I really enjoyed Company of Liars and this is a similar tale of sinister mystery in a medieval setting. There is plenty of historical accuracy - and not necessarily the kind that we are used to seeing in tv and films - which reminds us how dangerous those times were but also a grim secret which wouldn't be out of place in a contemporary thriller.

Unfortunately, after years of trying, I still can't get past the first chapter. Sorry for not responding sooner.

Maitland is very adept at weaving all of these myths and objects and people together into a very believable mix. I had relatively high expectations and they were not just met, they were surpassed.
