I always find books of this sort to be incredibly helpful to more fully enjoying a location that I'm visiting. They are full of interesting tidbits about the location including a touch of history, some basic information, and a great introduction. I always read this before I get there so I know something about what to expect. And I always stop at the visitor center at any park that offers one. This book also offers a section on Nearby Nature-Related Destinations such as boat tours, museums, nearby parks, and educational centers.
The section on animals that are common to the park is beautiful and informative. Some you'll be more likely to see than others. And some you should avoid touching and some you'll want to recognize so that you'll be sure to get them off of you (like Browntail moth caterpillars and ticks). There are photos of things you might find in a tidal pool - don't miss checking them out. They are fascinating places to explore.
And then, of course, there are photos and descriptions of the trees, bushes, wildflowers, grasses, mushrooms, etc. that you might find in the park. And the types of rocks and mineral.
In my personal opinion, you should always have a guide like this when you visit.
