This is a bit of a mixed bag. The narration is good, but felt a little and laboured at times. I wanted it to be delivered with a little more feeling. It was a bit better raising the speed slightly. As a story, it’s tense and twisty with just enough to keep me listening. Charlotte is interesting but also rather dull and reflective. I liked the idea of the impending hurricane which gave a sense of drama, threat and pressure. Overall it was enjoyable but not memorable.

I generally very much enjoyed this book. An interesting setting, with the added appeal of the drama of an approaching hurricane, some well-developed characters, and a few twists and surprises, both in the background story and the identities of the villains, all kept the book engaging. There was perhaps a bit much of the "if only they knew what I have done..." type of foreshadowing, and it became a little repetitive, but generally it was a well-developed plot told at a reasonable pace, and I found the ending to be quite satisfying. I listed to the audiobook and thought the narrator was excellent, though I did increase the speed a bit to keep it flowing at a more appealing pace. Many thanks for Bookouture and NetGalley for an audio e-ARC of this book.

I received an early edition of this book in exchange for my review. I listened to the audio version and the narration was easy to follow. The narrator did a nice job of keeping the story fluid and easy to understand.

This author was new to me, and I feel she did a nice job developing the story. The plot line provided just enough mystery to keep readers interested. Some of the story felt predictable, but there were still some plot twists I had not expected. A lighter read in a somewhat darker genre that I would recommend.

Her Hiding Place by Shannon Hollinger is an intense, standalone mystery that had me on the edge of my seat! Every time I thought I had things figured out a new twist would appear!!!

I thought Charlotte was fascinating! I really enjoyed how this book unfolded, with flashback scenes to provide more depth.

I loved the narration by Kelly Burke!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was an entertaining, quick read that kept me interested for the majority of the book. Although I found it fairly predictable, it was well written, well narrated and overall a good time.

The problem for me was that it was forgettable. I felt like when I was reading it, I was right into it. But when I put it aside, I forgot all about it. It didn't stay with me after I read it and even between reading sessions I would have to remind myself of what was going on when I last left off, despite it being only a couple of hours.

Not a bad book but not my favourite either.

I didn’t get a chance to listen to this audiobook before it was removed from my shelf. I look forward to reading it in the future!

Shannon Hollinger’s Her Hiding Place offers an intriguing premise with moments of suspense, but for me, the story leaned a bit too heavily on predictability. While the twists were well-placed, I often found myself anticipating the outcomes, which took away some of the tension that a thriller typically thrives on.

That said, the audiobook was still an enjoyable listen, thanks largely to the narrator’s stellar performance. Her smooth cadence and natural delivery made the experience easy on the ears, and she did a great job giving life to the characters without feeling overacted. If you’re looking for a light, entertaining thriller that doesn’t require too much guesswork, this one is worth a listen!

This is my first book from the author and was drawn in by the title. This is more of a slow burn but does grab your attention from the start. Overall a decent listen thought it might be a bit more twisty but interested to read more by the author in the future. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for this audio arc.

Her Hiding Place by Shannon Hollinger turned out to be a good read, while some place needs a bit editing (the parts where Charlotte repeatedly tells she needs to take Alice out of the resort!), overall book was good

Charlotte is hiding from someone, she has done something in the past and hiding something from everyone at her new job!
She has taken up a new job, with boarding and everything included - but she cannot reveal that she has one more person with her and she sneaks food up to her attic room! Her's was a very well developed character and the back story we learn about is also so satisfying, there were no holes in the story!

Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture Audio & Shannon Hollinger for approving the audiobook in exchange for honest review

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review. I really liked this fast paced thriller. The story line kept me intrigued and wanting to read late into the night. The Narrator did a great job too. Charlotte took a job as housekeeping at a resort on a deserted island only she is not there alone. She has her 3 yr old daughter with her that no one knows about and she has to keep hidden in her locked room while she goes to work. What could possibly go wrong? Well for starters, a massive tropical storm is about to hit the resort and there will be more than one person who will not make it off the island alive.....Enjoy!!!

