I know someone who fell for a Romance scam. Here is the thing, she is a very intelligent woman!
Still, when it comes to matters of the heart, these things can happen, especially when we do not know what to look for. And that is where ‘How to beat scammers’ comes into the picture.

It is a very interesting read, and oh, so needed in this day and age.

From the well-known ‘Hi Mum’ scam to the Romance scams, this author walks us through some of the more used scams. You get to know some ‘tells’, like in poker, so you can catch the scammer early in the act so to speak, and hopefully not lose those heard earned money of yours.😉

Right down to some surprising testimonials from some that do scams on a daily basis.

Oh, do be careful, my lovelies.😘

And now that we have AI in the picture, and what we can do with it develops, what is next?

I have not had that many occurances in my life, I do not really count the emails from a certain newly elected president. I do get emails with fake invoices from Denmark as my last name is Danish, not the tasty kind.😉

Someone hacked my niece's FB account around the time I signed up to review this. They are getting too good. As in… before, you could eaily see because of the language. However, this time, they used and knew how to spell words that I know my niece can not spell correctly. *phew* Mum called at the same time to let me know. My mum is the best.😘

The sort of book that everyone should read. It is, at times, fascinating, intriguing and quite frankly terrifying because the lengths scammers will go to and their ingenuity is quite incredible. This book covers a really wide range of scams and the plausibility of many of them is absolutely chilling. You could be forgiven for thinking you’d have to be a bit daft or overly trusting to fall for a scam but this is enlightening and shows what pretty much anyone could fall victim. Having been a victim of a scam recently myself I was particularly interested in the subject it also was a good reminder that once you’ve been a victim of a scam you’re even more likely to be targeted again as you’ll likely be added to a suckers list which will be passed round or sold in the scamming world.
The book is broken down into categories which makes it flow really well, with sign to look out for written into each section. It definitely left me feeling more informed and forearmed against falling victim to these ruses. I was left with a strange feeling of awe at the ingenuity of some of the scammers. If only they’d put their inventiveness energies into something worthwhile hey.
A few formatting issues in the advance reader copy I received, letters fi and ff and th in those combinations were omitted leading to some confusing results. Once I’d cracked the ‘code’ however it was easy enough to get around and actually quite fun.

I am a fan of Scam Interceptors, so when I learned that Nick Stapleton had written a book I was super excited. I was lucky to get an advanced copy from NetGalley and I was not disappointed! I have always been interested in fraud, and even deal with fraud in my job at times, and this book was really insightful. It is separated into different sections such as how to spot scams, how to beat scammers, and how to talk about scams. Nick gives a good insight into different scams (some I wasn't aware of) and how to recognise the telling signs that it could be a scam. One of my favourite aspects of the book was having testimonies from scammers about how they got into it, and why they scam people. It really made me think differently about the people who carry out these scams - more often than not, they are coerced into these scams, and face threats to their lives or those they love if they don't comply. I would definitely recommend this book.

This is an easy to read guide to scams and how to avoid falling for them, written by a well respected consumer journalist. Although I knew most of the information in the book, being an avid reader of articles on consumer protection, there were some helpful tips which I hadn't thought of. For the readers who aren't so interested generally in consumer issues, it's a must read. He makes the point well that anyone can fall for a scam if caught on the wrong day; it's not just the 'elderly' or 'stupid'. I found the section on why workers in call centres abroad might feel they have no other choice but to take a job trying to scam people very thought provoking. Also interesting were the pieces on how far back scams originate, and that the 'Nigerian prince' scam actually goes back to an earlier 'Spanish nobleman' scam!
