Kathryn Croft's The Last One to See Him is a chilling psychological thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. The story follows a woman, recently divorced and seeking a bit of fun, who unknowingly becomes the last person to see a married man alive before he’s brutally murdered. What follows is a rollercoaster of suspense, as she grapples with her own dark past, the consequences of that fateful encounter, and the unsettling connection between the man’s death and his wife.

The protagonist is immediately sympathetic, her tension-filled narrative drawing readers into her confusion and fear. As she discovers the chilling truth about Jamie’s wife and her own entanglement in this deadly game, Croft skillfully builds an atmosphere of paranoia and dread. The subtle, slow reveal of secrets is masterful, with each new twist and clue leading to even more questions.

The psychological tension between the characters is palpable, especially as the protagonist realizes that Jamie's wife might have orchestrated their meeting for a reason—and now, she’s watching her every move. Croft expertly plays with the theme of trust, both in others and in oneself, as the protagonist questions her own sanity and motivations.

What sets The Last One to See Him apart is its layered suspense and its skillful blending of past trauma with present danger. The book builds to a crescendo, keeping the reader guessing until the final shocking revelations. Perfect for fans of domestic thrillers and psychological suspense, this is a fast-paced, thought-provoking read that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

Not only is The Last One To See Him my favourite of Croft 's books to date, it's also my first five star read from her!!

It's dark, fast and such an intense read. It had me hooked from the prologue alone. Such a crazy read!

Unreliable narrators, secrets, lies and twist upon twist to meddle with my mind and keep me second guessing myself. I still didn't get it right...

Engaging, enjoyable and highly recommendable.

This is a very jumbled story with so many connections between the characters it was rather dizzying.
I was on the fence about Kate. She harbored so many secrets and what was up with her and Rowan.
I didn’t trust Rowan at all and my Instincts were correct.
I thought Ellis was a tool and I was suspicious of him.
I also thought Harper was incapable of telling the truth.
It was a job to unsnarl all,the lies and deceptions in this book but in the end, truth prevailed.

The Last One to See Him is a psychological thriller with a huge cast of unreliable characters and a new twist on almost every page. Kate, dealing with her recent separation, decides to spend a night out with her girlfriends. While at the bar, she meets Jamie, who she decides is the perfect way to get over her ex. After a night at Jamie's apartment, Kate returns the next day to spend some more quality time with him, only to find Jamie murdered. Due to events in her past, Kate cannot be found next to another murdered body. After fleeing the scene, all Kate wants is for her life to go back to normal. She focuses on her son and being the perfect mother. In doing so, she sets up a playdate with her son's newest friend. However, upon arriving at their house, Kate discovers that the mother also happens to be Jamie's ex (or maybe not so ex) wife. Now, Kate is not only questioning Jamie's murder but also wondering who Jamie actually was.

There was simply way too much to this book. The plot was overly complicated with Kate's past, her night with Jamie, Jamie's past, Kate's relations with Harper, Harper and Jamie's relationship, and Kate's interactions with her therapist, and other smaller storylines. Everything was just too unbelievable. It honestly felt like the author was trying to fit two very complex thrillers (with individual storylines) into one book. Because of all the storylines and the randomness, the pacing was off. It was a struggle to make it through certain sections of the book. None of the characters are likable, which made it difficult to care what happened to them. The Last One to See Him was simply not a book for me.

What a read! Twisty, twisty, TWISTY!
Kate and Jamie meet on a night out and against Kate's better judgement, she goes back to his apartment for the night. The following day, Kate discovers Jamie has been murdered. Was she the last person to see him?

When Kate discovers Jamie was married and is then befriended by his wife, she is both terrified and intrigued - well, so was I! A brilliant plot, with writing that had me gripped and fascinating yet relatable characters. I devoured it!

5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Kathryn Croft and Bookouture, for an ARC in return for an honest review.

The Last One To See Him is another gripping psychological thriller from Kathryn Croft. As with her previous books this one has me captivated after a couple of chapters. There was plenty of twists and turns throughout the book which had me gasping out loud at times. There’s lots going on in the book but at no stage do you get bogged down by it all. The characters are all well developed and really help the story gather momentum. As I was reading this book I found myself anxious to get to the end to see how things would end up, but at the same time I didn’t want it to end as I was really enjoying this fast paced and page turning read.

Kate and Harper share a common thread: they both have young sons who are roughly the same age. However, they also share another connection: they both knew Jamie, who was Harper’s husband. Interestingly, Jamie was the man Kate had a one-night stand with. Recently separated from her husband, Ellis, Kate may have been seeking solace in a fling. Tragically, the day after their encounter, Kate discovers Jamie’s lifeless body.

In a panic, Kate flees the scene, determined to avoid suspicion in Jamie’s murder. Years of a secret she’s kept has left her feeling vulnerable, and she fears that revealing her truth could make her the prime suspect. This internal conflict is a constant struggle for Kate.

Then there is Harper. She is not going to take Jamie’s murder lying down. She does the best thing she imagines possible. She devises a plan to befriend Kate, hoping to gain her trust and cooperation. However, this is no ordinary friendship between two mothers. Harper insists that their sons become fast friends, despite Kate’s hesitancy.

