Sweet Obsession is based around a modern alternative of Olympus, where Poseidon and Icarus have their own versions of a retelling.
I’m ashamed to say that I’ve read absolutely none of the Dark Olympus series, but this arc drew me in, and I couldn’t stop the pull. Fortunately, it seems to work as a standalone as I didn’t feel like I needed to read the other books to fully understand the plot.
(Probably old news to those who have read the other books) I really enjoyed the modern twist of Olympus. I may have been a little lost with hierarchy of the Thirteen and how those who come into power reclaim the names (my own fault). But Poseidon throughout Sweet Obsession was a completely different representation of what I have seen before. If anything, it feels like a power shift between Poseidon and Icarus. Poseidon usually being the all-powerful leader, seems to be far more of a softer character throughout.
“He’s not mine. He never will be. Except for right now. For tonight.”
Icarus however, continues to fly to close to the sun in such a metaphorical way. Spending his life using seduction for the secrets of the elite, Icarus’ story looks like it's coming to an end after the death of his father, the retreat of his sister and landing in the path of Poseidon.
“All I have is my beauty. The moment time whisks that away, I’ll truly be as worthless as my father always said.”
Taken capture by Poseidon, Icarus finds himself regressing back into his seductive ways to ensure safety and potential freedom. As things progress, Icarus finds that Poseidon is worth more than simple tricks and his safety is likely determined either way.
“Surely he’s not actually an honorable man. That would be too good to be true...”
This was definitely an unexpected modern twist on Greek mythology. Two MMC’s desperate for freedom in different ways, finding comfort in one another. And in an extremely steamy manner. The power balance is definitely tipped in a more than unexpected way.
“I thought I didn’t care if I lived or died, but apparently the drive to live is too strong. I always was a coward.”
Not only would I recommend reading Sweet Obsession as a standalone for those like me who are yet to read the rest of the Dark Olympus series, but I feel that I was so hooked that I no longer have a choice but to throw myself into the world of Katee Robert.
“I may be a villain to Olympus, but I have no desire to be a villain to you.”
Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks for the arc in exchange for an honest review.

Another great Olympus book! I have enjoyed all of the books in this series but some have been real hits and this is one of them. I was not expecting to love this book as we haven't seen too much of Poseidon and Icarus until now but it was so well written. We are able to connect to both characters early into this story getting a sense of who they are and their motivations. The communication between them is great (in and out of bed) and I found that despite not having a real sense of them from the previous books I got really attached to them and their story.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that has enjoyed any of the previous books in this series (even if you have had a break). It is well written and advances the over arching plot at the same time as giving us a really interesting romance between two underestimated characters. I also have to say I loved the end I wasn't sure all the way up to the last chapters how it was all going to come to a close but it was really well done.
I read an arc of this book through netgalley

Right off the bat, this one had more plot than the other books and was perfectly balanced with the spice. I appreciated this as it allowed the plot to shine a little more than usual if that makes a lick of sense. Especially with the impending war. Icarus and Poseidon sold me on their love story, it was gradually built, emotional and sweet, I think the captive trope really helped contribute to that. I really loved the character dynamics. Overall pretty darn good!!

With this being book 8 of 10 in the Dark Olympus series, the overall series plot is really starting to build towards its conclusion. This review contains some spoilers for earlier books.
This book focuses on Poseidon, a legacy member of the Thirteen who has lives a more practical life than the others. And we have Icarus, newly alone in Olympus after the rest of his family either died or got out.
So this is a dark romance with BDSM, where the characters are enemies and one is a prisoner of the other. And yet the main words I think of to describe this are soft and sweet. There are so many beautiful moments between these two, as they find who they are separate from what Olympus has made them.
I thought this was a great addition to the series, with a great story in its own right but also doing the groundwork for the next book. I definitely loved the change of pace in the way that Poseidon handles the politics.
Also special mention for the way the book ended - truly fitting for both characters.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the free digital copy. All thoughts are my own.

Robert does such a good job at getting inside both characters' heads. How they act and why. She details the d/s relationship with great understanding, and I loved how well thought-out it was. As well as going against the assumptions of who would be the Dom based on physical characteristics.
This series as a whole is focused heavily on the politics of the world, which is an interesting backdrop to each of the relationships developing. However, this story isn't quite as hot and heavy, or humorous, or relationship focused, as Neon Gods and Electric Idol were (the only ones I've read so far), which I wasn't expecting. It was all lot more slow, serious, and emotional.
I don't really feel like we got a good resolution for them. I understand it's difficult to give a HEA/HFN when there's still so much up in the air in terms of the overarching war plot, and that their story needed to be told now, to explain certain things moving as they did. But overall I just don't feel satisfied with their story.
It was slow, it doesn't feel like much happened or changed, and their ending was lackluster.
That being said I will likely coming back to reread it because I liked their dynamic and bedroom scenes so much.

I loved reading about Poseidon and Icarus! The story was so well written and found the right balance of spice and plot. This series is a must read, especially if you love Greek mythology. I can’t wait to read Shattered Gods next!

Unlike the other books in this series, this was much more plot driven than just spice which I appreciated.
My heart really went out to Icarus for the majority of the story, and Poseidon was just cruel enough to be likeable in the darker romance world.
I would love the Zeus/Hera now... it has been simmering throughout the series and now we need it

My thoughts:
Sweet Obsession is the 8th book in Robert’s Dark Olympus Series. This book in particular is very plot heavy, there is a lot of movement in terms of the storyline and this often dominates over the romance.
The story follows Icarus and Poseidon as Icarus remains a captive under Poseidons care. The tension between the two is as thick as the passion. Their chemistry leaps off the page, providing not just heat but also some emotional depth. The plot twists and turns are satisfying, making it an easy book to fly through.

I have been so intrigued to get inside Icarus' head and also to learn more about Poseidon throughout this series and so this book has been up there as one of my most anticipated = especially as it is coming at the end of the series and the stakes are so high. They both broke my heart in different ways.
I tore through this book - as with all the Dark Olympus there is a sense that something big is coming and to see it start to come to fruition kept me hooked from the beginning. I remain fascinated by the Hera/Zeus dynamic and also by seeing the legacies come together which wasn't something I thought I needed until it happened. I cannot wait to see where this story goes in the next installment.

Thank you so much for this eARC.
This dynamic is everything I wanted.
I am obsessed with Icarus and Poseidon and was so here for the captive trope. They are so wonderful and I ate this up.
I’ll be honest, I NEED to know more about Zeus and Hera, I just know their book will be amazing!

Every time I come to a Katee Robert book, I realise that they set the bar for every book I ever read.
Another stunning triumph in the Dark Olympus series. I adored the main characters, Poseidon and his soft sweet side and Icarus becoming the man of his dreams.
But as always with a Katee book, it’s so much more than that. It’s intrigue and politics and just a wonderful web of characters that make a story that is truly incomparable.
I will never get tired of Katee’s work. Please never stop.