I received an ARC of the audiobook and I did not want to stop listening!! This story had my attention from the very beginning and I needed to know what was going to happen next! This was super addictive! I swear every chapter made you more unsure than the last and left me not knowing who the hell Charlotte could trust!! As the reader sometimes it even felt like you couldn’t even trust Charlotte! This is my first book by this author and it definitely won’t be the last, because this was a great story! I also didn’t see the twists or the ending coming at all! I highly recommend this and if you have the option to listen to the audiobook, definitely do it, the narrator is absolutely amazing and made the story feel so suspenseful!

Shannon Hollinger's latest slow-burn domestic suspense, HER HIDING PLACE, follows Charlotte, an unreliable narrator escaping a nightmare; however, where she winds up may be just as dangerous or more.

About...

Charlotte is on the run (but readers are not sure from what situation) with three-year-old Alice and makes her way to the Florida Keys.

She needs money, a place to stay, and a job. She finds a job as a housekeeper at a resort in the Keys. However, she cannot tell them about Alice, so she makes her hide in her room all day (which is unrealistic for a three-year-old - but this is fiction).

Alice does not know whom to trust with a cast of secondary characters at the resort. On top of this, now there is a hurricane (you cannot be in Florida without one). So, how will she and Alice get off the island?

But there's more than just a hurricane to watch out for. Danger lurks in unexpected places, adding a thrilling element to the story.

My thoughts...

HER HIDING PLACE is a slow-burn suspense thriller that keeps you wanting to know more about the past, constantly guessing where the author is leading you. The revelation of what happened in the past adds to the intrigue.

Even though I enjoy Hollinger's writing and a good story, some may give up before they get to the plot twist (if you are listening to the audiobook, in particular). The novel truly shines towards the end when the past and present converge, unraveling all the mysteries with a jaw-dropping twist. This convergence brings a satisfying conclusion to the story.

I am sure the book would be better for reading than the audiobook. The intensity was missing due to the narrator. For this reason, I would recommend the book over the audio version. I think a different narrator would have delivered a different experience.

Audiobook...

I am a huge audiobook fan, but if the narrator is not good, it will dampen the performance and experience. (I did not have the digital reading copy). In summary, the narrator did not express fear or emotion and was flat, with no sense of urgency or suspense, which took away from the story.

Recs...

If you enjoy suspense, mysteries, and hurricanes set in the Keys, I would recommend Margot Hunt's The Guests, narrated by Amy McFadden, Sarah Naughton, Michael Crouch, Soneela Nankani, and A.J. Beckles. or Storm Warning by David Bell.

I have lived in Florida for 20 years and gone through many hurricanes, as well as in NC and Atlanta, GA. I have also lived and worked in the Florida Keyes on the water for two years (to open a private residence club resort and marina), and when you evacuate for a hurricane, there is no waiting as the Keys go first before the other parts of Florida and trust me you do not want to be sitting on those two lane roads with water coming across the road washing them or sitting for 20 hrs at a standstill to evacuate that puts you in more danger.

I once spent 22 hrs on the road for a 3 hr normal distance. You cannot make it out of Florida. Then the hurricane hit there, and the entire state ran out of gas, with the governor forcing us to stay put for a week in an expensive hotel with no power, food, or flooding. Then another 20+ hrs to get back with no power for another month.

But again, this is fiction (hurricane in the Keys and 3 yr old).

On the run, Charlotte is desperate for some cash. She finds a job at a resort in the Florida Keys that offers room and board. However, she needs to take 3-year-old Alice with her and nobody can know about her in order to keep her safe. Alice hides in an attic room while Charlotte works and grapples with weird and creepy coworkers, trying to keep Alice hidden and safe. When a body is discovered just as a major hurricane cuts the resort off from the rest of civilization, Charlotte must question how well she really knows the people she works with.

