This is an epic fantasy about a mortal who is forced into an arranged marriage with the fae king. While searching for a way to peace in their kingdoms, she learns about herself and the world she’s been sheltered from her whole life. This high fantasy novel is the first of a series and is a beautifully written epic journey. Hard to put down and left me anxious for more.

I thought the overall plot to this story was good, but I don’t like the way it was written. This book was 3rd person, which I’m okay with, but I feel like there were way too many characters with similar names and it was hard to follow all the different thoughts of each character. I feel like this could have been a slow burn but all the FMC and MMC did was kiss, and I was at 96% before that happened. I was disappointed that the main characters didn’t seem to actually give the marriage a chance, they never got to know one another or try to find attraction/understanding with each other.

This book is absolutely fantastic, the world building and the magic are incredibly described, and the lore is magnificent. The author was able to transport me into this magical world, where nature is an integral part of the fae and it’s symbiotic to their being and magic. That’s probably my favourite part of the book, along with all the creatures, myths and legends described. I absolutely love how our FMC processes the discovery of the lies have been fed to her since she was a child, highlighted in the book by sentences said by others and remembered by her. I feel it was a really clever way to show the internal turmoil that build our FMC’s character . If you’re expecting a fantasy romance though, you will not find it here. The romance was a heavy sub plot, of course it’s mentioned because of the plot of the story but I’d say is 0.1% of the events that happen. I found these aspect the weakest of the book, because I was expecting something different from reading the blurb (passion,fae romance). I wouldn’t say it’s a slow burn, because there is no “burn” at all. The relationship between our FMC and MMC it’s interesting, but they basically avoided each other for the whole book, so their relationship is kind of put in second place. The one building and lore though eclipse the lack of romantic tension and make me really look forward to the next book. I really recommend it to all fantasy lovers that love are very well though out magical world.

I couldn’t finish this book. I just couldn’t get into it at all. Which is a shame because the synopsis sounds absolutely amazing! For some reason I just couldn’t connect and it wasn’t grabbing my attention.

From what I did read, it is well written and very descriptive. Thank you NetGalley and publisher for allowing me to read this book before the publication day and I hope it does really well.

While an excellent premise, the execution was a disappointment for me.

Aisling is the mortal queen (not that you could miss it since the author uses the phrase no less than 333 times), and her people have been at war with the fae for centuries. A tentative peace is forged by her marriage to the fae king, Lir, and she sets off to live among her people’s ancient enemy.

See? A solid premise, and a different approach to the human girl/fae king trope. Unfortunately, I couldn’t care at all because I was too distracted by the writing. First, it’s endlessly repetitive. Once a word or phrase is introduced, you can be sure it will resurface again and again. Plus, we are treated to word-for-word repeats of flashback quotes spoken to the FMC a dozen times.

There is also an odd habit of rattling off long lists of names or items. On several occasions, four or five character names were listed in multiple sentences within the same paragraph. Probably my biggest gripe, though, is the frequent misuse of words, sometimes causing the meaning of a sentence to be reversed.

The book reads like it’s been translated to English from another language, badly, by a computer program. I’m certainly not saying that’s what happened, but if English is the author’s first language, they demonstrate a disregard for the rules of basic sentence structure and the definitions of words that is frankly shocking in a writer.

Underdeveloped characters, a nonexistent romance, and uneven pacing rounded out the experience. It’s a shame, because the author had a unique and interesting idea, and perhaps if less effort had been spent on the attempt to create flowery language, it could have been great.

I loved this so much! The writing was beautiful and the story itself was super interesting. Metzler did a great job with the world-building and I felt like it was very easy to find myself imagining the world Aisling was working through. The slow burn was perfection and I also really loved that there was no spice as well. I never felt like the characters just woke up one day and were in love, it really felt like I could see their relationship blooming, which made it even more satisfying when they finally found each other on the same page. The Scottish/Celtic vibes were something new to me and I really loved discovering the world through that lens. Very excited for the next book! The witty banter between the characters is a highlight, with memorable lines like "In that case, how unfortunate for both our races that it is I who is married to Lir and not yourself" and "You shouldn't claim to wait upon that which you dread" adding depth and personality to the narrative.

While some reviews have noted the frequent repetition of the phrase "The Mortal Queen," I personally did not find it distracting. Given the title of the book and the third-person narrative, the phrase is to be expected. Moreover, I was impressed by the author's ability to maintain varied and engaging introductions for each chapter and scene.

"The Mortal Queen" is a must-read for fantasy lovers. Metzler's talent is undeniable, and I eagerly anticipate diving into "The Savage Queen" to continue this enthralling journey.

The book is well written and reminds me of Tolkien. The mortal queen follows Aisling who is forced to marry the fae king in order to secure a peace treaty between their peoples. A really good plot with a few twists. The pacing was a little slow to start with but did pick up.

