As someone who works in a different but somewhat similar (perceived to be dull) profession, I was intrigued by the subtitle of How to Become an Accountant: The eccentric world of accountancy practices and how I found myself there and its categorization under “humor & satire.” Unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. While the book may have been relying on British humor, which I sometimes struggle to fully appreciate, it mostly felt like it blurred the line between a mundane memoir and a “how-to” guide that lacked the detail to be genuinely practical.
The memoir elements didn’t deliver the depth or insight I’ve come to expect from the genre, and the humor I was hoping for never quite landed. The result was a meandering narrative that felt neither particularly funny nor useful. Perhaps others will connect with its style or find it more relatable, but it didn’t work for me. I could see it maybe being of interest to a British high school student who is considering accounting as a profession.
I would like to thank NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
