This is the story of the largely forgotten Monmouth rebellion and the Bloody Assizes that followed. Those who had risen against the King were brought to justice and the book is a further outing for Lady Jane Harrier. It works very well as a standalone. Minette Walters has morphed from an author of outstanding crime thrillers into a brilliant historical fiction author. She has an eye for detail and there’s a real sense of time, place and people. I’ve read the book and this audio version is exceptional. I was once again immersed in the story, invested in the tension and found Emma Gregory’s narration absolutely spot on.
