David Anderson gives a wonderful travel log. Despite all of the ups and downs, he shows us that looking at the world in different light can really change our prospective. I really enjoy reading of his travels. I received a copy through Netgalley. A review was not required.

This travelogue takes us from Cork Southern Ireland to Cape town on initially a couple riding their BMW motorbikes on this epic journey after their 1st major ride in central america and this shows the high and lows of the trip going through eastern europe balkans turkey and finally southwards through Africa. the trip and book itself is really split into 2 the first the couple together and the latter part after the break up a solo bike trip. overall found the book interesting.

Irish, and at the beginning, his wife, undertook to ride from Cork, Ireland to Cape Town, Africa. Not entirely without experience in long distance traveling overland on a motorcycle since both journeyed through South America. In the end, he traveled forty countries in eighteen months for a total of 39,047 miles.

It was virtually impossible to fix an itinerary with a ride of this magnitude and there was always a question of available fuel, but he had an extensive network of acquaintances and friends.

The loss of his wife was sudden and heralded a period of heavy introspection and downtime. It seemed the timbre of his (author's) voice changed subtly as well. I was definitely surprised at the turn of events and it turned on a philosophy gene that he continued to explore and engage the rest of the book.

The narrative exposes a raw personal side of the author as much as the people and countries in which he rode. He faced a lot of obstacles, many of which would have some giving up. It was by the completion of the trip, however, that he managed to come to terms with everything that happened along the way and to find his way forward.

A travelogue as well as a diary of a motorcycle odyssey, you don’t have to love riding to enjoy the experience of the book.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with the opportunity to read this book. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

The motorcycle trips and Cork to Cape Town tagline intrigued me.
Anderson has some interesting things to say about his profession, his travels, and his life.
I enjoyed the information about the places he/they travelled.
Had this been edited differently, and had the writer focused on other elements of his trips, I would have enjoyed the narrative more.

I wanted to like this book. I love narrative non-fiction, and my husband and I ride motorcycles together. I think I could have loved this book if it was given more time to be developed.

The writing was uneven. There were places where this book had some sentences that made it sound like the author was trying to say something really impactful. Those sentences stuck out really harshly among the very stark writing.

After reading almost half this book (I did not finish it), I don't feel like I know anything about the author, his wife, or any of the countries they saw. Each chapter is pretty long, but they are all written very factually. I wanted to know about the people the met, the food they ate, the things they were looking at. I wanted to know who these people are and why this adventure was 'Wife-Changing'. I don't feel like any of those details would have become apparent had I continued this book. There is no heart in these chapters. The most I have learned is that you need a lot of different insurance to drive around Europe.

I love the idea of this book; I did not love the execution.
