The historical setting of medieval Italy was atmospheric and depicted beautifully. The book highlighted the topics of the period, and political and religious plots were prevalent. The MMC was struggling with his faith, noble birth, and the city's widespread corruption, making him a believable character. The myriad of characters reads like epic historical fiction that combines to create a dynamic and engaging narrative.
While the narrative is very descriptive, it drags in places where world-building and over colorful prose shadows plot progression. I dredged through lengthy passages to get to key actions or emotional moments. While its prose occasionally borders on overwrought, it's a rewarding read and a journey worth taking.
