I really enjoyed this book. This is the first time I have read anything by Helen Rolfe, and I was not disappointed. She did an excellent job with the characters and story line. I also loved her writing style because it flowed so well. I can't wait to read more from this author. I definitely recommend this one to other readers.
Thank you Net Galley ARC, Boldwood Books and Helen Rolfe
Nadia is a key member of the ground staff at the air ambulance base at Whistlestop River, a former nurse, always calm and in control – although the presence of Hudson, their family liaison officer, can make her a little hot under the collar, while knowing that his complicated family life puts him firmly off limits. But when abandoned baby Lena – obviously well cared for, in a cardboard box and with a note bearing her name – is found outside the doors of the base on a very cold night, it brings back particularly painful memories. And while struggling with all the feelings that have been rekindled, her secret past begins to catch up with her in the most unexpected way – with the possibility that she has a closer connection to the foundling that anyone realises.
There’s a lot of heartache and raw emotion in this book – Nadia’s situation repeatedly had me in tears, and I so wanted everything to work out well in her life. And Hudson proves to be her rock through it all – while problems with his difficult ex-wife and a teenage son who’s going off the rails mean he also has a great deal to cope with in his own life (and he does it SO well – what a lovely man!). But there are plenty of lighter moments too, of camaraderie and banter among the crews, fundraising events and celebrations.
Yes, there’s a tentative romance, perfectly handled and very real – but there’s also a great deal of well-written drama as Nadia’s scenario unfolds and also through the day-to-day situations encountered by the air ambulance crew. The author’s research, and the way she uses it to bring both the quiet and dramatic moments vividly to life, is really excellent – when I finished this book, I felt like I’d spent time on the Whistlestop River base, and had a real understanding (and admiration) for the situations they handled so efficiently and in such a matter-of-fact way. The friendships between the team members constantly warm the heart – and although some of them have continuing stories, and I’d missed some of the background, there was enough gentle catching up with anything I really needed to know.
Such a lovely read, and this is a series I’d thoroughly recommend if you enjoy the same books that I do – I’m just really looking forward to the next book in the series.
A beautiful story about two friends. They also happen to be co-workers.
Main characters, Nadia and Hudson, have had some difficult times in their past.
Can they go forward and heal past hurts?
I think this would be a fun series to read. This is my first book in the series and I hope to catch up with the other books soon.
Thank you NetGalley, Boldwood Books and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
I loved and thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
The story is set at Whistlestop River Air Ambulance and is mainly about Nadia and Hudson. Nadia loves her job and after what happened in her past, is settled in her life. But, that changes when someone from her past visits her and she then has to relive what happened years ago.
On the other hand, Hudson is trying to balance his personal and work life and to be there for his children after his divorce.
They’re good friends, but, do they both feel more for each other?
The characters were relatable and i liked how friendly they were to each other.
There was some happy and sad moments, a well written story.
I highly recommend this book.
I love all Helen’s books and this third in the Skylarks series is fabulous. The Air ambulance crew set in Dorset are hard working people each with their own stories.
Nadia is an administrator who lives alone but plays a huge part in what she believes is her family on the base. Secrets about her past that she had kept private begin to unravel as a Sister she hasn’t seen for decades goes missing. As this remarkable story unfolds her life is transformed with new beginnings.
This is our third visit to Whistlestop River, and I already feel at home with the various characters and have taken most of them to my heart. This time, the focus was on two of the support staff who provide their services on the ground. They liaise with any victim’s families and the police and medical staff.
Nadia has always been a natural mother figure among the team, and her maternal instincts are tested in this truly heartbreaking book. Discovering an abandoned baby leads to a tsunami of emotions from the loving support worker whose love for everyone has been the backbone of the airbase. As the truth about Nadia’s past is gradually revealed, it becomes clear that she is hiding unresolved heartache and a dark and painful past. The depths of Nadia’s pain are explored through the introduction of a couple of additional characters whose presence will challenge everything that her colleagues know and believe about her.
Whilst reading I couldn’t fail to marvel at Helen Rolfe’s ability to write stories that are both heartfelt and raw. She manages to incorporate real drama and believable pain into the mix to create relatable stories that are both authentic and achingly heartrending.
Hudson is the father figure to Nadia’s role as the base mother and it’s his level headedness that draws people to trust him. Despite his seemingly calm demeanour, his personal life has been rocked by an ex-wife who seems to court the affections of men who are wholly unsuitable and that is a major worry for Hudson. A worry because he has no way of knowing who may be spending time with his son. I really admire Hudson and wish that more people would embrace his parenting skills. He’s not perfect, but he really wants to make a difference.
As the synopsis reveals, there’s a growing connection between Nadia and Hudson but with such complicated lives, it would be impossible to explore a shared future.
I can’t choose a favourite character from this series, but I love the friendship and trust that Nadia and Hudson share. Perhaps, that’s enough for them both.
I read this book in the run-up to New Year’s Eve, and it was definitely a positive start to 2025 for me.
The story follows Nadia, a former nurse now working on the operational side of the service, and Hudson, a patient family advocate navigating his role as a social worker. Both are burdened by personal family issues they’ve kept hidden but find themselves opening up to one another as their connection deepens. Nadia is stirred emotionally when an abandoned baby is discovered, while Hudson struggles with the challenges of his ex-wife and their children, particularly his eldest son’s behavior.
The book masterfully balances medical drama, emotional depth, and romance. Nadia and Hudson’s journey is touching, with their pasts threatening to impact their future. Additionally, Nadia’s storyline with Monica adds an extra layer of emotional intensity. The fast-paced plot, relatable characters, and insights into the air ambulance world make this a captivating read, with just the right mix of drama and romance. Fans of the series and newcomers alike will enjoy this installment.
