I think that previous books by this author outshine this one, unfortunately. Although the story is solid and entertaining the characters are lacking, I did not connect to them and found that I really didn't care much about them or what happened to them. For me not being able to connect with characters is a big deal. Again, story is solid and it's a decent read, just not something I will revisit.

A Shadow Worth Waiting For: A Review of R.S. Moule's "The Assassin's Shadow"

R.S. Moule has crafted a truly captivating work of fantasy with "The Assassin's Shadow," a novel that plunges readers into a world teeming with adventure and pulse-pounding action. From the very first page, I was swept away by a narrative that felt both intricate and relentlessly paced. Moule masterfully weaves a tale where danger lurks around every corner, and the protagonist's journey is a constant barrage of thrilling encounters and daring escapades.

The author deserves high praise for creating such a compelling fantasy world. The lore feels rich and well-developed, providing a solid foundation for the high-stakes adventure that unfolds. Whether it was navigating treacherous landscapes, engaging in expertly choreographed fight sequences, or uncovering ancient secrets, "The Assassin's Shadow" consistently delivered on its promise of excitement. The action is visceral and impactful, keeping you on the edge of your seat, while the sense of adventure propels you forward, eager to discover what lies beyond the next horizon.

While "The Assassin's Shadow" was published some time ago, life and work unfortunately conspired to delay my completion of this fantastic title. However, I can unequivocally say that finally reaching the end was well worth the wait. The immersive world, the compelling characters, and the expertly crafted plot all culminated in a satisfying and memorable reading experience.

If you're a fan of fantasy novels that deliver on both thrilling adventure and high-octane action, then I wholeheartedly recommend picking up "The Assassin's Shadow" by R.S. Moule. It's a testament to the author's skill in the genre and a book that will undoubtedly leave you eager for more. Don't let life's interruptions deter you; this is one shadow you'll be glad you chased to the very end.

Rating: 4.5/5 - but can't do anything less than full marks for each star.

Assassins? Dragons? Fantasy? Yeah sign me up. The Assassin’s Shadow follows Locan as he hunts down his enemy who forced his hand to reveal his secret - he is the greatest assassin who ever lived.

This book was good, some scenes did drag a little, but overall the D&D vibe won me over. I did wish there was more to the quest, but the character development and humour does make up for it. I will definitely be continuing this series as the next book is released.

Thank you to NetGalley and SecondSky books for the eARC of this book. I leave this review honestly and freely.

First in a fantasy series.
A slightly feckless young royal sneaks off to follow his dream of finding a legendary assassin. In doing so (and finding him rather too easily) he becomes involved in a battle against evil that threatens the whole world.
Lots of familiar tropes but in fairness to the author there are slight twists. Our hero doesn’t become a skilled warrior overnight, his companions are suspicious of him and our assassin is not that great a guy. So not a tight band of warriors!
There is slightly confusing world building where you have to accept or assume lots, but once it gets going this is a fun read.

The first in a new epic fantasy adventure, The Assasssin's Shadow is the story of Lorcan A'Shadow, told from the POV of Cetrik, a would-be writer who has fled his home in search of his hero.

As Cetrik recounts past adventures both whilst searching for and with Lorcan, slow but steady worldbuilding, intriguing character depiction, and intensity ensue, with the introduction of vampires, elves, and blood magic.

The coming of age character arc of Cetrik is splendid, and the gory battle scenes quite something. Readers of Tad Williams and viewers of The Wheel of Time should find much to enjoy here.

The Assassin's Shadow is the newest novel by R.S Moule, I adored his debut trilogy The Erland Saga so I was incredibly excited to get my hands on this book. I wasn’t disappointed.

The Assassin’s Shadow is a wonderful introduction to a vibrant action packed world. Retired assassins, shadow magic, elves, werewolves, and much more.

“Fool as I was, I miss that boy. I miss the certainty of youth. I miss having dreams.”

Cetrik the narrator of the story is a young idealistic nobleman who runs away from home in search of a fabled assassin. Without giving anymore spoilers adventure then ensues. Cetrik reads almost like Druss was written from a young Sieben’s POV which I love.

If anyone finds some fantasy books a bit too slow paced The Assassins Shadow is definitely for you, full of action with the story constantly progressing. I’m very excited for the next instalment!

I looked forward to reading The Assassin's Shadow given my experience with the author's Erland Saga series. Unfortunately, it did not go as expected. The story and the characters didn't resonate with me. I stuck it out hoping it would get better, but it never did for me.

I always look forward to the start of a new fantasy series and I did enjoy reading this action packed story. even though at times it felt rather long-winded. The world building and descriptions of the places and landscapes were good. All the usual tropes were there and of course, there was a really nasty bad character to rail against.

The characters were interesting but I felt they could have been developed a bit more, I wanted to know more about their backgrounds and less about the politics of where they came from. Cetrik is young, naive and guileless, looking for adventure and Locan A'Shadow is the cynical older character who really doesn't want to be involved. I thought the characters were good and I did feel connected to them. I would have liked to have had more of Cetrik's brother in the book to build his character though.

Overall, it was a good read even if it was rather long-winded at times and I wanted to skip parts to get on with the action. I wouldn't read it again but I may well pick up book two once it is available.

I was so excited when I was invited to read The Assassin's Shadow, especially when it was for lovers of Joe Abercrombie and Jay Kristoff; and it did not disappoint, and I ams so glad it is the first in a series.

