Not a bad story which picked up towards the end, i have to say that for the most part this was a bit far-fetched. I don't know of any three-year old that will stay quiet in a locked room for hours on end. Narration wasn't the best but also wasn't the worst. I did enjoy the locked room aspect of the story.

Her Hiding Place by Shannon Hollinger was the first audiobook of 2025 that I got as an early copy edition by @bookoutore and @Netgalley for an honest review. The book revolves around the main character, Charlotte who is running to hide her secrets from the world, including her 3 years old girl, Alice. Being one of its kind locked-room thrillers, starring a group of people terrified of a hurricane, coming their way, the book kept me honestly hooked to the seat and I was listening to it everywhere I could. The twists were almost unpredictable and I was so on the edge of my seat that I completed the book within 2 days of starting it and I am glad that I did. However, two things concerned me, one of which being the unrealistic (at least for me) idea of a 3 years old kid never making a noise or causing a fuss as well as the end of the book. However, this book is now yours to devour. I was intrigued by so many twists and a reliable narration of the book, however, the ending chapters of the book seemed a bit rushed in comparison to the earlier chapters which were too detailed and focused on all the possible bits. Giving it a solid 4, for the suspense and thriller vibe of the book, as for me it was one of its kind. Thankyou shannon, netgalley and bookouture for the early access copy of the audiobook.

Charlotte is on the run with Alice a young girl. She takes refuge in the Florida Keys when she takes a housekeeping job in a soon to open hotel. However, Alice has to be kept hidden and secret. There is also a huge hurricane barrelling it's way towards them. Has Charlotte put the pair of them in greater danger by taking the job.
This book had plenty of twist. There were also lots of characters for you to decide who is the 'bad guy'.
The story also has flashback in it. Trigger warner - Domestic Abuse.
The ending was definitely very creative and one i didn't predict. Definitely worth a read

"Her Hiding Place" by Shannon Hollinger is a fast-paced psychological thriller and locked-room mystery. The story follows Charlotte, who is on the run with three-year-old, Alice. Seeking refuge, she takes a housekeeping job at a resort in the Florida Keys, hoping this will be her chance to save Alice from an unknown threat. However, danger escalates as a hurricane barrels toward them, forcing Charlotte to confront both the storm and an even deadlier menace lurking nearby.

Charlotte has kept Alice hidden, unaware of the looming natural disaster. Before she and the resort staff can devise an escape plan, a new and unexpected danger emerges, putting their lives at risk. As the story unfolds, flashbacks gradually reveal Charlotte’s past, adding layers to the suspense. The challenge of keeping a small child hidden in plain sight heightens the tension, making for an intense and gripping read.

Hollinger expertly weaves twists and turns into the narrative, ensuring that just when you think you have it figured out, another surprise emerges. The pacing is relentless, keeping the audience engaged from start to finish. However, I did find it unrealistic that a three-year-old would stay silent while hidden for long periods and would suggest Alice's age should be closer to five or six. Additionally, while the narration was well-received, the male voice for Leo sounded too mature for the character.

Overall, Her Hiding Place is an edge-of-your-seat thriller with an atmospheric setting, high stakes, and unpredictable twists, making it a must-read for fans of psychological suspense.

I didn't know what to expect with this book, and it truly kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. I absolutely love a locked room mystery, and this one had me hooked. I did have some moments of frustration with the characters at various points, but I think that makes them more true to life, so I will just say it made the story realistic. Those who are into twisty mysteries will enjoy the ride this book takes you on!

This was a definite slow burn but worked in the end. I did struggle with the narration as it didnt feel dramatic enough which I think contributed to me feeling that it was such a slow burn. However I did like the plot and it ticked all the boxes in the end.

Her Hiding Place follows the story of Charlotte, who has run away to a remote resort to work as a cleaner, and is hiding her young daughter in her room. She clearly has plenty of secrets that she is running from, and when another maid is killed, Charlotte fears she has been discovered. 3 year old Alice is taken from her hiding place and Charlotte will have to face her past to try and get her back.

I whizzed through this audiobook, finding it fast paced and easy to get into. I immediately felt an allegiance with Charlotte and was backing her and Alice throughout, which made me all the more invested in the story.

This was a well written, quick read and I would recommend it.

My thanks to NetGalley and the Publishers for sending me this ARC in return for an honest review.

This is the first book I read by author Shannon Hollinger, and she really had me hooked on Her Hiding Place. I am reviewing the book based on the audio. Shannon gives twists and a surprising ending. I give it 4 stars because I suspected part of the ending but not the whole ending.

The story takes place on an island in the middle of a severe storm. Charlotte is running away from a horror death with 3-year-old Alice, who is not her daughter. Charlotte's primary goal is to keep Alice safe. Charlotte starts working as a housekeeper in the resort and hides Alice in the attic. However, Charlotte feels that someone is watching her. Her fear comes true when people begin to disappear and then show up dead. With the hurricane coming straight at them, she has no way out of the resort, and when she finally has a plan, Alice disappears.

I loved the suspense and plot twists in the story. At one point, I became upset with Charlotte because I felt she could do a better job looking after Alice. However, I recommend this book if you are looking for a psychological thriller with suspense and plot twists.

Trigger warning: there is physical abuse in the book when it tells the past.

