I found this guide both fun and informative, spanning multiple perspectives, and particularly trying to understand the specifics of gay male relationships through what may be unique or prominent to their examples, including plenty of case studies that explore non-monogamy in various guises, which I thought was a real breath of fresh air. It did not treat these styles as anything 'other' or 'new', but rather focused on the core principles of relationships in a healthy and positive way.

I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

So many relationship/self-help books are focused on straight couples, so when I saw this, I was intrigued and wanted to see how it would differ. I did not need to read this/wasn’t looking for any advice or help, but decided to read this as I was curious what would be said.

While this book was definitely situated in a gay context, and did talk about some contexts like HIV prevalence and internalized homophobia, I think the content was similar to what would be in another relationship guide/book. Which makes sense. Yes, there are definitely some complex layers in queer relationships both externally and internally, but many relationship challenges are common regardless of who is in the relationship

While the author did discuss his identities, this book felt like it was for cis, white, able-bodied, middle class/wealthy gay men in their 20s-40s. Which is fine. But I think it would have been good to acknowledge the complexities that might be layered for BIPOC, disabled, trans, etc. gay men. While again, many challenges would be consistent/common, there are definitely additional contexts to consider. While this author did not necessarily need to discuss these as they aren’t his experience, including other perspectives or acknowledging the lack of them would have gone a long way. Some of the language used to talk about gay men was also kind of exclusionary towards trans people, so I think acknowledging who this book was really reflecting would have been important.

Overall, I think there’s were some good pieces of advice and reflection offered, and if someone was looking to work on challenges in their relationship within a gay context, this book would likely offer some support and guidance, and have some ideas.