I loved the world-building, the characters, the descriptions of the settings and fantasy creatures which sent my mind into imagination overdrive, and there was so much action and adventure I flew through the pages. I also loved the sense of humour

Locan A'Shadow, who has a reputation as a deadly assassin, and posh Cetrik, join hands (after Cetrik runs away from his family), and embark on a quest to save the people and villages of Narlond from a vampyre enemy of Locan. The beginning is written from Cetrik's POV giving a sort of back story in a storytelling way and progresses showing how he has changed over time throughout the story since meeting Locan. I loved the dynamics between Locan and Cetrik which was really humorous at times. I also really loved some of the side characters (Elbows, Urlissa) which really added more depth to the story and gave it more character.

I definitely got Lord of the Rings vibes from this book and I am really looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

I couldn't get into this book it took me a while. The characters were likeable enough and the worldbuilding was brilliant but to me it just dragged a little.. it did get more exciting as it went through and it makes for a good first book for a new fantasy series following the classic fantasy book writing style and storyline.

ARC Review
I want to say thank you to secondskybooks for this HUGE honor of being on this book tour and having the experience of reading an ARC for them
This book written by R.S. Moule is full of brilliant world building that reminded me of Lord of the Rings and Game Of Thrones, painting a picture with words that immersed me into this universe.
The characters, while well-written I felt lacked a small bit of depth compared to the rest of the world but I did have moments of connection as we got to understand the reasonings behind some of their past experiences.
i definitely went out of my normal comfort zone with this read and it was an amazing experience to see how much I’ve grown and evolved as a reader.
Overall, I rate this book a 3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
this is a personal review, please know if you read and feel differently that is okay!
reading is not one size fits all.
thank you for the opportunity and the experience.

Would I reread this? You bet I would.
Would I recommend this to a friend? Absolutely.
Will I be reading the next one? Yes!

This book had me hooked from the start— specifically from this line in the first chapter, “I had just crossed the border into Narlond when I killed a man for the first time.”

Moule’s writing is absolutely magical. I love books with anything to do with epic adventures, vampires and assassins, and this one was 🤌🏻🤌🏻. I felt like this book gave Skyrim x Lord of the Rings vibes, and it perfectly captivated me (I am a HUGE Skyrim fan, and will eat anything even remotely similar up). This captured it perfectly. I felt like I had been teleported into the incredible world with luscious world building and fierce characters. The writing, the plot, the characters were all perfectly articulated and I devoured it.

I am eagerly looking forward to the next one. It really stood out as a well done epic fantasy. I hope this comes out as a special edition because I would love to have it on my shelf!!

This is Book 1 of the Legends of the Shadow Series.

With its amazing artwork cover and enticing blurb, this was a book I knew I had to read.

The story follows a young man named Cetrik as he tries to find the lengendry assassin, Locan.

Cetrik was an interesting character and one with an intriguing family history. He was one you could relate to, and I enjoyed seeing his character develop through the book.

Locan... well, he was an oddity! I did enjoy meeting him, though, and learning more about him. He really is a shadow at play.

The writing takes on an epic fantasy feel, with intricate world-building and weird and wonderful creatures, it has all the makings of a great fantasy.

It's a great book for fantasy or people who would like to try something new and different!

Thank you NetGalley and Second Sky for this eCopy to review

I recently read "The Assassin's Shadow" by R.S. Moule, and it was quite an engaging start to a new fantasy series.

The story centres around Locan A'Shadow, once the deadliest assassin in the Dominion, now living a quiet life at the edge of the world. However, his past catches up with him when bandits raid the farm he is working on, forcing him to reveal his formidable skills. The attack is orchestrated by Solis Deadhand, a vampire Locan thought he had killed years ago, who is now building an empire of blood and magic in the north.

Locan, accompanied by an idealistic young noble and a beautiful elf sorcerer, embarks on a perilous journey through haunted forests and snow-capped mountains to confront this ancient enemy. The novel is filled with action, political intrigue, and a rich tapestry of world-building that draws you in from the start.

"The Assassin's Shadow" is a promising beginning to the "Legends of the Shadow" series and a must-read for fans of epic fantasy.

This story starts with a man named Cetrik recounting the past, starting with him going on an adventure and leading him to interesting encounters and on the search for a legendary assassin.
There's found family and of course secrets and obstacles to overcome.

The writing style is enjoyable and the way the story is told reminded me of big classics like Brent Week's The Way of Shadows and also Patrick Rothfuss' Name of the Wind. It certainly has the mentor/apprentice and chronicler/living legend feel and dynamic.

I had a good time reading Cetrik's tale though I am not sure if I will continue his adventures as I enjoy the above mentioned classics more, I might read this book again before I make a decision.
Fans of classic fantasy will love this though!

This is a brand new fantasy series, and I just had to read it. I have read previous books by this author and know they write immersive tales. I just hoped that this new series would be as good.

The Assassin's Shadow is a thrilling and solid start to the Legends of the Shadow series. The world building snatched me away from real life, and I was sucked right into Locan's world. This is exactly what reading is for, in my opinion. To escape the stresses and strains of my everyday life. R.S. Moule has the ability to do exactly this.

The characters grabbed my attention, and their journey is packed full of tension, excitement, and moments of holding my breath! The character development is so clear, and the foundations are firmly in place for the next book to build upon.

I didn't want this book to end. In one breath, I was turning the pages so quick, and in the other, I prayed I didn't reach the conclusion too quickly. As always with R.S Moule, I  can't wait to see what is in store for the characters next. Thanks to Second Sky and NetGalley for my ebook to write my honest review.