This thriller had me hooked from the first word. The narrator gave emotion to all the characters/ Dripping the back history into the story gave it an edge feeling as it felt like there were two stories that were somehow connected. I wrongly guessed the true relationship of Alice to Charlotte but correctly felt the snugness and the evil of the hotel manager. I was blown away by the backstory and it made me think that this is something that must happen a lot but society never talks about it. The plot itself was action packed and fast paced full of red herrings and twists and turns. It made me care about Alice and Charlotte regardless of the truth of their situation. The only thing that had me feeling omg wth was the ending it felt very unrealistic and over the top hollywood hype that yes gave the reader a happy feeling but seems so unrealistic it took away some of the impact of the story for me. This was enjoyable from start to almost end, good solid narration, story and characters and felt a short listen, perfect for any thriller readers who are able to accept an ott ending. Thank you netgalllery, publisher, author and narrator for this 4 star read.

Thank you Netgalley, Bookouture Audio and Shannon Hollinger for the audio Arc of Her hiding place.
Narrated by Kelly Burke

This is a medium paced domestic thriller set in a resort on a secluded Island. It's seems perfect. Charlotte gets her work done and keeps her self to herself. Because, Charlotte has a few secrets that she's desperate to keep.

This is the first book Ive read of Shannon Hollinger and even though it's a slow burn, I was intrigued by both Charlotte and the little girl she is hiding in her room, Alice. Charlotte feels that she can't trust anyone with her secrets. The other elements that kept me engaged was the murder mystery/ lock down/ escape tropes. It added to to tension which made it a page turning read.

This one is an extremely slow burn, too slow though! It’s described as a gripping read but I didn’t have that experience. If anything I was urging it get going and give me something to get me interested. The narration didn’t really work for what should have been a tense and gripping story. It just didn’t grip me and I can’t say I really cared for the storyline. Don’t get me wrong I did really want certain aspects explained but it took far too long to get to the answers and I had lost all interest by then and the explanation was underwhelming.

2.5/5 🌟🌟/🌟

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for the opportunity to listen and review #HerHidingPlace

Charlotte arrives on an island looking for work. She is clearly running from someone. She gets a job that includes housing, which works for her. She smuggles Alice in with her. When a hurricane is set to strike the island, she needs to find a way to get her and Alice to safety, without her coworkers finding out.

This book really surprised me. There were so many twists and right when I thought I had it all figured out, I was proven wrong.

I loved Kelly Burke’s narration. She really hooked me into the story and I didn’t want to turn it off.

Thank you Bookouture and Bookouture Audio for my copies of this book.

Pretty good edge of your seat quick read.
It was somewhat predictable but a few twists did surprise me.
There were a few details that might have been better explained or gone into further.

But overall decent story, kept me on the edge of my seat at times and was a nice quick read.

Thank you NetGalley for the copy

Thank you to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for this opportunity. The narrator of this book was very pleasant to listen to. Unfortunately, I really did not enjoy the story. I found it rather lackluster and boring. I didn’t find the characters to have much depth and unfortunately, I cannot really get invested into Anything that was going on. This is reflected in the rating.

This was an okay read. I wouldn't call it "gripping" or "electrifying," but some positives were that it was interesting & slightly unique, especially in the setting. There were a couple of good twists, which didn't feel forced or completely unbelievable, the pacing was quick, and the scene setting was done really well.

The issues I had:
1. There's no way you could leave a 3 year old alone for several hours at a time & they never make enough noise to bring attention to themselves. Also, a child that age is not going to only open a door for a special knock or have the mental capacity to understand the situation, as it was written, and do these things properly. I wish she was aged higher. Even 5/6 would be way more believable than 3!

2. Without giving spoilers, I'll just say somethings didn't make sense to me & it felt like they were thrown in for the sake of making the twists better, but they didn't.

3. I HATED the narration. She over enunciated (at least that how it sounded to me) the "s" sound & it drove me insane! It's like I was listening to a high-pitched snake read the book. I specifically remember her reading the words "slow slurping sips" & it made me want to throw my phone across the room. Also, her voice for Leo sounded like a 65 year old man from Georgia. Overall, it made this really difficult to push through.

I listened to this on Audiobook and the narrator was good. The storyline is a desperate woman fleeing an abusive past with her small child. She ends up taking a housekeeping job that included room and board and had to hide her daughter from everyone. The child was locked in the room day and night with scraps for food. There is a hurricane barreling in on the island and people start dying. Her past kept inching through weaving through the story and the turns kept twisting. I did end up liking the book in the end but had a hard time getting into it in the beginning. And being from Florida and living through hurricanes some of the hurricane references were way off. At one point she can't escape because she can't swim.... well it is a huge hurricane, your ability to swim is a moot point.

Overall 4 star read!

Her hiding place is my first try with this author and I was not disappointed. The story is about a young woman who turns up to a remote island with a huge secret to keep to take on a housekeeper role for a new hotel. Will she be able to keep her secrets? Will she be discovered by her co-workers? Or will the people she's trying to evade finally catch up with her?

This was a fantastic listen, first of all I really enjoyed the narrator and felt she done the voices of majority of the characters really well. It was a little confusing at first having the novel set in America but having a British accent however I do prefer a British narrator myself. I would certainly listen to this narrator in future.

The story itself keeps you on your toes. One of the twists I worked out quite early on however, despite being a suspense the end had twist after twist, when you think it's over there's another one. It was very well written and although suspenseful, it wasn't too slow in that it felt like it dragged. I finished it fairly quickly as it was so well done. The constant twists had me blindsided and the final 20% of the book had me desperate to listen and finish it off.

Overall I really enjoyed the suspense and mystery of this story but what I will say is there should be a trigger warning to any readers or listeners as there is domestic violence of children/young adults as part of the narritive.