When I say this is a slowwwww burn I mean it is slow! Aisling’s character development was amazing and I would have wished to see a little abit more insight into the MMC, Lir. I hope the next book can really dive more into their romance and his character.

The Mortal Queen follows the story of Aisling , who is forced by her family and clan to marry the Aos si (Fae) king of the forest in order to secure a peace treaty between their peoples. All her life Aisling has been sheltered and indoctrinated with the atrocities of the Fae and a skewed version of her world's history. But when she gets to the Fae kingdom of Annwyn she soon realizes that the version of events fed to her by her people is highly exaggerated in their favor and if she hopes to withstand the hate and derision of her new Fae subjects then she should consider their and their King's perspective.

This was a really interesting read for me, the world building was crafted nicely with rich descriptions and political intrigue. The main character Aisling was also compelling, she had a love and duty for her people despite their regard towards her and I appreciated the fact that she seemed to question and think through her decisions. The side characters and their individual stories also enriched the story and gave the reader an idea of how the war affected each side.

The only thing that I felt lacked was the romance. The book is heavily plot driven with more monologue than dialogue and the romance was extremely scarce, I also didn't connect much with the main male character maybe because the book was told from Aisling's Pov or that he had limited page time but I wanted to know what he was thinking during certain scenes just so that his character would develop more besides just being a 'powerful Fae king'. But overall this was an intriguing fantasy book and I look forward to the rest of the series.

I will say the quick shifts from her name, she as the pronoun, to the mortal queen all the in the same paragraph where no perspective has change threw me off for a long time. It eventually eased as more dialogue came. Overall I really thoroughly enjoyed this book and I’m thrilled that I also received the savage queen to read. The poetic nature of the writing was so beautiful while also being easy to follow! I really enjoyed this book!

I love books surrounded around a Fae, arranged marriage with a human, but throw in a plot to where said human ends up having abilities – I am automatically hooked. The world building and the backstory of both main characters and their respective bloodlines is beautifully done. There is misunderstanding, fantasy, secrets, and attraction that are blended very well. I cannot wait for book two!

The Trees! 🫶🌲♥️ This is a total slllooowww burn, but Lir and Ash are just getting started I hope. I loved the fae characters, the forest connection and the fae city. It did take me a minute to get with this writing style, but worth it! Unique and creative fae world and lore, with lots of politics. Gives some Throne of Glass, Blood and Ash, the Black Witch and Avatar vibes. Looking forward to the next one!

The worldbuilding in this book is so rich, and the descriptions are stunningly beautiful. While there is a ton of action, the romance is a super slow burn.

Watching Aisling grow from lost naive young girl, to strong angry Queen was intense. There are times she gets annoying, especially in the beginning. I suppose I would probably feel the same if I was in her shoes too. I can't imagine I would be happy stuck in an arranged marriage with a stranger, and tossed head first into a completely unfamiliar realm where you don't know the language. Pretty much everyone has treated her like crap her whole life. The excessive inner monologue gets to be a bit much, but everything else makes up for it.

Unfortunately Lir remains a mystery for me. Since the story is only from Aisling's view, we don't get that deep inner connection I would have liked with him. He is mostly broody and quiet.

Overall, I thought this was a fantastic YA novel, and I can see teens enjoying it.

This would be a great book without the romance, but as a romance reader, the romance was *chef's kiss*. The world-building, the characters, the chemistry, and the writing were excellent! All excellent! If you're getting into the romantasy genre, this is a fantastic book to pick up! It's hard to write without giving away the plot, but seriously, read this book. You won't regret it!

Wow I am in love with this book!! I haven't been this into a story for a long time but this had everything I want and need in a 5 star plus read.

Political arranged marriage between a human and a fae is such a good trope and the author did an amazing job with it.

I adored the writing style, such a beautiful and descriptive way to tell a story. The world building was perfect in my opinion, the author gave us details in everything that it created such a rich world and magic system.

This book is definitely a slow burn which is not usually my favourite but it worked so well for Aisling and Lir. There was so much tension I was desperate to keep reading. Lir is 100% a new book boyfriend and this is definitely a new favours read for me.

Oh wow, this book takes on an adventure to the beautiful faelands and has an amazing enemies-to-lovers trope😍
First I found it hard to get in to the book, but after the first two or so chapters, this book really hooks you in. The plot was really intriguing and the I really couldn’t see all the twists and turns that this adventure takes, this was truly a thrilling read. Also this book was written so beautifully, almost like reading poetry with all the descriptions. The magic practically flowed from the pages.

An interesting start to a series. The world building is fascinating, very in-depth. lir and Aisling are both strong characters but their character have a very very slow burn relationship. I'm afraid it was a bit too slow for me. Hopefully it will get going a bit more in the next book now that the scene is already set
