You can run but you can't hide....

Or can you?
-------------------------------

A mom with a 3-year-old daughter is on the run.

In desperation, she accepts a job as a housekeeper in an island resort for temporary housing and $$$.

She planned to keep her daughter hidden alone in a room while working.

(Huh?)

This was the first of many eye-rolling moments in this book.

This mother/grandmother has never seen a 3-year-old child who could be left unsupervised in one room all day without making a peep.

The story unfolded from multiple timelines and was frequently disjointed.

Even with flaws, I enjoyed the tension and suspense of this atmospheric "locked-door" thriller.

I listened to the audiobook read by Kelly Burke.

The narration was good but not great.

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book and discovering a new author. Shannon’s upcoming release is a gripping and atmospheric thriller that keeps you hooked from beginning to end. The remote island setting and the mother’s unwavering determination to protect her child create a tense atmosphere. The unexpected twists and turns maintain the suspense throughout the book. While some moments may stretch the boundaries of believability, the compelling characters and fast-paced plot make this a standout read.

Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this quite as much as I anticipated I feel that the first half to 3/4 of the book is pretty much almost told in the book description however with that being said when we get to the point of the storm hitting the island it's safe to say it isn't only he weather that is the storm and there are a few twists and turns.

The narration was a little monotone, and I found myself being a little easily distracted with this one, which may be another reason I didn't quite gel with the plot as much as I had hoped. The characters just seemed to almost gel into one as there wasn't enough emphasis on change of pitch and tone for me.

I would still listen to more by this author as it wasn't that I didn't enjoy it I just felt the plot and story for first half in particular was already known and obvious so took away any wow factor moments!

With thanks and gratitude to Netgalley & Bookouture for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in return for my own open, honest review.

About this book- Protagonist Charlotte, is on the run with her little girl Alice. No one can know who they really are. While trying to keep hidden, they are running out of money, so Charlotte takes a job as a housekeeper on an isolated island resort, but she must keep Alice hidden. Alice is only 3 years old and has been exposed to things no child her age should be.
After a massive hurricane strikes the island, a body is found and Alice goes missing. Anyone could be the killer.
Charlotte’s nightmares become a reality as she tries desperately to find her little girl.
This story is action packed with twist after twist!
This story also uses “flashbacks” to tell us about Charlotte and Alice’s pasts and why they are on the run and who from.

What I thought - I’ll be honest, this story didn’t exactly grip me right away. But once it did…wow! Talk about edge of your seat and action packed! Along with twist after twist, this was quite the roller coaster ride of a book. I definitely recommend this book to anyone that a fan of locked room mysteries or psychological thrillers. I’ll will definitely be reading more by Shannon Hollinger. I rated this book 4 stars.

Narrator Kelly Burke did an amazing job!

This book is set to release: January 31, 2025

I really liked the book Her Hiding Place! The author provided quality descriptions of the characters and I was able to visualize the characters as the story was told. It was an easy listen with unanticipated turns that kept it enjoyable. And just when you think you have it figured out, you don't. I'll add that I really enjoyed the ending!

This is my first book time reading a book by this author and I definitely enjoyed her writing style. I'm already looking for my next read by her!

This story is told from two different perspectives/time periods. The author switches between a few years ago leading up to the current date and the current date. I liked the build up from that aspect.

I thought this story was ok. I didn't like how gullible Charlotte was. It explains a lot about how she landed herself in the position she found herself in. I also didn't like how quick she was to turn on her friend, but to total faith in a guy she just met. Leo was doing so much sketchy stuff and she just kept blindly following him. She even started to question him herself but quickly talked herself out of her intuitions about him.

I liked how everything unfolded in the end, but I saw most of it coming.

Man this was a pulse pounding book for sure. This does such a great job with keeping you guessing and making you keep turning pages to see the final outcome. A super quick read that does not disappoint:) I definitely didn’t see the ending coming at all. A few small things I think kept it from 5 stars. But would totally read more from this author! Thanks NetGalley for the arc!

Such a great audiobook. I was truly invested in this story. My heart went out to the main character. And for that sweet baby girl. Thank you for letting me read this arc. Going to look up this author to see what else they have to offer.

It’s beginning to look like a me issue, however this time I’m confident that the story was all a bit loose. It was a definite slow burn, too slow though. If you’re telling me I’m going to be gripped I expect to be at least taking notice. The narration also felt all wrong for what should have been a tense and gripping story. It just didn’t have any hold on me at all I’m afraid.

Don’t get me wrong, I really wanted to know why the child was in the room, why they were hiding, but it took far too long to get to the answers and I had all but lost interest by then

Somewhere between the story being dragged out and the narrators lulling soothing voice it just fell apart. From the multiple 4 and 5 stars here I’m going to make the assumption that the narration might’ve been all wrong?

I really do hate leaving a bad review, it feels mean spirited, and I try to appreciate that everyone has put a lot of work in, but honesty is key I think.

I do really appreciate to opportunity to review this ALC 🎧 I’m grateful to bookouture Audio and NetGalley for providing me with this copy.

