This was a quick, claustrophobic, and scary read! I cannot imagine going into old mine shafts where people had died and exploring something that hasn’t been seen by man in 60 some years. So creepy!
The dialogue was a bit odd, but the story line was good. I liked the Wendigo vibes and the old letters the group found written by Nick’s grandfather. This story reminded me of the video game “Until Dawn”. Jess, Nick, and Sofia were all likeable characters who you wanted to see make it. The ending was bitter sweet, I wasn’t expecting it at all.
If you’re looking for a quick, creepy, and claustrophobic read, this book is for you!
Nick's grandfather is celebrated as a hero for helping miners escape out of a collapsed mine. Nick, Jess, and Sofia decide to go into the mine many years later to document the mines and end up with an accurate account of Nick's grandfather's final moments. As they enter into the mines, strange things begin happening and they start finding even stranger journal entries written by Nick's grandfather.
This story reminded me a bit of As Above So Below and The Descent. This story was fast-paced and pretty action-packed. My only complaint is that I felt as though the book ended abruptly. It was also a little bit predictable, but still very enjoyable.
TW: cannibalism, confinement, death, injury detail
Below is a fast-paced horror/thriller by Kev Harrison that follows Nick Jones, Jess & Sofia as they try to uncover what happened to several miners who were trapped and never rescued decades after a 1957 mine collapse. The investigation holds special meaning for Nick since his grandfather and namesake, Nicholas Jones, was one of those trapped inside the mine after saving many of the other miners. After the blocked mine entrance is cleared and additional supports are added to shore up the tunnels, the trio enter and begin their search. They soon find the evidence they'd hoped for of the lost miners...and more.
I would give this story 4.5 stars if I could. My only minor complaints with the story are the apparent lack of concern about unexplained noises within the mine and with an event that causes the mine entrance to become blocked. The ending also felt a bit rushed, but overall this was a great story by a "new to me" author, and I'll be looking for more from him.
The author wastes no time getting to the action with this one. Within a few pages Nick, Jess, and Sofia are about enter an old collapsed mine where Nicks grandfather and other miners died in 1957. Nick, a mining engineer, Jess a social media adventure influencer, and Sofia a camera operator enter the mine to capture footage and hopefully create a successful documentary. Right upon entering the cave they hear odd sounds and get the feeling of something watching them. Along the way they find artifacts, and pages of journal entries from Nicks grandfather shedding light on the days they were trapped in the cave. As they descend deeper in the mine disturbing items are found along with a sinister creature. Faced paced adventure thriller with a supernatural creature.
A very interesting, engaging story. I loved the claustrophobic atmosphere and the tension. I truly enjoyed this novella.
what a whirlwind of emotions ! so gritty and exciting , I could not stop turning the page to see what would happen next.