Thank you so much to @rachelsrandomresources for inviting us onto this book tour.
This is the third book in the skylarks series by @helenrolfe I have read the previous two and loved those two but it can be read as a standalone too.
Nadia is having feelings for Hudson who she works with only problem being she thinks he's still married as he doesn't like to talk about his private life but actually he is very happily divorced.
After discovering a newborn baby on the doorstep of the air ambulance base nadia has to face some horrible facts about her past involving her sister and some babies that she sadly lost. And with the arrival of archie her world looks like it's about to spin on its axis.
Can she and her sister rebuild their relationship and can her and Hudson move their friendship on.
I loved hearing about old and new residents in this small town. I was rooting for nadia and Hudson from the start and after hearing about her sister I wasn't sure how nadia would react to Monica and all the things that have happened in the past. I'm hoping for more from this series in the future.
In this the third book in the series the story concentrates on Nadia and Hudson. They both have secrets which come to the fore when a baby is abandoned on the doorstep of the air ambulance base.
It isn't essential to read the first two books in the series, however I can recommend those as well. I especially enjoyed this book in the series, with some very emotional moments as their secrets are gradually revealed. As normal the activities of the air ambulance form the background to the story, with those highs and lows. As the secrets are gradually revealed they have to come to terms with their pasts and have hope for their future.
I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.
“ Something in the Air” by Helen Rolfe book 3 in the Skylark series. What can I say other than I loved it and read in one day. The setting of Whistlestop River, in Dorset sounds perfect, and I could picture the fields and the breathtaking coastline each time the emt helicopter took to the skies It had everything you could want in a story family, friendship, community and love. This time we are following Nadia and Hudson’s journey
I found the characters to be well developed, and multi-dimensional. It’s a great follow up to book two Written in the Stars, and I can’t wait to pick up the authors next book!
I will definitely read other books by this author.
I requested and received an advance reader copy of this book from Boldwood Books and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
An uplifting novel about family, love, forgiveness, and second chances. Nadia’s past might catch her up without notice and change her life forever. Hudson’s failed marriage keeps him struggling with his kids, his ex-wife and parenting. Can Nadia and Hudson help each other and find their own happiness? Thanks to NetGalley for providing an ARC copy. This is my honest review.
Nadia loves her job in the Whistlestop River air ambulance the team are her family. When an abandoned baby is left on the doorstep Nadia begins to feel the things she’s long buried. Then an unexpected visitor from her past pushes her to look into her life before the ambulance became her way of life.
Hudson is also trying to erase his past whilst not allowing anyone to know the events which have lead to his new future.
With the arrival of the baby both Nadia and Hudson have to face an uncertain future.
Brilliant to catch up with the gang again fantastic read as always from Helen Rolfe and looking forward to the next visit with the crew.
I loved this return to the Skylarks! As always with a series it's like returning to old friends that you haven't seen for a while and it being like you only saw them 5 minutes ago - loved it and hope there are more books to follow in this series.
Thank you NetGalley for giving me the chance to read this book ahead of time in exchange for a review. It didn't disappoint! Must read!!
Finished in two days. Absolutely brilliant. It has bestseller written all over it.
This is the latest book in the Skylarks Series and just like the previous book this covers many different topics. Based at the Whistlestop River Air Ambulance this story focuses on Nadia and Hudson. Nadia is settled and has left her past behind her but circumstances mean that she has to face events from her life before. Hudson is juggling life and work after his divorce and trying his best to meet the needs of his children. Both Nadia and Hudson are really good friends but could they have feelings for each other that go beyond friendship? I really like how Helen Rolfe makes the characters so believable and likeable. It is easy to work out who is who and how they are all connected. An enjoyable read that has some heartwarming and some heartbreaking moments. I’m looking forward to reading the next one. Thanks to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the ARC
This is the 3rd book in the Skylarks series, focused on a small town air ambulance service. Each of the stories can be standalone, characters we’ve met in prior books are present but not the main characters.
This book is about Nadia and Hudson. Nadia is a former nurse who now works the operational side of the service. Hudson is a patient family advocate, a social worker of sorts. Both of them have had family issues they’ve kept private, but during the book, things come up that mean entrusting each other with their past.
I liked watching their relationship develop, and the Nadia/Monica storyline was emotional in itself. I don’t write spoilers so won’t go further on either. If you’ve enjoyed other books in this series, this is a must read.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
I just loved this book so much so that when I started reading it I couldn’t put it down. It’s such a good series off books and I just love them all. There are such good characters in this book a well.
I would highly recommend reading this book as they are so heartwarming with a great story and amazing characters.
I would like to thank Boldwood Books and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book early.
This is book three in this series and another good one.
It moves fairly quickly, I almost read it in one day.
It does deal with some life issues in a very good way.
Definitely recommend
In Something in the Air a abandoned baby is found and it brings up past feels for Nadia. While Noah is struggling with his ex wife and young kids behaviour especially his eldest son. Nadia and Noah are a match made in heaven but will there past destroy their future. I love anything medical and reading about the air ambulance is extra exciting! The characters develop further in this book and we get to see a different side to them. They all have the same goal in mind and that is to do the best for their patients. The plot has enough drama and excitement for any reader and with a little bit of romance it could almost be a tv soap show. I am so in love with this book and the series and I am always looking forward to reading more about The Skylarks.
This is the third instalment in the skylark series but could be read as a standalone although I highly recommend starting the series from the beginning for full enjoyment. This book focused on the stories of the characters of Nadia and Hudson.
This storyline again like others in the series covers hard hitting and relatable issues in a sensitive way and seeks to highlight the importance of the work that the air ambulance do.
Look forward to reading more in the series