5 STARS

Her Hiding Place was an absolute page-turner that kept me hooked from start to finish. The characters were incredibly well-developed, each with their own layers of complexity and secrets that added to the suspense. The shocking twists were brilliantly executed, catching me completely off guard and leaving me reeling in the best way possible. I loved how the story maintained a perfect balance between tension and intrigue, making it impossible to put down. Overall, it’s one of the best thrillers I’ve read this year, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone who loves a gripping, unpredictable ride.

As the approaching hurricane increases the claustrophobic feeling on being trapped on an an Iceland with a killer in the midst, Her hiding Place, challenges your assumptions and keeps your nerves tingling, from chapter to chapter, as you try to figure out the who, what when and why of this tale.

A thoroughly satisfying listen

This was a suspenseful audiobook, but it started out extremely slow. There wasn’t a whole lot of action. Based on the premise, you would think the storm would be more of a focus, but I was disappointed it did not play a big part in causing any of the stranded or eerie vibes.

The “who” wasn't a huge twist. I will say the why was!

The narrator was great, as usual. I listened at 1.75x.

All in all, I prefer a thriller that grabs you instantly, and this just didn’t do that for me.

I was hooked from the beginning until the very last sentence. I was so engrossed in this fast paced thriller that in finished the book in one sitting.

Charlotte is on the run with Alice (her 3 year old daughter). She secures a housekeeping job at a secluded resort in the Florida Keys. Charlotte must keep Alice hidden from her coworkers which proves even more challenging as a hurricane is heading straight for them.

This is my first book by Shannon Hollinger and I’m already checking out her other books. Kelly Burke did an excellent job with the narration.

What a ride. Absolutely loved this book. Just when I thought I had it figured out, BAM, another twist. The ending was icing on the cake. Loved it.

Her Hiding Place is an addictive, suspenseful, atmospheric roller coaster ride that had me in a chokehold from the beginning. There's an added layer with the hidden child and a constant feeling of danger. The story moves at a decent pace, edging more on the slow burn side for me but still managing to constantly keep me on the edge of my seat. It kept me guessing all the way through. While I had some things figured out, some truly shocked me.

I really enjoyed the author's writing style. I loved how she left little clues here and there. How she wove the story and created an intriguing storyline. Some things were a little overly descriptive for me, and I would've liked a little more dialogue instead, but overall this was definitely a fun ride.

This is the first book by this author that I’ve read or listened to. I made it a point to see if she has any other published books prior to this one, as I felt it was a good book for a first time writer, but mediocre for someone who’s published before. I was surprised to learn that not only has she previously published, but also works as a crime scene tech when not writing books.

The story follows one woman, hiding a secret, as she starts work as a housekeeper at a key west estate. From the start, you get breadcrumbs about her past that lead you to the answers she’s withholding. I felt her dialogue a little predictable and expected. To believe the storyline, you have to accept that this is just a book and not based on reality. Lots of important aspects we skipped over while small irrelevant details were over described. I also did not like the audio narrator- her tone, cadence, etc did not match what the character was saying.

Overall, not a bad book, just not my style. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this ALC.

Her Hiding Place by Shannon Hollinger
Narrated by Kelly Burke

Charlotte is in dire straights. She's running from someone, she's out of money, and she needs to avoid being seen. Seeing a help wanted for a job at nearby resort on an "almost" island Charlotte takes her chances getting a job there, hoping her precious secret can stay out of sight. Along with Charlotte is three year old Alice and somehow Charlotte will have to find a way to keep Alice quiet and hidden while Charlotte works long days.

Throughout the present day story are scenes from the past. Seeing those disturbing scenes from the perspective of a girl, she is continually being beaten, harmed in a variety of ways, and there is no way out. Is this what Charlotte is running from? It's obvious Charlotte is terrified of getting caught but it seems she also feels like she is a bad person, that's she's done something wrong. Just what it going on?

On top of Charlotte having to work while hiding a three year old from everyone on the island, there is a massive storm coming, turning the "almost" island into an island. This might be fine except a body is found, the person has obviously been murdered, and the killer has to still be on the island. Charlotte already didn't trust a lot of the folks stuck with her on the island but now she isn't sure she can trust anyone.

Kelly Burke narrates this story with the urgency and sense of danger that the story deserves. People can't be trusted, there is a murderer in their midst but is Charlotte trustworthy either? Who is the person being beaten, is that what Charlotte is running from? Nothing seems right from the beginning of the story and then things go downhill from there. There isn't a moment of peace from the time the book starts and that would be the case even without a massive storm heading right for the resort. If you need something to raise your blood pressure, this story will probably do it for you.

Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for this ARC.

2.5 rounded up. A woman has just taken a job as a hotel maid on a small island in Florida. She has a secret hiding in her room though, a girl named Alice that she is on the run with. The hotel job seemed like a safe place to hide out, but when a hurricane is headed straight toward the hotel and people are turning up dead, it seems this island is more a nightmare than a sanctuary.

This book was ok for me. The narration was good, writing was good, pace of book was good, but the thriller aspect of the story fell flat. I had the plot twists pretty much all figured out before they were revealed.