If you’re a fan of intricate plots and suspenseful reads, then look no further than The Last to See Him. Just as you are working out one twist, another pops up…and then another. What a cunning story with protagonists that you might want to trust or that you absolute do not want to trust. Prepare to be captivated by this thrilling and impossible-to-put-down read.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest psychological thriller by Kathryn Croft. All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

Kate is trying to move on after a separation with her husband, when she has a one-night stand with a man she meets in the bar, Jamie. When she returns to see him the next day, she finds him murdered in his flat! But her past prevents her from going to the police. When she meets a new mom at school, Harper, they get invited to her home for a playdate, only for Kate to find Jamie’s wedding picture on the wall. Does Harper have ulterior motives?

Such a completely twisty book – you won’t believe or trust any of the characters or even like them much! But as always, Kathryn Croft’s writing and storytelling abilities will pull you in until you find yourself glued to the pages. Everything I thought I knew was wrong and I was so shocked at the ending. Great read!

The Last One to See Him by Kathryn Croft is a twisty page turner that keeps you guessing throughout.

Kate meets Jamie and is absolutely mesmerized. After going back to Jamie's apartment for a one night stand, Kate reluctantly leaves the next morning making a promise to return later in the day. When Kate returns to Jamie's apartment she finds him brutally murdered. Because of her storied past she decides to leave the crime scene without calling the police. Later on while at a playdate with her son at a woman named Harper's house, Kate sees something that shocks her to her core. A picture of Jamie, the man she had that fateful one night stand with, and Harper is his wife.

Wow! What a wild ride of a book! This book is filled with twist after twist and you really don't know who to believe. It has a dual POV, Kate and Harper, and you learn so much about both characters. This book was fast-paced and full of dark secrets and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a good twisted read!

Kate meets Jamie in a bar after separating from her husband and ends up back at his flat. Going back there the next day she finds that it appears he has been murdered. She decides to leave because of things that have happened in her past. Later she meets Jamie’s wife Harper and strange things start happening. Does someone think Kate knows more than she’s letting on?

This is my first book my Kathryn Croft and certainly won’t be my last. What a page turner! I think it’s best to go into this one not knowing too much as to not ruin the surprises or plot. The author does such a great job at making the reader have doubts on everyone. My mind was changing every chapter, I never knew who to trust! The characters were well developed and I enjoyed Kate as the main protagonist.

This was a fast paced read and I never found myself bored, I was engrossed throughout. There are plenty of twists and shock moments in which I enjoyed. The author does a great job at weaving a complex storyline and making it all come together in a satisfying conclusion. I will recommend this one and I can’t wait to discover more by this author! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.

The premise of The Last One to See Him seemed quite interesting. Unfortunately, something didn’t quite hit the mark for me. A cast of unreliable characters constantly lying to each other, an overly intricate storyline, and more twists and deceptive props than I could keep up with. To be honest, it took me longer to finish than usual, as it had a somewhat soporific effect in me. It’s not a bad book—I’ve read thrillers that were far more far-fetched—but somehow, there was just too much going on for my liking.
That said, I still wanted to see how it all tied up in the end. It just won’t be a memorable read for me.

Kate gets mesmerized by Jamie's blue eyes that she and Jamie have a one night stand together. Katie slowly leaves Jamie's apartment. However, the next day, Kate hears that Jamie was murdered and Kate was actually the last person to see him. Meanwhile. Harper, Jamie's wife knew that Kate was the last person to see Jamie alive and would do anything to prove that Kate murdered Jamie, which involved Kate's closed past coming into light.

This was a twisty and fast paced thriller. The whole story was unputdownable and a page turner. We see the POVs of both Kate and Harper and we both know one of them could be a murderer and a liar. However, the ending was completely unexpected that it was basically...shocking. I have read Kathryn Croft's thrillers before and this was an unputdownable thriller that will put you on the edge. There's an old saying about eye for an eye and this story truly tells the story about that. Did Kate really kill Jamie? Or was it Harper and she try to pin the murder on Kate? These questions are running in your mind as you read this twisted thriller.

This was a great psychological thriller and would highly recommend. Overall, this book is worth 4.5 stars.

Many thanks to Netgalle and Bookouture for the ARC. Review is based on my honest opinion only.

Kate has a one night stand that goes terribly wrong when she is the last one to see him alive. His wife believes Kate is the one who murdered him and wants to make her life miserable. This book is full of twist after twist and just when you think you have it figured out nope it twists again!

I loved the character development for Kate and Harper we learn so much about both their past and present lives to keep you engaged in what is happening to them. You feel for side characters and I gasped a few times at parts. This will not be the last book I read from this author. She does great thrillers.

If you love domestic thrillers with multiple twists that can keep you engaged and guessing this is the book for you.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. You know when a character decides to go it alone /do it their way and you as the reader know it's clearly the wrong decision, that's how I felt about the main character's line of thinking and course of action.; at times wanting to yell girl, in real life no one would do this type of stuff, ask for help! Just because you were the last person with a murder suspect doesn't mean you need to become a CSI investigator! One thing I enjoy about Kathryn's books is they always keep me guessing whodunit. Just when I think I've got a character's number, boom, wrong...and I like that!