This book was so good, I listened to it twice. The suspense, plot twists, character development, and mystery are unmatched. I absolutely loved the setting and the stakes. It really had my heart pounding. The switch between past and present moments throughout really helped to add to the mystery and keep nuggets of information flowing at a good pace to create interest. The pacing overall was absolutely wonderful and kept my wandering ADHD brain focused the entire time. This is one I’m going to be thinking about for a long time.

Thank you Bookouture Audio for providing this audiobook for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

This was a real page-turner! The tension felt, constantly questioning who the true murderer was as the plot unfolded. It seems like the author really kept you on your toes with all the twists and turns. Every time you thought you had solved the mystery, another piece of the puzzle would drop in, forcing you to rethink everything. The central figure, the little girl, Alice, adding a sense of vulnerability and mystery that tied everything together. A story like that really hooks you in, making you want to find out what happens next, and leaving you wondering who you can trust.

A desperate woman on the run takes a job at a resort that offers meals and a room to the staff on top of pay, which is exactly what Charlotte needs, except for one small problem. She has her 3-year-old daughter Alice with her, and no one can know she exists. With an impending hurricane only days away from hitting the resort, how will she protect Alice and her secrets?

This is 2.5 stars rounded up to 3 for me. At first I was engaged in the story and thought I was really going to like this book; that is, until the story starts to draaaaaaaag on before even hitting the halfway mark. Somehow Charlotte is both over- and under-cautious at the same time. Her choices just don't make sense and are inconsistent. One minute she trusts someone, and the next minute she throws that out the window because of something the hunky guy said, which, by the way, what a weird dynamic the whole Leo situation was from the start. Also, I know this is fiction, okay? I get it, and I can suspend my disbelief at times for the impossible and absurd, but there is one thing I just can't ignore and that bothered me the entire book. Alice is 3 years old. I have never met a toddler who could be left in a room with no food and entertainment all day long quietly and then act fairly unbothered by that situation. Had Alice been aged up a little more to even 5/6 years old, it would have been more plausible and probably not become a point of annoyance for me.

Unfortunately, the narrator wasn't a good fit for this story either. She has a lovely voice to listen to and a great range for voicing multiple characters, but I felt her cadence was not quite right for a thriller. Some of the choices of voices for various characters also came off as over the top and didn't fit the character well, so it was hard to get immersed in the story, particularly Leo's voice, which was one that stood out to me as not fitting well.

Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture Audio, and Shannon Hollinger for the E-ARC audio.

Her Hiding Place
Shannon Hollinger

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Last summer, I read The Girl Who Lied by this author. It was the start of a series and I absolutely loved it!
Although this book is a standalone read, I was still really keen to read it and see whether I'd have the same reaction to this as the last.

I can confirm that this was another 5* amazing read which had me hooked from start to finish!

Right from the moment Charlotte arrives at the resort, I knew something wasn't quite right and I immediately felt for her - even before knowing the whole story.
As more of Charlotte's backstory is revealed I couldn't help rooting for her and for things to go her way.

In terms of storyline, this seemed to be quite a slow burn - there were no major revelations nor any murders to get excited about at the start - but at the same time, this was a really quick read and I was on edge as the tension built up gradually towards the final explosive conclusion.

There were so many twists and I kept coming up with theories - but every time I had suspicions, something would put me at ease and send me off in another direction.
The final reveals just kept coming though and I loved how this unravelled and how it finally concluded.

I was completely immersed and couldn't put this down - the writing style really draws you right in and holds you there until the end!

Another great read and I'll definitely be looking out for more books by this author in the near future.

Narrators: I liked the narrators for this audiobook, the only narrator that I wasn’t to fond of was Leo. I’m not sure if it was the accent or what but I didn’t care for his narration at all.

Storyline was OMG it captivated and had my attention on a chocke hold the entire time. Very engaging and kept me wanting more.

Well done to the author and I looked her up and have some of her other work in my TBR.

I think the story has promise. I choose to review this book as an audio book, and I had a hard time getting into. I plan on revisiting it later on as a paperback or kindle.
