful when approaching any book of scripture. I really loved his personal notes on the commentaries he listed as resources at the end in his notes section too. I wish more scholars would do this, in my humble opinion. Overall, I didn't realize this was an updated version of a book previously released, but now I am more than excited to see the other books in the series, especially Proverbs, and will be adding them to my personal library.
*I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. This review is my own opinion*

I highly recommend this. Though I have read many apologetics and books on Christianity, this is the first for me as far as truly trying to put context into the Lord's words. I think the author was highly successful in sharing his view in the origin of Genesis, and how to read it!

How to read Genesis is a wonderful Bible study lesson. I've read Genesis many times but I have never studied it. Honestly, I've read it so many times that I feel I know the book so well and sometimes get a little bored with it.
This bible study gave me alot of insight and taught me a new way to approach Genesis in a way that makes it more interesting. Highly recommend for bible study.

This is such a great introductory book to Genesis. A book that I wish I'd read earlier on! It covers a great breadth of topics in an easy to read and helpful manner.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of Genesis and its nuances, helping the reader to grasp the cultural and historical context. Great book for drawing your attention to things we might otherwise miss.

As a layperson with a lot of Bible knowledge, and as a Bible Study teacher for my church, I find this book immensely helpful! I highly encourage anyone who is interested in studying the Bible to pick this book up and read at least some of it. While it is not possible to support every church tradition with one book, I am confident that all denominations would benefit from the ability to think from many angles and gain a deeper understanding of Genesis.
This edition is an updated version from a previously published book of the same title.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC.

An informative book that is useful for anyone looking to explore Genesis in more depth. This book is easy to read and understand, which speaks to the knowledgeable author behind its creation.

Great reissue of a fantastic book! Longman classic. Would love to see a little bit more updating on content.

This is not a light read but more suited to seminary students and pastors I think. Careful reading will pay dividends with an emphasis on the need to re-evaluate the Genesis passages in light of their original context and meanings to the original audience. A worthy addition to the Genesis library already available.

This was an ok how to guide to help you start reading the Bible. I am looking for a little more out of my bible resources for my study. I do thi k this could help someone just starting to get a little more information.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the e-ARC. This is a readable, wise, practical and really helpful guide to Genesis.

Tremper Longman's "How to Read Genesis" is a valuable resource for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the book of Genesis. Longman offers a clear and insightful guide that navigates the complexities of Genesis.
The book challenges readers to think critically and wrestle with the profound questions raised by Genesis, encouraging deeper engagement with the text. "How to Read Genesis" is a rewarding read that will enrich your understanding of Genesis.

This is not a light book by any stretch however it does get across its meaning in simple and understandable English. The book spends time situating the reader in life of the time that Genesis was thought to be written. The words may well be the breath of God that the author acknowledges that it takes a certain amount of knowledge and understanding to really get to grips with the text. Whilst knowing exactly when the first five books of the Bible were written may will never be known for certain positioning Genesis within the theologies of the ancient Near East really helps with the understanding. There are two creation stories within Genesis The creation from nothing alongside the garden of Eden. The author explores these in context as well as unpicking a little where the idea of the fall from Eden may have come from. This is absolutely fascinating to read as a text of general knowledge and extra special for Christians looking to go deeper into the first book of the Bible..
