This book has been on my shelf since it came out few years ago - I've been wanting to read for a while now. I remember the huge hype about the book, and so I'm pleased I have now read this for myself.
Santopolo has written very short chapters, and this is a great way to keep me reading. I kept wanting to know what happened next. I really enjoyed the fact this book spans across many years - you really feel like you know the characters by the end. I love the fact the book opened with such a significant event in time, something that we can all remember. Using a factual event in a fiction novel is such a great plot devise for adding some gravity to the world created.
However, one of the main reasons I didn't give the book the full 5* is the relationship between our main protagonists; Gabe and Lucy. I just didn't feel a spark - were they supposed to be in love, or was it just a good friendship? I just didn't get the 'romance' vibes.
The ending, was powerful but did come out of the blue a little bit. It all happened quite quickly, so I didn't feel too much empathy towards Lucy's choice.
Overall, I enjoyed reading, but I found the romance somewhat lacking.
Hopefully I can read the sequel and feel more emotive towards that.
Lucy and Gabe are destined to meet on a day that will change their lives forever.
Their choices and decisions will be forever entwined.
This is a beautiful book and quite emotional. It is wonderfully written and the author is a brilliant storyteller.
Whilst reading I thought that the author has drawn on some personal moments, the unfolding of the story is written with such sentiment and feeling I felt that Jill Santopolo must have lived this life at times.
It's a marvel .. I hope it's going to be a movie
