There is something I quite enjoy about a villain being a villain for the sake of it. They have no redemption arc and are only in it for themselves. Never in a million years did I expect this book to play out and end like it did. I was genuinely shocked with how this one came to be, and I loved it!
Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC.
Well this book took me on a ride (pun intended)! I thought I knew what I was getting into from the description of the book, but it surprised me in the best ways. I liked the double timeline and plot twists, but my favourite part was Brooke, the main character. I felt sorry for her terror, but at the same time appaled by het attitude and terror. Perfect when you want a fast paced thriller!
4.5 stars
This is hands down the best thriller I have read in SO LONG. the dual timeline of before and now and watching the tension build was amazing. I started reading this on the treadmill to up my steps…I finished the book on the treadmill… I am both physically knackered and mentally BUZZED! 🤣 I just couldn’t stop!
This took me on a ride!
The dual timeline had me on the edge of my seat. The suspense was so real in this story. One thing I like in a thriller is when they get to the point and this one did just that. It was super fast paced!
I went into this without thinking too deeply about the plot holes, like please take me on this ridiculous journey. The last 20% of the book was so unhinged! I just love a psychotic character.
Brooke is determined to put the past behind her and focus on getting into Yale, snagging the boy of her dreams, and not letting down her family. After the death of one of her classmates at a lake house party she threw last year, she's been haunted by an unknown caller who claims she was responsible for what happened. Now, as she finishes out her senior year, her stalker is taking it to the next level, and as Brooke is tailed by a van on a remote country road, she starts to wonder if they actually want to see her dead. Megan Lally's second novel, No Place Left To Hide, is a superior YA thriller with a fun atmosphere and good plotting. One solid twist occurs long enough before the end of the book that Lally has time to deal with the fallout (I struggle with thrillers that throw in too many twists for the sake of it, and especially those that want to deliver a 'shocking' ending that ends up being silly). I finished it, however, feeling a bit frustrated, because I was still rooting for characters I was obviously not supposed to like. Nobody really comes off well in this book, but some characters get punished far more than others. I guess another way of putting this is that I didn't find the twist completely believable. I wonder if Lally should have turned it up a notch and made everybody really hateable, avoiding that hint of moral judgment. Nevertheless, I think this will appeal to both YA and thriller fans.
